Sam Maresh to a JC

Oh really? Better? Better perception? Guess I missed all those CFB publications picking us as pre-season conference favorites. 0-6 vs. IA & WI is better? No points scored vs. IA in nearly 3 years is better? 2 Big 10 wins per year is better? The 111th ranked offense is better? 0-2 in bowl games is better? All the off field issues are better? "9 and 10 wins will be the norm?" Who is drunk?

It comes down to this and only this. Would you rather have an arrogant jerk of a coach that pisses on the high school coaches in the area and gets lots of third level Ohio recruits but coaches us to average seasons. OR a way to chipper coach who the local coaches love, he himself loves to recruit, but we may have really bad seasons.

I'll take the second option, because at least with that scenario we have a chance at seasons that won't be just average.

Is Minnesota recruiting better than the teams they are trying to leapfrog in the Big Ten hierarchy, no. Does Minnesota have superior or equal coaching to the teams they are trying to leapfrog, no. If you are not gaining ground or even losing ground in any or both of these areas then I find it hard to say that progress is being made.

How can you say no? we are recruiting 4th best in the Big Ten and our record will be there soon.

bankonit,

you're such a sarcastic poster...;)

How do you keep a straight face when you post?:D

BTW, how would you define 'soon?'

I think that Brewster promised Maresh the flag before the heart stuff even came up. I could be wrong, though. ....

Looking through media coverage of the event would lead me to say it was in response to the kid's hardships and not a promise made in his recruitment. FWIW

I don't think anybody has suggested rehiring Mason anytime soon, so can we stop making these statements already? "Better than the last guy" is no more to hang your hat on than "at least we are bowling" was under the previous regime. Cripes.

...1. Going from 111th in the nation to 110th would be considered an improvement, going as you say from 111th to 55th would be considered a hell (more than significant) of an improvement. Me personally, I was thinking moving up 30 spots would be considered a significant improvement. It appears you believe the Gophers must make the Rose Bowl to have significant improvement.

...

Note: You will seem alot less silly if instead of name calling you spend more time making a decent point. You feel me?:cool02:

You will do well to stay away from semantics in regards to a statistical comparisions of our team under Brewster.

Feeling particularly self deflating I looked into this (per ESPN as the NCAA's site was being uncooperative) and I think we all knew that our offense has been trending downward in production, but yikes, I hadn't really know it was this bad. Working backward for effect:
2009 in Yards/Game we were 109th in the nation and in Points/Game we were 100th
2008 91st in Yds/G and 83rd in Pts/G
2007 52nd in Yds/G and 68th in Pts/G
2006 37th in Yds/G and 30th in Pts/G
2005 9th in Yds/G and 10th in Pts/G

Pretty much falling like a stone down the well...

Now do I advocate firing our coach this year?... no. It is an unsustainable trend to fire a coach every three incoming classes and if we do, we had better look long and hard at replacing our AD as well. And personally I don't see anybody out there that screams both "getable" and "instant upgrade". But the cries for his head will be audible this year, as I see little chance of an up turn given the harshest schedule of my lifetime, and the first game being nothing of a warm up (10 win team, whose offense looked dominate in its bowl game and is returning every element from waterboy to back up punter? yikes). Will I be suprised if this is the final hurray for Brew? Not as much if you had told me that we'd be here two years ago. Will I be happy if he is replaced... probably not given it assuredly will be another no-name and we will be back to square one. And don't anybody start on goddam Tony Dungy!

So 4th in the Big 10 "normally wins 9 or 10 games per year?" Actually, according to Rivals, the class of 2010 was ranked 5th in the conference and 51st in the country and that was BEFORE dropping 2 three star recruits last week. Classes like that do not "normally win 9 to 10 games per year" unless you have a coaching staff who can evaluate and develope talent big time. Like the stats above on the offense, the recruiting has declined each year on a straight line in the wrong direction with 2011 looking to continue that trend.

I'm not 100% positive, but I can say with a fair degree of certainty that I read about Maresh being the "flagbearer" well before any of his health problems, and probably before he had even signed on LOI day. Regardless, anyone who puts any meaningful amount of culpability for Maresh's idiocy on Brewster is even dumber than Maresh himself.

I'm not "your man," Huggy Bear. Don't you think we should wait until the program gets back to where it was before Twinkle Toes took it over before we try to measure "improvement?" Anyone can take over any entity and spend four years running it into the ground before pounding their chest over a 25% "improvement" from ground zero. The baseline was set in 1/2007 and until it is eclipsed, there has been zero improvement.

Speaking of Reality Check, let's do a fact check on your post. On 1/1/2007, we had just finished a regular season of 6-6 (3-5 Big Ten) with a 3-point loss in the Insight Bowl. Last season we had a regular season record of 6-6 (3-5 Big Ten) and had a 1-point loss in the Insight Bowl.

Improvement? No. "Running it into the ground?" Um, no.

(caveat being the whole 'Pasadena Sooner rather than later' thing we brought him in for though :p)

Oh gee, let's pick just two stars in the entire galaxy to compare! How about 1/1/2007 to 1/1/2008?

You are seriously pathetic. Please do us all a favor and impale yourself on the nearest sharp object. Thanks a bunch!

More name calling. The term "my man" predates the fictional Huggy Bear character from Starsky and Hutch. It's no different than the terms buddy or pal. It's a term of endearment, I'm sorry if you where offended.

In the end last seasons team finished where folks who understand football predicted they would. About the same record as the year before with a much more difficult schedule. Factor in the best player on the team getting injured (Decker), I consider that improvement.

You have plenty of complaints, how about some answers? Do you consider last season a failure? If so why, and how do you fix it? You're the new AD what would you do to "fix" the football program?

You're making the assumption that RC actually WANTS the Gophers to do better. Or that he'd like people to happily follow or care about the team.

To very bad assumptions.
