Word in college basketball circles is that a decision that Richard Pitino wouldn’t be returning as University of Minnesota men’s basketball coach was made 10 days ago. There have been more than a dozen names mentioned as a Gophers coaching replacement.

Take your pick: Eric Musselman, Brian Dutcher, Ryan Saunders, Craig Smith, Niko Medved, Sam Mitchell, Tim Miles, J.B. Bickerstaff, Leon Rice, Casey Alexander, Dennis Gates and Porter Moser.

Meanwhile, a little birdie says Pitino could be interviewed for the New Mexico and South Florida jobs.

Go Gophers!!

If this were true why did Pitino act like nothing was discussed with Coyle on his radio show?...Such a disingenuous and arrogant man...good riddance.

The AD fires the coach. He makes the announcement, not the coach. If Pitino said he was no longer the coach, that’s a resignation.
The AD has not publicly fired the coach.
Very likely he said...”Let’s keep this between the two of us. I just wanted you to know. “ If, If it happened at all.
Not Pitino’s job to announce it no matter what.

Dreamland, next you're going to tell me something truly preposterous; that free agent contracts are negotiated before free agency opens in pro sports.

Johnson has the heart of a lion. I really hope he stays.

He literally lied when asked about his job status....He said I have had no discussions like that with Mr. Coyle..suck it, bro

Braindead, it is not Pitino’s job to break the news he is fired.

He was asked point blank and he said we have had no discussions like that and I have his full support.

I have seen plenty of coaches say they have been relieved of their duties before an actual statement was put out.
Good. Maybe they had a buyout and trusted the AD. Maybe they didn’t have a buyout.
Maybe they thought they’d get sympathy and keep their job. Lots of reasons you might do it but not many are rational.

Richard has coaching flaws. The majority of coaches run into bad luck. Richard had more bad luck than anybody coaching that I have ever heard about. One thing after another each season.

Did you just start following the program? Richard has had awful injury & transfer luck, that isn't breaking news lmao.
Every team has injuries and players leave...There is no excuse for his pathetic recruiting and player development....Being 40 plus games under .500 doesnt happen because of bad luck...It's a bad program being run.

How do know its not correct?
I just commented above that I seen plenty of coaches in wide range of sports say they have been let go before an official announcement was made by the GM/AD/Owner etc.

True....it really sucked how he recruited players like Marcus Carr, Amir Coffey, Nate Mason, Jordan Murphy, Dan Oturu.

Lol....You named 5 players in 8 years....None of them are starters in the NBA...How bout all the recruits he missed on that wanted to come here and the recruits that flaked out?...There is a reason his record is god awful and it's not bad luck.

Starters in the NBA? How many dudes did Tubby even put in the NBA? Monson?

And please do tell me the "recruits he missed on that wanted to come here"? M Wright went elsewhere because Richard took a way higher rated player, ya know, Mr. basketball of NY Isaiah Washington

I'm sure you loved when Isaiah Washington committed here. Keep this same energy next season when Carr, Mash, Robbins all leave. No excuses for the new coach
