Now that Gates is out, we have one less candidate to debate over. I was hoping for him being the youngest out the group, but knew the Boston College connections were not in our favor.

Edit: Add Dutcher to that list too.

Wisconsin is evidence this isn't true...they recruit low 4 star guys at best. They have lower rated guys than us almost every year and yet they tied for the big ten regular season championship last year and are locks for the tourney this year

Muss talks on our local morning sports show in the mornings often here and he has mentioned growing up in San Diego always wearing a UCLA, UNLV, and Arkansas shirt while he was in high school. Arkansas also has Walton and Jerry Jones money. Nobody will outbid them.

Realistically my favorite candidates are Smith, Gates and Dutcher (he might be a long shot as well). Another good coach is North Texas HC Grant McCasland.

I also live in Dallas and I will agree Ark is top notch support-wise, history, etc. and yes deep pockets if they like their coach. NW Ark is nice, but for similar reasons a coach might leave near perfect weather for tundra, cant assume Musselman would not leave Ark. That said I think most here will be surprised if Musselman is hired. Fortunately, many other grood caoches keep surfacing on this board and lots of confidence in Coyle to make a good hire.

No... Because of the fact that he just renegotiated his contract with SDSU and included a much lower buyout only for Minnesota ( 6.95 mil vs. 1 mil for MN) shows that Dutcher wants the Gopher job. No doubts about it...

Might go right back to those "local ties thing," huh...? If Musselman (and Dutcher, for that matter) has the desire to come back to Minnesota and restore the family name... or honor the family legacy... for whatever reason, could those local ties mean enough...?

Then explain why he included a sweetheart buyout clause in his recently renegotiated contract for only for Minnesota... He's got a 6.95 million buyout... except just 1 million for Minnesota.

I tend to think he’d listen, but the buyout demonstrates that he has (or at least had) an interest in the job generally, that doesn’t necessarily mean he has an interest in the job opening right now.

What has Ben done to prove he’s a worthy heir apparent? He’s a great dude, does well on the recruiting trail, but what about his tenure here or anywhere else makes you think he’s a better up and comer than someone else?

I really don't get the Ben hype. If he wasn't from Minnesota would anyone be talking about him?
 


Are the gates to BC rumors legit or are those just flying around right now?

This idea that we name the coach in waiting along with a hire is a little nuts. The new head coach needs to bring in a team he can work with, first and foremost. If one of those individuals demonstrate the ability to be a head coach, along with the interest to wait a few years to get the job, great. I don't think we would know that for 4-5 years at least as if the coach is being successful, even Dutcher, will probably be in the positioon for 10+ years. If he's not being successful, we don't want a coach in waiting from the staff.

Pretty good. Dutcher's not bad either - 16-2 in past two years in Feb and March. I prefer Dutcher, but Smith not a bad fallback. We would likely be better off with either of them.

Odd to have the buyout exception if he's not interested. The MN job isn't any worse than it was 18 months ago.

He was 60 when he signed that contract. Pretty obviously he was going to have one shot at the Minnesota job. This is it. Having that put in your contract and 18 months later saying "hard pass" to it makes no sense. There won't be another chance down the road.
