Mike Woodson To Indiana

He has some sort of back problem. I just remember when he was still coaching, he had to wear a brace on one leg because he had no feeling in it and had foot drop.

Yikes, that would suck.

Yes, we hired worse unfortunately....like bringing mark Madson in to shoot a three pointer.
I’m not getting the mocking of the hire. While I don’t think it’s spectacular, I see it as much more likely to succeed over what Minnesota did. At a minimum I think Gopher fans should lay low and see how things play out with BJ before mocking other hires. Glasshouses and stuff.

Would not walk away to take care of his health. They did him a favor. Highest winning % in conference history.
His worst four seasons at tOSU were probably the last 4. Health a definite factor. But being 6 games over .500 in the conference and missing the tournament twice doesn’t fly there. Guessing the firing was as much about performance as it was health—even if performance was due in part to health.

Maybe our hire and Indiana's are great hires. Let's give it some time before we judge anything.
It’s a message board. Why do people want to wait and not comment? Very boring if we cant give input on anything until we see how it plays out. We could finally talk about Eric Curry committing since we’ve seen how it played out.

They hired a basketball guy, it seems to be the trend. Michigan is doing ok with it.

Has anyone in the history of time ever not hired a basketball guy for a heading coaching job?

Age alone. I wasn’t crazy about Dutcher or Belilein because of age, but they’re good enough coaches, it could have worked. This dude is just as old, but is starting at ground zero in even learning the college game, recruiting, academics, etc. BJ at least is young and already in the college game. In this instance, I’ll take the guy with no HC experience.

Yeah, I don't know why there's celebration around here about this choice. Clyde Drexler may have failed at Houston but Juwan Howard is sure doing very well at Michigan.
I think all these guys without HC experience getting jobs in the B1G need to send Juwan a very nice thank you card. Now, each time a hire like this happens, the response is “but it worked at Michigan!”, somehow justifying a questionable hire.

Is Pitino really a basketball guy, I doubt he is any more of one than you or I. He may study it a bit more but from a competitive on court perspective he has no more insight than you or I. Does it matter, maybe not, I think it does.

It's an interesting hire, but Woodson has been a successful assistant, and head coach for a long time in the NBA. There's no doubt he can coach.

With Matta's help, and the right assistant hires, he could be successful at Indiana.

Everyone trying to pretend they can get as lucky as Michigan did?

smh
It's like when your neighbor hits the lottery. You see that playing the lottery paid out for them, so you quit your job and start putting your life savings into playing the powerball, assuming the same thing will happen to you. "If it worked for them, it has to work for me!" I mean, is it possible? Sure. Probable? Not likely.

The retort is often, "if he surrounds himself with good assistants, he could be successful". And in this case, add in Thad Matta in whatever nebulous faux-coach position they have him in, and people are thinking this could work. Well, if you need to hire an assistant AD that was a highly successful basketball coach, and you need to hire the perfect assistants to prop up your head coach, I would argue you probably hired the wrong head coach. Couldn't you just hire those same assistants and associate AD with a proven collegiate head coach and make your chances at success that much higher?

In a related note, I saw on the ticker last night that Texas was looking to interview Royal Ivey for their HC position (presumably if Beard is unable to be bought). Apparently they are also looking to punch their Juwan Howard ticket.

I think Indiana was all in on Thad Matta, but he failed his physical or something so they passed. I know Thad has had health issues. This is from my buddy who is a Buckeye Alum and insider.

It's possible that both are bad hires.

Woodson is apparently in contact with Larry Brown about coming on board in some capacity.

You mean the 80 year old Brown whose last gig resulted in sanctions for SMU? Man, I hope that happens. Somebody get me some popcorn! What could possibly go wrong?
Not just at SMU, but also way back in the late '80s with Kansas, leaving them to deal with sanctions after he fled to the NBA. He also was a pioneer, bringing Ed Manning on board as an assistant, with his son Danny to follow--if I remember correctly, this was the first instance of the blatant hiring of a family member to procure the commitment of a standout player. Yes, please, bring noble Larry Brown on board :).

I know, I know, it's Larry Brown and the cheating, but what a career. I mean this dude has done it all. Amazing.

What I read or saw suggested Larry would be on-campus instruction only, and not connected with recruiting. Not likely to allow him to repeat his past indiscretions, easily anyway.
