Doogie: "Don't sleep on the possibility of Annexstad still entering the quarterback mix. It's not a stone cold lock that this is Tanner Morgan's job."

I do not understand how you do not have depth in a P5 program when you are getting paid millions of dollars for five years to recruit players? So, after five years you have to go out and pick a bunch of kids off the shelf because your recruits did not pan out?

Your moniker is so very fitting.

You can ask the same questions of the Vikings.

Good point, college gets around 25 scholarships plus walk on players per year. The Pros, depending on their record might receive a few draft spots per year. There are like 25,000 players FBS/FCS. There are around 2,000 Professional players, with the average career of 2.5 years. There are around 1 million HS players.

Sounds like barring really bad play or an injury, Morgan will be the guy to start the year at QB. That being said, your chances of having a bad game and getting injured is probably best in the opener against THE Ohio State Buckeyes.

It’s good for the soul to admit when you don’t understand things.

How many of you are like myself and loving the fact that we had a 11-2 season QB who is returning for his 3rd season as a starter. We have a backup who beat him out as a freshman and 3 QB's who all could be top 3 Gopher QB's of the last 40 years if they got to play.

The reality is we all have no idea what 2021 will bring our way. It seems logical to assume Morgan will start and a great QB will be behind him. However, to think that Fleck would not put someone else in if he is convinced he could do better is also logical. Now writing 4 pages on a controversy that may or may not exist (2 post are mine) is not all that logical. Thanks Covid.

Chuck Year 2020 as an anomaly. The O-line wasn't quite what it was with people opting out or have injuries. I think we will be okay at QB.

The shining star on Offense was Mo. The WR Corp without Bateman and Johnson was a different animal. Boye Mafe impressed me at times on Defense. It is a question of how quickly the team can adjust with the new combos of personnel in both Offense and Defense. The extra year of eligibility helps. We have quality transfers.

My big concern is the Defensive Secondary. Who will emerge? Do we have someone to make up for the lost of Antoine Winfield Jr and Chris Williamson? It's show me the money time for these guys.
So Gopher fans should "chuck 2020" because the results were bad? Every team in the country had the same challenges. My feeling is that Morgan was exposed because he didn't have the safety net he had in 2019. Morgan regressed by any measure. Gopher fans just need him to not suck in 2021.

Morgan's job. He is the man. He is a leader. He is a man of faith. He is rock steady.

Doogie is an idiot, always has been

However...

No reason this shouldn't be a wide open competition this spring and fall. By August, Morgan's 2019 success will be almost 2 years previous, almost ancient history. Guys from 18-23 grow and mature and develop at a lot of different rates, who knows where Morgan and ZA and the others will be through spring ball and heading into fall camp.

Plenty of factors went into Morgan struggling a little bit in 2020, but the struggles were there nonetheless. This will be the first spring ball for Mike Sanford and this group of QB's (as both the OC and the QB coach). He doesn't have Morgan's success from 2019 impacting his assessment one way or the other. His impression of the QB room is based on the f'd up fall situation and an abbreviated 2020 season.

In short, Sanford is going to go with the QB that he feels is best able to run the offense he's going to roll out there and that could be different than what Kirk C wanted. For sure, Morgan is the most likely started against tOSU, but I would probably agree it's not a lead pipe cinch.

I was hoping this take progressed to twitter so I could hear Doogie try and defend this hottake, but I guess I can't get everything I want.

Sometimes I wonder if you legit don't get things or are just really committed to a bit but regardless....

Reasons teams don't have depth:
1. Players don't pan out or quit football
2. Players transfer
3. Players get injured
4. Players leave early for the NFL
5. Coaching change leads to a bridge class that might be weaker than others (2017)
Lots of different things can factor into a team not having depth.

You seem to have a lot of issues with bringing in transfers to add depth or fill holes. We are not the only team in the country that does this. Teams have been bringing in JC guys for years and in recent years the transfer portal has exploded as another way to bolster your roster.

I would say our overall depth heading into Fleck's 5th year looks way better than it did heading into Kill's. And I see no issues what-so-ever with bringing in transfers to bolster the roster.

You don't chuck 2020 you just don't over react to it. Nothing about 2020 was normal. And yeah, Morgan regressed some from 2019 but there are many legit reasons that could have played a part in that. And even at his regressed level he was still better than most of the QBs we have had here in the past 50+ years.

Morgan would be the first to admit he needs to play better overall in 2021. Hopefully a more traditional off season will set Morgan and the rest of the team up to hit the ground running in 2021.

I feel like some are acting like Morgan fell off the face of the Earth in 2020, he wasn't as good as 2019 but he wasn't terrible either. And he got very little help from the defense which put the offense in a lot of tough spots.

On Morgan, in 2020 it just liked his timing was off for some reason. those hard inside slants that were thrown almost perfectly in 2019 just weren't as crisp or accurate. Is that on the QB, the WR or the OL?
could be all three. the deep ball also was not on target as often - which could have a lot to do with the WR's running the routes.

And, when plays break down, Morgan either can not or will run take off and run for positive yards.
Is that because he lacks the athletic ability - or because the coaches are telling him not to run? I don't know.

All I know is that I would like to see what Annexstad could do running the 1st-team offense, while healthy, and being allowed to use the whole playbook - not coming in late in a blow-out to hand the ball off.

Huh? Every team lost guys to sitting out. Were some in more important positions than others? Sure.

But how coaching staffs adjusted was important too. I'm sure Fleck thinks he could have done better.

I don't know what you're trying to say, it's the same, it's different from team to team?

However different teams lost different amounts. Some had to play games without their starting QB, some didn't. Some had entire position groups out all at once, some didn't. So yes, every team encountered COVID related challenges, but the severity of those challenges were not equivalent from team to team.

On top of that is teams that had a staff change in the off-season. Those teams lost out on critical time getting to know their new coach, and thus had extra difficulty getting used to the change which was reflected on the field. Teams that had no staff changes over the off-season didn't have to worry since they did not have a new system/wrinkles to learn.

Since you never seem to understand how it works with football. Have you ever thought about taking up rowing?

NDSU has depth, SJU has depth, the strong programs have depth. We have facilities and the north location limits us, so you better be strong on the local kids. Some of the best players have been local kids and they will stick around. Johnson, Decker, Coughlin. Decker was a 6'1" 180 pound kid out of Cold Spring. NDSU has made a career developing the over looked guys from small towns. That is where the secret sauce is, you need a local coach to figure that out.

NDSU does not have power 5 depth. We have depth relative to our current standing in the big ten.

SJU had a OL drafted this year, NDSU has had several guys drafted the last few years. All local guys.

I'm all for making this QB job a competition. The one thing I will say is that I can't imagine Morgan is the best QB athlete on the roster. To get a guy in there who can move the chains with his feet would be a nice mix once in a while. Whether that's Annexstad, Clark, Kramer, or throw in a wild cat that's quicker than Seth Green.

Easy answer might be to just have Tanner do a better job of using his feet but he hasn't seemed to be too comfortable with that. Either way I like Tanner.

At this point I am really at a loss for why you even follow the Gophers. You clearly want the U to be like an NDSU that takes on lower ranked local kids and that just isn't going to happen. NDSU and schools like that have had great success at their level and are capable of giving Big Ten teams a battle. But if you moved a team like NDSU to the Big Ten they would not have the same level of success.

You're kidding yourself if you truly believe the Gophers could be a factor in the Big Ten by recruiting the way you want them to. There is a reason why basically nobody agrees with you.

Well, maybe we should start looking at it my way, yes I am hard on the team because we all want the team to

Just because I am hard on them does not mean I do not like them. I believe my methods would work. I get tired of all the make believe and what ifs. I use local programs that have been successful for a long time because they have been successful. Look at the BB team last night, man.
