All Things 2021 Minnesota Twins In-Season Thread

Correct. Play-in playoff games are incredibly stupid. There should only be 4 playoff teams. Get rid of the 5th.
I'm afraid it's going to go the other way. There will be 7-8 per league next year. Manfred only sees post-season $$ and doesn't care that it devalues the regular season.

If he wants more play-off games, make the Wild Card round 3 games and the Divisional 7 and leave well enough alone.

At the same time in his situation it isn't one specific injury that keeps affecting him. Part of it could just be bad luck.
Breaking your foot on a foul ball and breaking your hand on a HBP are certainly bad luck. He separated his shoulder in 2019 crashing into a wall stupidly, but he's been better about that the past two years.

The NBA and NHL, play 82 game seasons and all of their playoffs are best of 5 or best of 7. Mostly best of 7.

Here comes MLB with a one game playoff after playing 162. It's the joke of the century.

WIN the Division. Problem solved.

I don't like the idea of expanding the Wild Card or Division rounds at all. I want this thing wrapped by Thanksgiving for Pete's sake.

I would just cut travel days. One travel day per series only. You would only end up expanding the timeline by a couple days if you did that. Also, the WC could just be 3 games at the higher seeded team, like it was last year. Make home field mean something.

Absolutely. They play more games than anyone. We know the best teams. Stop diluting and cheapening the regular season.

Another reason for the players to fight the owners.

Huh? They are are making the 162 Regular Season more meaningful. WIN the Division and it's not a problem.

Wild Cards = 1st and 2nd Losers. Win or go home. Love it. The Dodgers LOST the NL West to the Giants. They Won nothing but the right to try to get in via the side door.

The last week of the Regular Season was fantastic, because the stakes were so high.

Wrong. More games gives you a bigger statistical sample. We know the best teams at the end of the season. We don't need a bigger playoff to help us figure that out.

In fact, it's a penalty to the best teams because it decreases their odds of winning the World Series.

The Best Team in the NL West, the Giants don't have to worry about the Best of 1. The Loser Dodgers do. Tough.

Those things happen to players all of the time, and many don't break bones. Buxton even cracked a tooth eating a steak...

Some people are just more brittle and injury prone, Buxton is one of those people. It's not going to get better with age.

It will get better, if he leaves. Then he'll be an all-star.

If he stays, more injuries.

That's how that works.

Let's face it - MLB wants more wild cards and play-in games because it offers more teams "hope" of making the playoffs.

In the old days of two leagues, where only the league champs went to the WS, if you fell too far behind, you had no hope and no reasons for fans to show up at the games.

then, it went to 4 teams in the playoffs with the AL and NL CS. more hope of making the playoffs.

now, we've added more divisions and divisional series. again, more teams in contention at the end of the year keeps hope alive. if you're 2 or 3 games out of the last wild-card spot, then every game matters down the stretch.

This will be part of the new CBA negotiations. MLB wants more playoff games to boost TV deals.

I'm not convinced has has "brittle bones." But certainly some people simply more injury prone and he's one of them.

I don't expect he will magically never get hurt and start playing 160 games/year. But I believe he can easily average 120 or so over a 5 year contract. And I'd take that 100% of the time.

Another moron.
I'm not arguing a longer series has a better chance of identifying the best team in a playoff round. The Dodgers had 162 games to win the Division.

They did not, and it certainly made games 150-162 far more interesting than if both would have advanced to a full series round. All they would have been doing is resting up their pitchers to align them for the playoffs.

Simple as that.

In 1995 last game of the season and the Dodgers and Rockies were tied in the NL West, and I had tickets to the season finale in LA vs the Padres. Since both (LA & Col) were assured of making the playoffs (1st year of Wild Card, not counting 1994 which had a work stoppage), the Dodgers treated it like a Spring Training game. Silly. Make as much of the 162 count as possible.

Except, if the AL let 7 teams in. all it would have done was put the Blue Jays and Mariners in the play-offs easily. It wouldn't have given anyone else "hope" in the final weeks and would have eliminated all the drama. Add more play-off games, but don't add more teams. At the very least, keep it to 6 max.

He's only played more than 92 games once in 7 seasons, and now he's going to average 120 games over the next 5?

That's extremely unlikely and not worth 100+ million even if he did.

24 year old that throws 100 and has a whip out slide but please keep the turtle and cave kn the roster.

this probably won’t hurt them but given the front offices track record with roster management it’s certainly questionable.

Same move with Zack Littel and that did not go in the twins favor.

That's a more than a tad disingenuous. He's played more than 92 games in 3 out of 6 possible seasons and would have in 2020 over a full season.

2015: 72 games in the minors. 46 with the Twins. 118 games total
2016: 92 games with the Twins. 49 in the minors. 141 games total.
2017: 140 games with the Twins
2018: 28 with the Twins. 36 in the minors. 64 games total
2019: 87 with the Twins
2020: 39/60 with the Twins = 105 out of 162.
2021: 61 games with the Twins.

This averages to 102 games/season. Can he stay at least 20% healthier? I'm willing to bet he can.

120 games of Buxton is absolutely worth $20 million/year. We're paying Donaldson $23 million/year and he's hurt a lot too, much older and not as good defensively.

There's so many easy to cut guys on the 40 man, I can't see why they allowed this.

You could also throw him a bone for playing 7 games with the St Paul Saints this year, albeit for injury rehab.

2019 he played 1 Game for Cedar Rapids, also on injury rehab. He hurt his shoulder in that one and missed several additional weeks. Murphy's Law...

Rehab games = MLB games missed due to injury, so I was trying to be fair to his point. Most/all the games in the minors in 2015, 16 and 18 were not injury rehab.

I missed the minor league games, so you got me there. And you can't project for last season, as he could have still gotten injured if the season was longer.

Even so, you're betting on something that has only happened twice in seven seasons, to happen the next 5 seasons in a row. Vegas must love you.

Donaldson has played in more than 120 games in 7 of the last 9 seasons, and if you include the minors, he has his hit at least that many games in a season most of his career. He's also a more proven hitter than Buxton, as this was Buxton's first good season at the plate of his career.

Every beat writer for the twins has raised questions about the Colina move. Too bad the front office doesn’t have to do any more interviews for a while otherwise they could get questioned about this move.

It doesn't have to happen 5 years in a row. I said if he averages 120 games it's a fair contract. That might be 3 healthy seasons of 140 + and 1-2 with injuries.
