All Things P.J. Fleck Rumor Mill Thread - Listed as Candidate for Other Jobs

Can bet that after what USC just did, LSU is going to do something stupid package wise to keep up, because that is what teams do. Can't just give a guy 7-8 mil a year now....gotta pack on the incentives, buy his houses, give him a jet, maybe a castle of some kind.....who knows what they will throw at their next coach. Might be too much for Kelly or whoever to turn down.
But you are living in Fckg Baton Rouge! Have you ever been there?

Everyone knows Norte Dame and it has a degree of awe associated with the school. Only hard core football fans have heard of LSU.

There is already quite a bit of buzz that Fickell accepted the OU job. I don't know if it's just rumor, but it'd be interesting.

I really think if Fickell goes to OU, Notre Dame hires Freeman.

PJ Fleck gotta decide: Does he want to reach and inspire a small Midwestern town and individual affluent households scattered across the US or an entire state -- from Minneapolis to Grand Marais and everything in between and on the edges -- that is ready to be elite...

He'll choose ND but I can't help but think he will end up regretting it.

It's not fair to compare anywhere to a place as luxurious as the middle of Indiana, but Baton Rouge is a pretty fun college town that is an hour from New Orleans.

Tons of Notre Dame fans aren't affluent. There are tons of working class Irish Catholic families across the country that like Notre Dame.

I'm not too worried about Notre Dame poking around this year.

I posted this on another thread, but it is illuminating, in my opinion.

Here's a direct comparison between Alvarez and Ferentz and Fleck, comparing each in their first five seasons. I think our guy stacks up pretty well, to date...

Barry Alvarez, first five seasons (conference record in parens):
1990 — 1-10 (0-8)
1991— 5-6 (2-6)
1992 — 5-6 (3-5)
1993 — 10-1-1 (6-1-1)
1994 — 8-3-1 (5-2-1)

Kirk Ferentz, first five seasons (conference record in parens):
1999 — 1-10 (0-8)
2000— 3-9 (3-5)
2001 — 7-5 (4-4)
2002 — 11-2 (8-0)
2003 — 10-3 (5-3)

P.J.Fleck, first five seasons (conference record in parens):
2017 — 5-7 (2-7)
2018— 7-6 (3-6)
2019 — 11-2 (7-2)
2020 — 3-4 (3-4)
2021 — 8-4 (6-3) (Bowl game pending)

Alvarez totals: 29-24 (16-22-1)

Ferentz totals: 32-29 (20-20)

Fleck totals: 34-23 (21-22)

-------------

Bottom line, Fleck has matched or even surpassed Alvarez and Ferentz in his first five years at the helm at Minnesota.
Alvarez got a conference title and a rose bowl title before year 5. Those count for something ! As i fan i would take those easy.

I like to compare the last four years where Fleck is nearly on par with Iowa and WI. Ferentz with an edge right now. Stability needs to continue.

Barry Alvarez, Kirk Ferentz.

Very comparable to P.J. Fleck in their first 5 seasons at the helm. P.J. might actually have a bit of an edge overall.

Neither Alvarez nor Ferentz ever left for another job.

He has to get the job to make a choice

Alvarez took over an awful team and in year 4 won the B1G and a rose bowl. That isn’t comparable to PJ and how on earth does PJ “have an edge” 🙄

The records are very comparable. And, Alvarez went 4-5-2 (3-4-1) in Year 6.
I will take that year 6 record if it came with a Rose Bowl and conference title in year 4 . That is how you have a state love you and belong nationally. That is just me. Then to do it two more times. Those accomplishments get you in the hall of fame.

Overall record in their first 5 seasons at the helm.

Yeah, you just keep hanging on to those memories. Back in the day...

Meanwhile, we'll be focusing on the here and now:

Do you think LSU gives Kelly 3-5 years playing second fiddle to Saban?

Who says he's going to be second fiddle?

Again, Orgeron just won a natty 2 years ago. Les Miles won a natty Saban's first year at Alabama, then gave Saban his only loss in the regular season in 2011, but lost the rematch to Saban in the championship game.

Kelly is a better coach than both. Saban isn't going to win it this year either.

You're probably right. Kelly has his reasons, obviously.

It may be worth noting, though, that both Miles and Orgeron have fallen a bit since then.

If they were coming off the Weis era, sure. Notre Dame aren’t desperate and they have much safer geographical fits they could go after. I’m sure they’ll have interest from NFL guys too
You can probably count on one hand the number of programs that wouldn’t take Urban Meyer. Notre Dame is not one of them.

This article lists Urban as more likely to be the next ND coach than Fickell or Campbell.

This article lists Urban as one of four candidates to replace Kelly (Fickell, Freeman, and Campbell are the others).

I don’t know if you are a Notre Dame fan, but if you are, I suggest you warm up to the possibility that Urban could be the next coach.

Everyone living from Fish Hatch to Atwood Ave knows why Barry stayed in Madison.

No offense to Gopher football, but there is no way that Fleck is near ND's radar. The only way ND gambles on this is with Freeman.

Could we hire our next coach from Kansas like 25 years ago if all this craziness continues?

Hey, Spaulding . . . Any new Fleckites down there in Oar-a-gon?!? How ‘bout De-F(oar)-est?!? How bout Ve-Row-na?!? Perhaps on Gammon Row-d?!?!

TD Jesus forgives...
However, “…First down Moses…” is old school and NEVER forgets! Urban, the dance king, is just too hot and too tarnished for the hallowed halls and proud memories of Knute and “getting one for the Gipper late in the game with backs against the walls for the Golden Dome Gang…” in old South Bend.
