***OFFICIAL OHIO STATE AT MINNESOTA SEASON OPENING IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

I thought the refs made some bad calls or no calls. OTOH they didn’t make the Gopher defense slower than shit. Let’s hope Mo’s injury isn’t too bad. The Gophers had how many sacks of a first time qb?

OSU gets the benefit of a lot of PI non-calls. They are the King. They did beat us on the merits, so I hate to moan over the non-calls—but it is aggravating.
I feel the same way. We gave up way too many big plays, which was more the reason why we lost.

Bryce Williams was in for only a few plays, but looked good, scoring a TD. He is a better running back than Wiley IMHO. I’d move Williams up … and start giving Ky Thomas some looks.

The Gophers didn't lose because of reffing, but holy crap did they screw the pooch late...

Hopefully, most of the guys are healthy and can go the rest of the way.

You are literally a nut job if you weren't impressed with Morgan overall tonight.
Agreed, thought Morgan was very solid.
Morgan was great.
Great...? At best, you might be able to say that Morgan was solid. It's easy to forget that int that was gifted back to MN by a dumbass Ohio State player. What about the dropped int's in that first half...?

If Mo is gone, it's all gonna fall squarely on Tanner Morgan's shoulders. Solid isn't gonna cut it... and I don't think he's got more in him than that. I'm just hoping that Bell, Wright, Jackson and the rest can make enough great catches to keep Tanner afloat. It'll be interesting.

They were all big plays really. Now with Ibrahim more than likely done and this loss tonight just leaves a crappy taste in my mouth

I feel better about that trio of WRs after seeing the game tonight. Use the games against Miami (OH) to get better and more comfortable (Minus CAB obviously)

My player of the game...
Tie between
Dylan Wright(kid is the real deal)
Matthew Trickett(all KOs to the end zone and a 46 yard FG)

I don't believe Trickett kicked off...

EDIT: Looks like the kickoffs were by #99 Dragan Kesich

I like those, but Mo was the most standout stud, even if hurt late.

Terrific effort tonight by the Gophers.
On offense, yes.

On defense hell no. The LB and DB Corp was so befuddled they looked like Pops Warner players out there. I was afraid they were not equal in speed, but the awful angles they took just made it worse. It wasn't just on the big five plays that helped OSU's QB get great looking stats for his first game either. Those were just the worst examples

We really didn’t take many chances with jail break blitzes … probably to not give up big plays. But against OSU, playing back on your heels on D pretty much guarantees them big plays anyway. So why not go out with guns blazing (blitzing). In the rare games when we beat OSU, we blitzed a lot (and we threw downfield a lot). In the second half, we let Stroud get comfortable. I love how the Gophers played, but it felt at some key times as if we were playing not to lose by much. Maybe we thought we could play OSU straight up …

CAN SAY ONE LAST TIME IN THIS THREAD? FUCKKKKKKK O$U. FUCKKKKKK B1G REFSSSS and OFFICE. FUCKKKKK THEM ALL!!!!
GREAT EFFORTS FROM THE TEAM. WITH MO. WE CAN WIN WEST!

Ohio State wins with vastly superior talent at all positions; you can’t really “coach” against it unless you are Alabama. But clearly the Big Ten referees are there for Ohio State as an insurance policy, just in case. Close games not good for CFP ratings.

With Mo likely done for the year, I'd really like to see Irving or Ky Thomas mix in with Potts a little more. I've seen enough of Cam Wiley over the past couple years and I really just don't think he's got it. The coaching staff really seems to like him though so I wouldn't be surprised if they ride him.
Agreed but Bryce needs more time- plays hard, good speed and easily the best blocker in the back field for protecting the QB

I agree with you. And my initial post was not a knock on Morgan - more a commentary about how he played 2 years ago where national media were placing in the top college QB conversations. We are 1+ seasons removed from that and I think he has more or less fallen off the radar. I think he will be a solid player this year - but, I was hoping for a real break out star for the Gophers - which we will need if we make a real run at a West title. I was a bit surprised at the near-INT on the screen pass. He should not be making that mistake at this stage of his career - this was not trying to force a big play, this was a mental mistake in not reading the DL, who clearly sniffed out the play and was dropping back prior to the ball being released. As someone else stated - we need the WRs to step up now.

When MO left, OSU was bringing more people up to the box.

That's what we will now see!

We didn't cover did we? Man, so many dumb ass mistakes. And of course losing Mo. Feels like typical MN sports. But I like our odds the rest of the season.
We just never, ever, fucking ever get anyfucking thing nice.

I will cheer against the Big Ten making the college football playoff this year and maybe the next few years because of their officiating. I seriously wonder if the Big Ten has ever called a targeting penalty against Ohio State?
It seems the B1G prestige rest with Ohio being in the hunt for the national championship. In order for that to happen they can't lose and they must at least cover the spread.

When Sori Marin has to play the whole game you know we're in trouble. He's pretty bad. I was hopeful Oliver would be a difference maker but honestly didn't hear his name called once all night. I know OSU can make guys look slow but that LB group looked bad bad tonight. That and the MO injury are certainly negatives but there were certainly some solid showings tonight.

Morgan was great. Coaching had their heads too far up their butt to make better use of him tonight. You'd think when Mo goes out, they'd pivot more to the pass, but no. They run plays like there are 200 minutes left in the game.
The series where we were inside their 30 down by 10 (31-21) got a penalty for too many players in the huddle so we had a first and 15 and we ran it 3 times in a row with Mo out of the game!!! What the He__ was that? We got the Field Goal, which was nice to see in the fact we might just have a kicker, but what happened to trying to get a first down? Horrible play calling!!!
