All Things 2021 Gophers Basketball Recruiting Thread

Nope, I was just pointing out that players go to schools that play a specific style that fits them, not that the school caters the style to whatever player comes in.

And no, Ben did not state "we will play this style". He stated he will figure that out once the roster is complete.
So you think Ben is doing Zoom calls with recruits & has no idea what style of play he wants to do. You cant be that idiotic. There is no way he is doing a final push via Zoom without at least giving some film of how they would fit the style he wants to play

Exactly! There is no way hes talking to recruits saying well I wish I could tell ya what kind of style were gonna play, but I have no idea.

Well he has never been a head coach before....so he probably has no idea what kind of style he wants to play. We aren't even sure if he knows how to call a time out or which end of the bench he should sit on yet.

If SDSU is also out and it's Utah vs. the Gophers, it's a must-win for Ben. He can't lose a MN kid to Craig Smith....

If Mitchell is choosing between the Gophers and Utah, I like our chances. I really don't see what Utah has to offer (other than better weather and more impressive scenery) over here. When I was in Salt Lake, I drove up the hill to campus and my ears popped from the elevation. Unnerving. I liked the city though.

San Diego State would have been a different matter. They're almost a shoo-in for the NCAA tournament and I can't imagine a better location to spend one's optional year.

Well im just a high school baseball coach and if someone wanted to hire me to be a head college basketball coach i know the style i would want to play, so im guessing deep down Ben Johnson has thought about this before as hes been an assistant for so many years. Just because he's never been a head coach doesnt mean he has never thought about what style he thinks is best to be successful.

I was being sarcastic....Ben Johnson is a pretty bright guy....I'm sure he will do just fine with the concerns some our posters have brought up.

Is this the first SDGF post you've responded to?

True but unlike the guy at Iowa State who has been a head coach before, Ben has no track record of implementing the style he wants to play. That likely has an impact on recruits who are way more sophisticated than they were 25 years ago. That’s also why I’m concerned about class of 22 recruiting. He doesn’t have anything to show them. Externally at least, there hasn’t been any success selling a vision on higher level recruits yet. Right now all he has to sell is best conference in the country and a vision. Someone (Tre????) needs to buy the vision pretty soon or we could be in for another season of poor recruiting.

Listening to Ben, he has identified the profile of player he wants, which helps him determine who to recruit. This in turn will help define the style of basketball he runs.

Great response. Thank you. It's laughable people don't think Ben has a style he's going to play right now. They don't know how recruiting (especially over zoom calls) works. We should be happy Ben is getting dudes that take care of the ball and you can already tell our offensive will have more movement and flow. You can also tell that defense and toughness are priority number 1. That's most important.

Let me ask you, how many of our new "commits" have said "i picked MN because their style fits me. None, they have for the most part mentioned they believe in the vision that coach Johnson has..

feel free to look up part of why Chet or King went elsewhere in their answer to why they chose their school,, ill help you, it includes, their style fits me perfectly and its what i want to play.

Johnson and thor keep mentioning, we want guys that want to be here.

Is it so far fetched that these kids "WANT" to be a gopher and help coach build out his vision.

BJ is suppose to be a good recruiter, why can't he recruit kids with the idea of what success looks like for the Gopher in the long term but will put together what style they will play come summer with a full team.

Watch the IG video and listen to his own words.

Gritty is an attitude, not a style of play

How many of our recruits have said that when choosing the U because of the style of play during Pitino time? This is just nit-picking. If you pay attention to the kids who have committed and the hiring of the Richmond coach they seem to be moving towards a 5 out offense with an emphasis on spacing and ball movement. If you think they cant show clips of other teams running similar sets to which they are planning to run then you don't have a clue about coaching or recruiting. When coaches have virtual coaches clinics they show clips of other schools as well as theirs. Ben hasn't been a head coach but he isn't some dude off the street who has never coached before.

You're exhausting

you hit the nail on the head, Pitino was not a good hc here. He relied solely on the talent of his starters to carry him.

Why do you think he was quoted as saying "i tell them not to shoot too many 3's" yet they shot sooo many 3's.

Pitino is a great example of why we need a good style of play, not just, hey Carr, shoot it as much as you want, give me 40 points.

It's also why Pitino is no longer here. Thanks for helping me make my point.

Let’s see is it possible that talk about the coaches vision would include discussion about how the individual fits within the program? Call me crazy. And if a kid didn’t like how he was going to fit in the system why would he say he likes the coaches vision.... comical..

He isn’t a dude off the street, no.

To most any kid playing bb, he is an unknown. At best.

How is it making your point when we got recruits without style of play being a factor? 😂 You really dont have a point. You are saying recruits need to know the style of play which is foolish to assume they aren’t receiving that information. I just don’t get why you keep bringing up style of play when Tubby claimed in his press conference we were going to be a full court pressure uptempo team but in reality we were a half court Hi-Low team offensively and never pressed during big ten play. All coaches say whatever during a press conference but that won’t factor into recruiting.

Most coaches are unknown to recruits any way. You think a recruit from Minnesota can name the head coach at Rutgers or Penn State? Ben is the coach we all probably don’t agree on the hire but the constant nit picking non issues is dumb. How many kids actually know the new Iowa State coach. Most college coaches aren’t household names

Put the troll on ignore, makes reading the board much more productive.

Exactly. And from the interviews he really values players that can shoot ("making baskets can overcome a lot of other issues"), play in your face defense, are real students of the game and not just athletes. He has said many times that the actual style will depend upon the current mix of players. He hates zone... etc, etc.. A lot of it is already out there to understand, the doubters have just got to do a little more homework instead of just bitching about it and demonstrating about how little effort they are willing to put into giving Coach Johnson a chance.

If they are receiving that information then why can’t BJ tell anyone publicly? BJ keeps saying the style will be determined by the players he gets. So now we are in the chicken or the egg, can’t get great players if you can’t articulate your style, but won’t declare a style until you get players. People who keep saying he is telling recruits the style, if this is true why can’t he tell anyone else, why does he have to keep it secret?

Give me specific examples of what explanations you think you need from the coach as to what style he wants to play. What would you say if your were the coach and asked to describe the style that you want to play.

See Iowa State picked up Brockington from Penn State today. The new coach is off to a good start. I personally think the Iowa State job right now was a better situation than the Gophers job for a new coach. Still pretty hopeful about the new staff .

That's not what he said though. He said it would partly be based on what players are here which every coach in America would say.

I mean the reality is the “homework” you are suggesting is listening to his coach speak. There’s no real evaluation until there is tape on his team’s play. Pitino was going to run his dad’s defense and Billy’s offense - neither really ever happened. Pitino said he wanted shooters, praised his teams for how great they shot in practice, but it never manifested.

None of this coach speak matters. None of the “doubters” matter. None of the fan “homework” matters. Nothing matters right now except for the individual conversations he’s having with recruits. Next year, there will be tape to tell the story, but right now, it’s all conjecture.
