2021-2022 Roster

OK....fire away! With the recent transfers, coaching changes, and those in the portal, here is what I hope our 2021-2022 roster looks like...

Only 2 players that are important for us to keep, if possible:
Liam Robbins
Brandon Johnson

Most likely and impactful three transfers from the portal, some which are for short-term gain and others for long-term gain:
Jamison Battle
Dawson Garcia
Ishmael El-Amin

Only recruit I care to keep, based solely on potential:
Treyton Thompson

Key transfers that would make a sudden impact:
Race Thompson
Daniel Roddy

Up-and -comer:
Isaiah Ihnen

Great gamble:
Parker Fox

Glue guy:
Gabe Kalscheur

Take a flier on a position of need, with an inside track:
C.J. Wilcher
KyKy Tandy

Fill out the roster:
Jarvis Omersa or Martice Mitchell

Go ahead and 'blow it up'!
I'm fine for Ish El-Amin to fill this year's roster but I don't see the value he brings to the Big Ten. He was an inefficient scorer on a bad MAC team and he has poor shot selection

Here's where they're at right now.

Based upon only those who haven't entered the portal and those who have committed for next season, here's what we've got. Need some guards. Sticking Gach at PG because he's the only one on the current roster who could play there.

Center
Liam Robbins
Kenny Pohto
Treyton Thompson

PF
Brandon Johnson
Martice Mitchell

SF
Isaiah Ihnen
Jamison Battle

OG
Gabe Kalscheur

PG
Both Gach
That's a joke right? Have you seen his handle. I held my breath everytime he had the ball. Would like to see his turnover/ touch ratio. Awful!

Some BIG assumptions here. I see no reason Roddy transfers, I see no reason Garcia transfers. Have we had any word Johnson is coming back? There is a LONG way to go in this. At least unlike 15 years ago it's fairly doable to put together a new roster with transfers late in the spring

You can quickly retool a roster with this mass transfer portal game coaches/players are doing this year. Garcia isn't coming here. Roddy does nothing for me and I would much rather have Race Thompson a proven Big-10 player. Goch isn't a guard, especially not a PG. Ish El-Amin is fine, they need another ball handler. I'm sure there are plenty of options out there.

I agree you can def fill a roster with the portal. I think it is getting beyond annoying that we are only naming Minnesota kids or coaches with Minnesota connections for every thread. There def better options than Ish El Amin or better options the Race at Forward in the portal. I don't get why we are only mentioning Minnesota connections only for everything

Minnesota kids have a better chance of being cleared to play right away. So if it isn’t a grad transfer and you can’t afford to wait taking a local kid does help a lot in getting them on the floor.
I’d take Race over Fox or Johnson seven days a week and twice on Sunday! Just don’t know if he wants to come home.
Need guards who can handle. Ish isn’t know to be the prototypical PG we need. Kyky may not get eligibility.
Is there a grad trans PG Ben has ties to out there?
Cause that is what we need!

Everyone is getting the one-time pass. So we don't have to worry about anyone sitting. I think people are underestimating Fox. He has High Major Athleticism and a better motor than Johnson or Omersa. He can definitely play. His shooting needs improvement but he will be a better defender than both and a better finisher

At the end of the day, if all other things are equal, I'd rather have a guy with a "lower ceiling" in terms of basketball ability, but who works his butt off to prove he "belongs" at this level and wants to be at Minnesota, than the other way around.

Have to keep Kalscheur. Please no Roddy - totally not a Big Ten player having watched him a few times. There is a reason he ended up where he is. Can’t guard a 5 for sure due to height and struggle with anyone else due to lack of quickness.

We are getting pretty picky now. Is he a Big10 player? Maybe not, but better player than what we have.

I'd take Roddy in a millisecond, coming along with Thorson. See post #38.

Another thing on Fox.

Illinois took a DII transfer from Wesleyan, Austin Hutcherson two years ago. He sat out last year and was expected to be a key price for them off the bench this year before getting hurt. He averaged 20 and 5 two years ago and was not an all American.

If he’s good enough for Illinois then a first team all American who put up 22, 9.6 and 3.2 blocks is probably good enough for us.

He’s not better than Johnson, and can’t defend like Ihnen. We can find as good or better players - would want multiple no’s before taking him. Also, with a real offense and coaching I think a Ihnen can improve significantly on offense. He has three years left. All that said, why would Roddy leave a perfect situation for him, from featured player to role player?

Prove the Gophers should've taken him from the start, try to be a solid player in the Big Ten, big step up, come home, play in front of friends and family each night.

I agree people are under estimating Fox. If he proves himself he could start next to Liam and Battle starting as well with two more guards.

Well, based off what you said that isnt exactly the best example. Sure, it does not mean Fox wont be good enough.

But in your own words this Hutcherson dude hasnt even played a game. Was he good enough to get a look? Sure. But that was years ago. That was before Cockburn and Ayo had truly turned things around. Looking at Illinois roster this current season, I find it hard to believe that dude woulda been getting much PT.

I don't know if Battle starts at the small forward spot. I see him playing more stretch 4 minutes than 3 man. More of a Brandon Johnson Role where he can play both but you will see him at the 4 spot more

I am surprised this board ever wanted to get rid of Pitino. He also loved length, athleticism, and versatility. With a secondary focus of actually being able to put a basketball in the basket.

Strange that this board tends to rip apart every possible transfer or recruit that actually scores baskets and then still is unhappy that we are a bunch of athletes running around the court clanging shots off the rim and turning the ball over.

I think that people worry when they see a guy like Demir who came in here from Drexel where he averaged almost 15 pts 6 boards and he was at 7 and 5 in the Big Ten and a huge defensive liability.
That obviously doesn't happen across the board but there is always the concern that what was done at a lower level may not be transferrable. I trust Johnson will sort this out.

Yeah I can see that, but I do think it is a sliding scale. I think some years it makes a lot of sense to say that getting it done in the Colonial conference isn't going to cut it in the Big 10. But I think sometimes it is it is just lazy to say that being able to score in the Mountain West is a huge step down from scoring in the Big 10.

The funny thing is Pitinos recruiting was pretty similar to Tubbys.

Demir wasn't very athletic, that was his downfall.

You also have examples like Robbins, who only averaged 2 points less than he did in the Missouri Valley, and averaged a similar number rebound and blocks .

The trick is to get the guys who are athletes running around the court, with length, that actually score baskets.

I didn’t say he will be the point guard, I said based upon the current roster he’s the only one who could handle it. I suspect that they will bring in 1-2 pg’s when all is said and done.

I'm really hoping Jameson Battle is going to be playing the 4. He is a big bodied guy who will really struggle guarding guys on the perimeter. I'd rather have him be attacked on the block - - it's significantly better for the defense.

Also - Garcia is a pretty ideal 4 for Shaka's system. He is staying at Marquette.

OK....so let's say Garcia is OUT (and now so is Mitchell)...

Here is my new HOPEFUL roster:

Liam Robbins
Brandon Johnson
Jamison Battle
Treyton Thompson
Race Thompson
Parker Fox
Isaiah Ihnen
Gabe Kalscheur
Ishmael El-Amin
David Roddy
KyKy Tandy
Both Gach
Kenny Pohto or Jarvis Omersa

I doubt Omersa comes back
