All Things Joshua Ola-Joseph Recruitment Thread (Class of 2022; Osseo HS; Gophers Offered)

So we want Johnson to match pitino? Seems disappointing.
No, but when using Pitino's history of it being done without including the context for when and how often it was done so that people could complain about Johnson not getting a top 100 out of state player within his first few months, it's worth pointing out the context to show how ridiculous that complaint is at this point.

Exactly….you get it

Agreed. But we can expect more of Johnson still. He was hired to be better. I don’t expect him to land a top 100 out of state recruit in year one but if he is going to wait to year 5 and not land top in state kids then what are we even doing here?

How are we defining top in state kids? Because it appears he has a good chance in year one to land three of the top 7-8 kids in the state this year. Including one that is probably going to end up ranked 2nd in the state.

Pitino always appeared to have mn top kids In the pipeline but it was alllllllllll b.s. let’s hope for better

Nobody said that he was going to, so not sure why this question is even being asked. Also, we’re probably about to land the #2 in state kid.

Perhaps Ben gets a kid that the services have ranked 125 that Ben has ranked 60th. Plus just because a player has not been ranked does not mean he is worse than someone who is and it does not mean he is better. So many things in a valued evaluation when also looking for fit.

How about we compare how many times Ben gets his teams ranked in the Top 25 at some point in a season? Richard was in the majority of them. How many Big Ten Coach of the Year Awards he wins. How many NIT titles. How many times we beat a Top 25 team.
Pitino recruited transfers as a strategy. Robbins, Carr, Johnson were three of our top guys just last year.
Yes, it’s Ben’s first time but Coffey, Oturo, Jordan Murphy, Nate Mason weren’t bad freshmen recruits.
Pitino needed to move on. But, No coach ever endured more distractions, injuries, players suspended, bad luck than he did.
Did he attract some of these problems? Absolutely! But not all.
Ben has 5 years to do better. He was hired to do so. He has started with maybe his two most fun to watch, best potential players out for the year. Dejavu?
Ben and Richard have two very different
strategies to building teams so far, it appears. Hoping Ben’s strategy works better.
I like the potential of the guys Ben’s staff targets.
Just don’t think we need to constantly bash Richard to elevate Ben. The bar to surpass him should be doable.

Well said.

Can we not use NIT titles as a benchmark for success?

I was simply trying to get any new information regarding MN kids rankings, nothing more. IN the past, talking recruit rankings, in state and nationally, happened all year long. Rankings changed as kids developed, etc. This is nothing new.

What is new is the sensitivity of some folks. For the past two decades, both pro and anti Pitino, Monson, Tubby factions debated rankings all the time.

With our new coach, it appears that is grounds for rankings being a discussion only held at certain times during the year. The protectionism and excuse making here are at an all time high.
Most of us have no other way to evaluate classes besides the rankings. Sadly right now the rankings are awful and behind due to covid. In the long run it’s fair to evaluate by rankings as many correlate to success. Although the sweet spot tends to be 10-25 as those guys stay 3-5 years where top ten classes are elevated by 1 and dones. I get your lack of patience being a fan as long as you’ve been, but we just are not at a place to truly evaluate yet. The time will come soon

Gosh, I hope so. But, you gotta start somewhere. Gotta be over 500 to get an invite. That would be quite an achievement presently. Then if you accomplish that, win the whole thing. That is hard in any tournament at any level.
We have a low bar to success but we gotta climb to get to the starting line right now. The term Year Zero was made for the present situation.

I’d be okay with one this year, but winning multiple NIT titles wouldn’t be a good thing.

The other thing to remember with the rankings is they combine all positions. The number 100 ranked player who is a PG and the number 200 ranked player who is a PG might only have 10-15 other PG's ranked in between them. Is there really THAT much of a drop off? There likely is some but that is where coaching, hard work, etc. come into play. There also are different playing styles between those players. The coaches are looking for certain types of players with certain types of styles.

Please keep this thread on topic. BB did receive a temporary ban because so many recruiting threads turned into the same argument with different posters but the one constant was BB. We were having to delete numerous pages in nearly every recruiting thread over the last few weeks and in each case it involved BB. We shouldn’t have to constantly do that.

Bravo! Maybe think about temporary bans for those who just can't help but engage with him too. That would clean things up pretty fast!

So…..Marcus tweeted his visit is august 25th…..247 still lists it as that as well…..

does anyone know for sure now if it’s August 25th or September 24 now?

Week from now is an unofficial, with Sept an official? I thought someone said they moved the official back so his mother could join?
