Curious what his coach, Rob Reeves' input was on the decision. Wonder if he's bitter toward the U?

You sayin Standford isn’t in the Ivy League??
I’ll bite: Stanford is not in the Ivy league. It is one of the great and leading universities in the nation. But, furthest west Ivy is Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Can’t fault a kid for picking Stanford over any school …

Who knows? All I know is that he had followed Country Jer and the Gang around from his playing days in college up until the end of the Claeys era. Can't imagine he's much of a boat-rower.

Stanford is often referred to as the ivy of the West. I am sure that is the spirit of the post.

I feel like that's like me saying "most kids drink Pepsi" because Pepsi is "the choice of a new generation".

I think I'd still be wrong despite the existence of the idiom ;)

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.
Just like the other 70% top rated MN kids that didn’t drink what Fleck offers. This is not acceptable!

“Hello Houston! We have a problem”

If you're measuring recruiting success ONLY with MN kids ... you're doing it wrong.

By that measurement you could do great in MN, and absolutely suck as a team. MN recruits aren't going to be what gets us where we want to be.

MN kids.

CC, Barber, Renner, Martin, etc seemed to get the job done.

I think Slab of Bacon is PJ Fleck in a Gopher's costume. I agree with BayfieldGopher, you don't dominate your state you do not dominate on the football field. All of the surrounding states Rosters are dominated by their own kids, Iowa, Wisconsin, NDSU. Fleck is recruiting his home state and goes down to Georgia to find athletes that are being ignored in their state by the big programs. I guess guys like Johnson cannot make it happen. NDSU is getting many of these kids. The state kids know the deal. The Gophers are not the only team with returners and transfers, we go a little better then .500 this year and then all Sh-- will break loose.

Fleck is not for everyone. Minneapolis is not for everyone. We will get kids because of who Fleck is and we will get kids because they love the opportunity that playing in a city like Minneapolis brings. Fleck does need to do a better job of getting the top kids to stay home (if we want to take things to the next level). Local kids are the low hanging fruit for any program and Minnesota is no different. However, PJ has created a brand that has national recognition and he is going a very good job (not great) of getting recruits from all over. The key will be keeping the momentum going, which means success on the field and getting kids drafted into the NFL.

not this again

Imagine the 2019 squad without them. Not a very good thought. I think it was Warmath who said he gets the arms and legs from other places but the heart and sole of the team comes from Minnesota guys.
imagine where they'd be without tanner morgan, rashod bateman, mo ibrahim

If 2019 was a mirage, Fleck will be fired, but I don't think it'll have anything to do with his ability or lack of to recruit MN kids

It goes both ways ... imagine the team without ... all the other guys?

MN isn't getting better because of just locals, and by the time they dominate local recruiting ... it will be because they're doing so well they won't need most of them.

Getting all caught up on recruiting one area that is not rich in talent is not going to get this team better.

Recruiting has changed since Murry...

Pretty sure it was Mitch Leidner.
Good guess, but it was, in fact, Lou Holtz. Here's the full quote:

"It's nice to keep local stars from straying out of the home galaxy, but there's one cruel truth about Minnesota football: It will never be great again if it must rely primarily on Minnesota players. The body and soul of this team will come from Minnesota, but for arms and legs we will have to go elsewhere."

You forgot Nebraska.

Huh....guess maybe Bayfield should have checked the full quote before using it to back up his point....

This happens every time a high rated local kid commits to some other school besides the Gophers. A handful of posters come in moaning and wailing because "one of us" left and they act like it is the fault of the coaches for not being able to get the kid to stay.

Well, at one time PJ thought that recruiting Minnesota players was important.

“No. 1 thing in this culture in this program is recruiting,” Fleck said in his introductory news conference. “You know where we’re going to start? And you know where we’re going to build walls up around? Our elite state of Minnesota.”

Yes he did, probably still does. And?

What does that mean to you?

And now he doesn't? Look, if you want to be obtuse, just shut up. That's what ruins threads.

Agreed. Can't fault an athlete for going to an Ivy League especially Standford with a top notch alumni network, location, and in a Power 5.
Curious. Is an education at Hill Murray much better than at Stillwater where he from?

Tommyboy I'm convinced you're one of the other big 10 coaches in a Gopher Costume.

I could put together a competitive team with the majority being from Minnesota. No sh--, you have to recruit nationally. In the distant past kids would attend SJU instead of the University, because of their record, you have kids at NDSU that had offers with the gophers, TE from Crosby. I think you have more top end players from Minnesota on the Wisconsin team. The point is you have to get these kids to stay home and create a similar atmosphere in Minnesota. With the amount of Red Bull Fleck has drank and being a young coach, he should be getting players from all over.
