All Things Tre Holloman Recruitment Thread (Class of 2022)

Hold on. Are you saying Johnson had no relationship with tre prior to becoming hc????
Nope. But what I am saying is that the relationship dynamic before becoming HC is different. Telling that you don’t understand this.
I want Johnson to be wildly successful.
I doubt this is true.
Wished. Isn’t surprising. Understandable.
WOW. These are the terms of excuses. Well done.
You living in some fantasy world where each HS kid should make their college choice based on YOUR wishes isn’t an excuse to bash the staff. But you do you.

What's frustrating to me is there aren't enough kids who have pride in their home state. They feel as if they can leave and still be the hometown kid done good. They feel going to Gonzaga or MSU they can still say how they represented minnesota. Screw Suggs and Bueckers and Holloman. I'm sick and tired of reading that this its reasonable and ok he went here because of this and that. Unfortunately the Oturus of the world are few and far between these days. Too many Hurts dreaming of his glory at Duke just to go undrafted and forgotten in ten years. Hate these kids think they are ripping minnesota from a different state. That's stupid.

Mn kid. Johnson from Mn. Asst at Mn and X. BJ knew tre and tre knew BJ. For quite a while I would guess. Telling that you need to make excuses.

Marooned does not want Mn to win. I don’t doubt that at all.

Nice reach. Kids make their choices. Surprisingly only a few asked me where they should go.

Marooned will be by shortly to provide guidance regarding kids college choices.

Just a difference of opinion but i know kids who love the state but choose to go to a school out of state. I see this in every state. I think it is a great thing for young people to take advantage of getting away as often as possible. No matter where i go i still represent my home state, even more so my hometown.

I don't think there is anything wrong with having pride in their home state - but it's how we (the people of MN and the media) treat them that is different in this state. Minnesotans love Minnesotans. But, we're not talking about Paige Bueckers or Jalen Suggs if the U is bumping them off the front page. It's up to the programs to win and get the coverage so the media doesn't have to go digging for the local angle in major sporting events. And we haven't won enough - but I expect that to change with the direction Whalen is going and where I think Ben will build to.

So you think BJ was selling the U to Tre before being HC? 🤔

😂 you do you. I’m willing to have an honest discussion. Clearly you do not.

Do you have to be born here to be loved at the highest level or just win ? Seems like so many of the most beloved people in Minnesota were not from Minnesota.

Was BJ selling himself to tre? Since becoming an asst coach? Did BJ not say he has worked to become a hc for a long time?

be honest.

Your opinion. Does outsider approve?

So Minnesotans and the Mn media are complicit in losing?

I’m sure he was selling himself and Xavier, but was Tre even remotely interested in Xavier as a destination? Besides, the discussions of “Come to Xavier where I’m an assistant coach where we follow the head coach’s philosophy” vs “Come to MN where I’m the HC following my philosophy” are different things. Or do you not believe that? Be honest.

I don’t care where kids come from but when a coach is brought in to recruit locally and is lauded for that ability and misses top kids...it’s a bad look. Either for the coach or the AD or both
The AD tried to sell the hire of Johnson on his ability to keep the highest rated and most sought after recruits at home. Until Ben Johnson actually proves he can land the most highly regarded in-state recruits there will be criticism and rightfully so.

Meh...

This is a huge miss, there's no sugarcoating it. Remember when some people used the excuse on Camden that his parents were Purdue alums? Well Tre's mom is a Gopher and actually lives in Minnesota...still a miss. People preaching patience are going against what the plan was here. Mark Coyle hired a guy with no resume specifically because of his alleged ability to land Minnesota kids. Tre specifically is ranked around #70 and I was worried that peoples expectations of him were too high. He's a small guard and I have concerns about his outside shot. He's not Amir Coffey, much less Daniel Oturu (and certainly not Humphries or Royce or Rickert), but he would have been a very symbolic get for Johnson in addition to being a good player.

The excuse of doing things slow just doesn't work. This will be Gopher fan's FIFTH straight losing conference season. At what point is enough...ENOUGH? I can already read the excuses next year if Chatham goes elswehere: "Well how can you expect Ben to recruit him over established program X when he's coming off a 8-15 season?" And on and on the excuses will go. That's how we had Monson for 8 years and then Pitino for another 8. As long as you can come up with a reason to rationalize failure (and there will always be something at almost any program), you can continue in the same direction.

Fans need to stop expecting kids to stay home "because it's Minnesota". The first thing is always going to be trust in the coaching staff to help that kid reach his goals, regardless of where the kid is from. It's telling that much like Pitino, we don't appear to be in on any top 100 kids from out of state either. If there was a kid from Michigan rated around 70 to replace the "Tre" spot, I wouldn't care. We simply are not in the game for anyone at that level.

Things could work out. If you want to have hope, there are certainly places to look (I personally like a lot of what I've seen from some of the guys they have offered out of state). We're already to the point though where we need to hope that Ben Johnson is an above average B1G bench coach immediately or it's hard to see how this ever gets off the ground with below average B1G recruiting.

I noticed this as well. I'll be curious to see how he reacts when Izzo is actually coaching him instead of recruiting. I would think it will be fine if Tre is willing to put the work in but Izzo struggled to ever connect with Rocket Watts and get the full potential out of him. Watts was a 5-star recruit. I expect him to break out a little bit down at Mississippi St this year. A lot more freedom there with Howland.

Not saying it won't work out, I just think it'll be a little eye-opening for Tre when he's not allowed to do whatever he wants out there. Of course this is probably true for most of these high talent kids coming out of high school.
First of all, let me start by saying we all wanted Tre to play for the U. From all accounts that you hear, Tre is a well respected young man and a great kid. I haven’t followed any of his play, but earlier today I watched the video of him in the game that Ola-Joseph made the monster dunk. It sure looked like he has an attitude that Izo will need to work on. He complained to a referee on a call, looked very cocky. Not trying to come off as attacking him, but it just jumped out at me. This was way before he announced where he was going.

Izzo seems like a stand-up guy in interviews, but I can’t believe that kids in this day and age want to play for him. I can think of 2-3 nationally televised incidents where he has either gotten physical with a player or nearly lost control, including players coming back at him. Imagine what practice is like???? You think that would fly at the U of M? This is big loss.

Many young people if they have a very good alternative for college in another state choose to go there to experience life in another state.
Why should MN athletes leaving for another university cause more pain than a MN student with a perfect ACT score choosing not to go to the U of MN?
MIST's BB program has had decades of success compared to MN's record.
I grant you MN is a far better academic school but for some long people athletics are more important.

Last year the Strib devoted far more attention to Bueckers than it did to the Gopher women. If Tre has success at MSU, I expect the same next year as well.

The Strib assumes that their readers would rather read about MN kids that left rather than MN kids that stayed. Either that, or the head of the Strib sports dept. is a badger or a hawkeye.
