Next Gopher Head Coach

Prior to the Mountain West tournament I wanted Musselman or Dutcher or Medved. I was not high on Smith because he doesn't feel like an exciting hire but the more I watch Smith coach he has jumped to my number 1 spot. He is one of the best in-game coaches around and everywhere he has gone he has won. He develops players and creates a system that maximizes his players abilities. He is so prepared for every situation and runs great plays that really stresses defenses. He kind of reminds me of a Brad Stevens with his sets and how he always has a play for every situation.

Like you, there are a number of guys I would be happy with but Smith is my number 1 now. He is the kind of coach that would be tough to beat even if he had inferior talent. His teams play really hard and his offensive sets are really beautiful.

The SDSU/Utah State game is on youtube. Both team are impressive. They play hard, they're tough, they're sets are difficult to defend and modern. Both coaches are impressive, but Craig Smith is my #1.

So what happens to the 4 star recruits Treyton Thompson and Kenny Pohto?

Honestly i think they're replaceable but I'd bet the new coach will keep them as we'll likely have transfers...Will be interesting

From what I can remember, I think Alvin Ellis and Alex Foster both decommitted after Tubby left and before Pitino was even hired. I wonder if Pohto and Thompson will decommit immediately, or maybe Pitino can convince Pohto to follow him to his next stop, if indeed he is going to be hired elsewhere shortly.

to be honest, i think i'll be happy with any of the top 4-5 guys that are being floated here. after the pitino era ran long, really anything is going to feel like an optimistic breath of fresh air

I’d take a look at Avery Johnson too. He has had some success at both the college and NBA level. Not sure if he’s be interested, but surprised no one mentioned him yet.

I think Alabama basketball was placed on probation because of shenanigans during Avery's tenure. I didn't follow it closely enough to know if he was alleged to be involved.

I don't think Norwood tried very hard to get them to stay and meet the new coach.

Dutcher is mine. Both teams play great defense.

Just watched a few post game press conferences from some of the coaching candidates.

- Dutcher just looks and sounds like he coached my grandfather...
- Musselmen is colorful, he had a tough one after a bad lose to LSU, very frustrated
- Gates, seems very professional and answers the questions
- Smith, ok...
- Pitino will be a hard act to follow, he typically did a good job

Thompson ain’t going anywhere. Unless the new coaching staff tells him to look around. Pohto is not coming here without lindsted and pitino.

He was ~ age 7-12 during his dad's Gopher tenure. I'd consider that a significant/important part of childhood.
If you're defining childhood as 5-12, well then I suppose.

I remember 13-18 quite well and consider that the most important part of my "growing up", while 7-12 I don't recall as well and is meh. But that's me.

I don't think he considers himself as having "grown up in Minnesota". That's a guess.

If press conferences won games ...

In other words, he won the MAAC.
No matter, it was another in long line of great coaching jobs. He put that roster together and turned them beyond quick. Short season impacted by Covid, but say what you want he could always coach and still can.

I really wish the Gophers could've hired Nate Oats a couple years ago before he left Buffalo...insane start to his career.

6 years as a head coach so far between Buffalo and Alabama, 3 regular season conference championships, 4 conference tournament championships in that time. Insane.

And think of prior to Buffalo. . .11 years at Detroit Romulus HS. Credit to Buffalo.

Does anybody no what kind of relationship Dave holmgren had with Jim dutcher when he played for him maybe chets holding out for Brian wishfull thinking
I’m definitely here for this particular conspiracy theory. It goes something like this: Jim and Dave remain close. Brian tells his dad the Gophers job is going to be his, so Dutch feeds it to Dave and has Chet delay his decision so Brian can back door Few at the 11th hour. Then I wake up.

Hurt gets inspired and transfers home...
