All Things Tre Holloman Recruitment Thread (Class of 2022)

BarnBurner and Spaulding have to be part of some secret anti-Gopher movement. They both just derail every thread with negativity and ridiculous troll comments. Their dedication is pretty impressive. It’s one thing to state your point and opinion but another to drag everyone else down with you. Just toxic. Needless to say, I have gone with the ignore button for each. Hopefully my experience improves or I may just delete this account and stick with GI.
Why aren't they banned?

4hrs driving time. That's not enough to matter in a statistically significant way.

No Chicago (or Detroit for that matter) kid with matching offers is going to turn down the Gophers for Wisc simply because it was another 4hr drive, as the sole reason.

Another 10hr drive - then yes, it will start to factor in.

I'm simply saying, the number of 3* and higher recruits they have access to within a __ (6,7, whatever) hour drive is probably like 10x what we have in that same distance.

We have TC - which has it's tough bias against us, simply from staying home - and we have Milwaukee/Chicago, maybe STL if you stretch out to 8hrs.
recruiting is open all over the world. Check out how wide others went in building sustainable success.

Not at all what I was saying.

Appreciate what you're saying and I don't think you're wrong either, at all.

I'm sure we're on the same page that Ben should be casting however wide a net as needs to be cast to get the right type of players for what he wants, here to the U. (y)
Exactly. Literally do not care where people are from, what color they are. I care how they conduct themselves, how they help others, how hard they work, how honest they are, how much they put forth to push forward a success as best as it can be. I think this staff will do all they can to build it with character and that gives them a chance to finally do it right. It is a damn tough job but not tougher than where i have seen it done elsewhere.

Generally, I agree with this. Most of my favorite Gophers are not from MN. I will say this though, I think there is an advantage to winning with local recruits only in that it might help land future high ranking local recruits. I don't think the Gophers had any shot at Chet Holmgren. That said, in an alternate timeline where Tyus Jones, Tre Jones, Royce White (non-crazy), JP Macura, McKinley Wright, Jalen Suggs, Dawson Garcia, etc. were around the AAU circuit as Gopher alums, interacting with a 14 year old Chet Holmgren, I think we would have had a chance. I look at Badger football, and it's cool in WI to play for the Badgers and I think there is a huge advantage in that.

If the main campus of the U had been established down in Rochester, next to and always in great research partnership with Mayo ....... what could have been. We'll never know.
As the story goes the cities of St. Anthony (Minneapolis), Pigs Eye (St. Paul), and Stillwater were vying for the State Capital, the State University, and the State Prison. This was in 1849 before MN was a state and before there was a legislature - Congress appointed governor of the territory who had broad decision making authority.

The governor and the mayors of these 3 largest Minnesota cities could not come to an agreement and so they chose to draw straws to see who would get first pick. Stillwater won and picked the prison, Pigs Eye came in second picking the capital and the university fell to St. Anthony.

Not sure the story is true or how this is even relevant to basketball. Maybe that the only spot for a sleepy college town was going to be Stillwater - but they chose poorly.

...still an interesting story.

The right coach hired previously would have built something to attract more really good players. Attracting top line local talent is difficult for any program because they have more elite offers. If we had a National elite brand there is no doubt a better chance at Chet etc..

Yeah, it's about winning.

The truth is that our ONLY chance at a player like Chet is if he is from MN.

And we do not need him to win conference titles and get to final 4's. He is one and done. We do not have to have players rated 5 stars by the services. We need 3's that play like 4's and 4's that play like 5's an play top level team defense.

Sure, I never said it is the only way. However, landing elite 5 star 1 and done, 2 and done type talent certainly helps. And our best chance of landing those folks is if they are local.

No question. Just unlikely anyway as by math alone there are 25. 7-8 like flame out or go G LEAGUE. That leaves 17, Duke and Kentucky take 3-4 each. Kansas,UNC, UCLA, TEXAS, Michigan etc, gobble the rest . We will have a great 5 star every so often that just wants to stay home. We have not won a thing with them. They will stay one year. Most of them are smart and picking national brands, elite national brands. Whenever a young person asks for advice, athlete or not i always ask if they ever wanted to experience places far away and if they ever had. Last year i was fishing in Alaska and ran into this nice family from Illinois. The two kids were 15 and 16 years old and we were talking colleges. One had scholarship offers from Illinois,Purdue,OSU and Stanford. I suggested with great enthusiasm that the answer is always Stanford ! The other one was UCLA all the way. One was an athlete but either way, what terrific choices.

It is.

I doubt William Worrall Mayo ever envisioned one of the world's best (if not the best) research hospitals when he started his clinic, in Rochester, MN of all places. But nonetheless, if the U and Mayo would have been tightly integrated and based in Rochester the whole time, it would probably be up much further in the (medical) research rankings.

And what does any of this have to do with basketball? Probably not a huge amount.

I do think the very urban campus may turn off a few recruits, as opposed to settings like Iowa City, Ames, Lincoln, and Madison. But maybe it gives us a boost with a few others. Don't know for sure.

Excellent post. I do think it it a positive for some and a negative for others. Right now, more of a negative. No real problem to me. Find the best guys you can that match the values you have for people and your program.

Correct, Rochester would be gophers first.

Minneapolis they're second fiddle.

And, non sports, I wanted to go college town with a beautiful campus so I picked Duluth (half that statement is joke).

Well Duluth as a city is beautiful. It plays a factor. We have family members that picked UCSB because it is both a great school and incredible area. I know inner city kids who disliked UVA for being too remote. Many parents love the college towns for their kids. Again, so many factors.

I don't know how you do it, but I would love to see the U become more of a college town. Maybe winning more football games (basketball down the road hopefully) and creating buzz can help that? The location right in the city will always be a problem and it's a little bit of a bummer. Some kids may want that I guess, I've always just personally liked the college towns.

Ranks up there with the John Wooden story on things that might have altered MN basketball big time. But also might be completely made up.

I do know that a few people, back in the mid 1850's tried to get the campus to move to what is now Excelsior, but that never worked out, obviously.

The urban part is fine. For those of us who've been away from MN for a long time and come back for visits, what's noticable is how little change/development has occurred in and around Dinkytown. It would be cool to see some major commercial dollars flow into the area, and would enhance the experience of potential recruits visiting campus. Can still maintain the older buildings that are aesthetically decent, but add retail and restaurants kids and parents want to spend time in. Urban part is cool, need to enhance the on/near campus experience.

I'm from stillwater.. we were taught we choose the prison as the financial impact is greater

I am disappointed he didn’t choose the Gophers. It stings that it will be MSU and we will face him 1 to 2 times a year at least. I would have loved to have a floor general like him that can play defense. But who knows, maybe he will boomerang back. I can’t help but try to make myself feel better by thinking he will struggle shooting and maybe the guy we do get will be better than we think.

What's frustrating to me is there aren't enough kids who have pride in their home state. They feel as if they can leave and still be the hometown kid done good. They feel going to Gonzaga or MSU they can still say how they represented minnesota. Screw Suggs and Bueckers and Holloman. I'm sick and tired of reading that this its reasonable and ok he went here because of this and that. Unfortunately the Oturus of the world are few and far between these days. Too many Hurts dreaming of his glory at Duke just to go undrafted and forgotten in ten years. Hate these kids think they are ripping minnesota from a different state. That's stupid.
Too many Hurts? He's literally the only one that went to a blue blood from MN in recent years and didn't pan out. Tyus is in the NBA. Gary Trent is in the NBA. Tre Jones is in the NBA. Zeke Nnaji is in the NBA. Suggs is in the NBA. Even kids that didn't go to blue bloods are in the NBA or right on the cusp. McKinley, Sims, Tyrell Terry.

This stupid with us or against mentality can only hold the skill level in this state back. Tyus dumps a lot of money into youth development in this state, do you want him to not do that since you don't view him as a true Minnesotan anymore? Or take somebody like Khalid El-Amin , dude has been developing talent and recognition of the basketball scene here for years now even though he went to UConn.

These players will inspire future Minnesotans to be better players and some of them might even become Gophers. Alienating the best players this state has produced just because they don't go to the U is very short sighted. And I would love for all of them to play for the Gophers, but thats just not how it is.
