Next Gopher Head Coach

Nearly every single name here has one thing in common: Dutcher, Smith, Medved, Miles, Alexander, Miller, Kelsey, Stansbury, DeVries, Musselman, Beilein, Matta, etc. They are all white.

Coyle's hires at the U: Motzko, Fleck, Whalen, and giving Pitino an extension (thus endorsing him as "his guy") - again, all white. And while I hope and expect we will hire the best coach no matter their skin color, Coyle absolutely will look at black candidates as well. And if all things are equal, he will hire a black candidate.

I'm not sure if that will be Damon Stoudamire, Kelvin Sampson (!!!), a top assistant, etc. but we need to broaden our perspective.

Go Gophers!!
Coyle is going to hire a black coach. I believe that the coach/manager of every college and professional sports team in this market is white and it's time for that to change. I assume that there will be excellent black candidates (not retreads) who will want this job and one of them will be hired.

Does Hugh McCutcheon know anything about bball? His volleyball team appears to know how to handle life on the road
Not 100%, but I do believe McCutcheon, Fleck and Pitino have chatted about various topics within their programs. There was an article some time ago about this.

Hmm.

That eliminates a bunch of highly qualified candidates. Time for it to change? 50% of the last 4 coaches at MN have been black.

Your statements do reflect what is actually happening in the world of hiring, however.

So I was thinking about this. Assuming we have a new coach, could we be in for a TOTAL roster overhaul?
Carr is gone
Robbins I assume leaves if his uncle is canned
Johnson gone
Curry gone
Jarvis doesn't return
Mitchell got 0 min and new coach seems logical he leaves
Mashburn had that Pitino connection and could go anywhere he wanted
Gach it just hasn't worked, certainly could leave

That leaves Gabe (assume he stays) and then Tre and Freeman, who both could certainly leave. Could 11 new players really be in the cards??
I expect at least 4 to leave if Pitino stays (Carr, Gach, Johnson and at least one of Freeman/Mitchell). Probably 6-7 with a new coach as Pitino and Robbins will likely have a lot of offers.

I think more players would stay than people think.

This deserves it's own thread. I just don't see where Gach would go at this point. Yes he has been bad, but he wants to be close to home. I think he stays regardless, as does Gabe, unless Gabe has a dream school

I mean I agree but I think Gach thinks he's going to make money playing pro some place and playing 5 min a game here does him nothing

He may transfer again. But there's no chance he stays, IMO.

Gach strikes me as a player who needs the ball in his hands more to thrive. I think the Carr hero ball and stagnant offense has really destroyed his confidence. If Carr stays he will transfer, if Carr leaves it likely depends on the coaching situation.

That's a good point. Big 10 exposed him? Just a weird situation all around to leave utah, come here, then to transfer to a lesser conference then the pac 12

I maintain.

1. Beilein. Maybe a long shot, but you have to take a swing at him.

2. Musselman Ditto.

3. Craig Smith

4. Medved

5. Dutcher

You should get one of those 5. If not, Grant/Miles etc.

I just don't see how Joerger or Saunders straight from the NBA is a good idea. Assuming they can recruit is too big of a gamble.
You don’t think the “I made D Lo become horrible but I’ll turn you into an NBA player” will work?

Thank you. Saunders is a terrible coach, he sometimes makes Pitino look good
It’s really funny that people who don’t like Pitino like Saunders.

They are pretty similar career trajectories but Pitino had more experience to deserve the jobs he has gotten and has had more success at the head jobs he has gotten

I'm sorry.

Saunders is the only person on my DO NOT WANT list.

Everytime coaching changes get made people talk about the mass exodus of transfers thats gonna happen but it never does. There would probably be some transfers but itll be less than people think.

Please don’t restrict your candidate pool to guys with Minnesota connections or a certain skin color, gender, or whatever. If the ultimate hire is a black/white man/woman from St. Paul/Orlando.....great as long as that is the best candidate available.

And please not Ryan Saunders.

Zero chance Ryan Saunders is the next Gophers coach. And we don't want to hire him with all the candidates out there that will want this job.

Exactly---Saunders brings nothing to the table. The guy can barely string two sentences together.

The difficulty with hiring a black coach right now is that if you prioritize success as a head coach at the college level, the pickings are very slim. All of the best coaches in the Missouri Valley and Mountain West are white guys right now. Then you have Wes Miller, Mike Rhoades, John Becker..also all white guys. I read a stat that the number of black head coaches in D1 was down to like 24%. If the bottom and the middle of the food chain is not hiring black coaches, it makes it difficult for the power 5 schools at the top to make those hires. If you look at the B1G right now, the only black head coach is Juwan Howard and he was hired as an NBA assistant with no college head coaching experience.

Now Howard has Michigan poised to be a B1G power for a long time, so obviously you can go this way. I am just saying if the AD has success as a head coach in college basketball at/near the top of his qualifications list, the number of black head coaches available is small due to hiring practices elsewhere. I'd be intrigued by John Thompson III if he wanted to get back in the college game, by Sam Cassell who's paid his dues similar to Juwan Howard as an NBA assistant, obviously I'd take a shot at Ed Cooley to see if he's interested and Anthony Grant as well.

He seems to have a way of reaching people.
Not only that, he has the knowledge base to back it up. When things aren't going well, he makes adjustments. Pitino? Not so much.

Why do so many people care about people having connections to Minnesota ? I could care less where people come from, what color they are.

Yeah, I agree completely. I think there is an assumption anybody that leaves here would love to come back. For some, greener pastures might be elsewhere. This is a tough job, as is evidenced by the records of the last three that have held this job. Find a basketball coach that wins and the rest will take care of itself. Don’t try to win the press conference. It doesn’t need to be a Minnesota here. i.e. Fleck/Haskins

I know I've been part of the Minnesota connection game, but I would think Medved and Smith (regardless of being from MN) have got to be hot names nationally for guys that could jump into the Power 5 anywhere. It just makes sense that they would be more likely to take the job at MN because they're from here.

I can't lie I also just love Minnesotans and would love to cheer for a Minnesotan returning home and having success in the home state. But if it's somebody from elsewhere and they come in, do a great job, and want to stay here, that's great.

so Much depends how what coach comes here....
Carr and curry are 100% gone either way.

Johnson is probably close to 100% as well. Although I would love to see him come back.

Robbins and Maschburn. Again depends on who they bring in. But I think for both these guys, unless they just don’t feel like they will click with the new hire, it will be hard for either of them to walk away from starting spots for a big ten teams. So as long as we make the right hire I think they both stay.

Gach I just don’t think will have a lot of options for himself unless he transfers down. but I would put him as gone roght now.

Ihnen, tre, and gabe are all back.

Freeman and Mitchell.I think both of these guys are back as well. Although I could see freeman transferring closer to home and looking for more minutes.

Recruits.
Phouto is gone
Thompson....assuming the next coach honors the offer. Will stay committed
