MJ Anderson in the transfer portal

Odd timing.....considering we have one final regular season game.

As others have said, the timing is very strange. Makes me think there has to be something behind the scenes driving the decision but couldn't begin to speculate on what it might be.

Not a massive loss for this season but unfortunate because he looked like a pretty solid player who would have been a key member of the D-Line next year.

Would definitely be interesting to know what drove the decision to transfer with just one regular season game left.

You would have thought the "new normal" in terms of transferring out would have waited a week. I've always been a supporter of the players having more flexibility and being able to make money of their likeness but if he quit the Gophers on the Sunday before our final game against a rival with a potential Big 10 championship on the line then he lacks any loyalty, personal responsibility, or any kind of personal code.

Unless there is some personal issues that we don't know about, he lacks character.
I had been thinking there needs a counterbalance to the portal. People run from adversity. Reality would say stick it out because often things change. Those challenges oftentimes result in the greatest perosonal growth.

Perhaps, the portal should only be free during The school your attending break periods. Otherwise, it costs you year (or some other punitive measure).

I kind of feel like it is a big loss for (what's left of) this season. Either our 2nd or 3rd best DE, especially on passing downs.

I think the portal will end up costing players with how it is. I have no idea what's going on with MJ Anderson, but I am not sure he'll fall into a better scenario than he had here. I don't think it worked out for JD Spielman. I don't think transferring worked out for Phlip Nelson.

In some ways, it gives us some insight into some of the character issues before we would have known. It seems like JD Spielman doesn't love football and that's probably why he was butting heads with guys at Nebraska and probably why he didn't find success elsewhere. It feels like the players that move on (even if they have tons of talent).

I am not lumping those folks with people who are looking for PT and they are buried on a depth chart. I get wanting to play. For the folks who enter the transfer portal when it seems strange timing, they don't always seem to pan out.

This really doesn’t make sense. There has to be more to this story.
I'm inclined to agree. Hard not to imagine him being a major contributor next year. I'm waiting patiently to hear the whole shabang before I draw any conclusions.

Not sure the transfer portal means what we all think it means
Are you saying it often means someone basically just quit, got kicked off, or left the team, and now they are just calling it all "transfer portal"? (not implying any of this applies to MJ - have no idea what's going on there).

I think it worked fine for Spielman and Nelson, think about the guys that no one offers a scholarship to. I’m sure guys have entered thinking they’ll have lots of suitors, then when none come, they are out not only a chance to play football in a better situation, but also a chance to earn a degree for free.

That’s part of it. It’s just a way to organize and “advertise” the available players.

Really couldn’t stick it out for a week? Sounds like a great potential employee .

Does a coach even want anyone who not "all in" long term to be around short term?

To use your analogy, how many times in the work world does an employee put in 2 weeks notice (for whatever reason) only to have the boss just say, why don't you just pack up your cubicle today? Often.

Yeah, in the grand scheme of things, they'll both be fine. You can make an argument Nelson's career wouldn't have been as good here as it was at Eastern Carolina.

But Spielman? The dude had 13 catches in the two seasons after transferring out of Nebraska. His career low before that point was 49 catches. He had more yards in 1 game against Wisconsin in 2018 than he had both seasons. I get there were some injury issues but there is a definite change in his career after transferring.

As for the guys who transfer out and don't get scholarship, yeah I agree. I was focusing more on the guys who were clearly good enough (like MJ Anderson). But yes, there are plenty of guys who transfer out and never play FBS football again.

Reports are there is going to be another one within 2 days.
That’s a bummer man.

I wonder how that works with putting your name in the portal and leaving the team before the semester is over.
If you go home and don’t complete the class, I am guessing the semester was a waste school wise.

Odd not to wait until the semester is over.

I imagine they are finishing the semester of school. That'd be truly idiotic if not. Either that or maybe it was school related too.

The timing does make it feel like a hastily made decision but whatever the reason, I hope it works out for MJ in the end.
With another DL looking like he is leaving the program, I'm guessing something happened and it might not have been MJ's choice.

Disappointing to say the least. He seemed like a playmaker. I suppose this is the way of the future.

Has this been confirmed beyond whatever tf "gopherscoop .com" is?

Couple folks posting here like they pay for GI. If so, so be it, just want it from an actual source.
