All Things P.J. Fleck Rumor Mill Thread - Listed as Candidate for Other Jobs

The only “legit” news sources I saw actually said the exact opposite. I saw a bunch of bloggers tweeting his name in speculation and I saw plugged in people like Chip Scoggins saying the opposite and that he has no interest
It was footballscoop via the pioneer press that I saw.

In P5 HC game, money is a measuring stick and a bargaining chip. I agree Fleck needs to have at least 8 regular season wins in 2021 to stay in the conversation for prominent P5 openings in the next round. The further he gets from 2019 and the 13 win WMU season without continuing winning at/above that 8 win or better level, the less his name will come up.
Yes, 8 wins is the minimum goal every year because it assures a winning B1G regular season.

Yep, as long as B1G plays more than eight conference games. It goes to 9 wins if B1G decides to go back to eight conference games.

You are right about the money, but you're leaving out how driven these types are to win. Maybe not realistic now, but quite sure P.J. wouldn't mind the spotlight that shines on Saban or Dabo because they're in the conversation for a national title every year. Will P.J. be satisfied to establish a program he's comfortable with like Ferentz or Fitzgerald or does he actually think he can get to the top of the mountain here? He might have an overabundance of self-confidence but I don't think he's delusional enough to think he's going to win a national championship despite what he has said. Among the disadvantages he's facing is the cultural one. Football simply doesn't have the same status in Minnesota than it does in Alabama, Texas, Georgia, etc. He's got an effective message, but even P.J. isn't enough of a salesman to make football all consuming for enough Minnesotans to make a difference.
Not everyone is chasing the money. Many people are perfectly content with a net worth of 25-50 million. The best ones in the money sports are hyper competitive . Several have giant annuities. There are basketball coaches who have turned down double the money in the NBA. Some chase the lure of the big job for a far better chance at the national title. Some like to try to build their own program and to see how far they can go.

Built, I'm replying to you because your post is the most recent in this thread and therefore the easiest to find. ...But this is really a response to the individual you responded to: Mulligan.

Can PJ win a national title here? Here's what i think. I think PJ can build a team that more years than not is what I would call "Wisconsin with a passing game." And I can think of a few years where I believe Wisconsin could have won a title if it had a passing game. So, yes, I think he can do it here.

I could elaborate, but that is the short version of my argument.

If I tweet out that he is interested in the Kansas OC job does he have to respond?

What comments on Twitter does he have to respond to?

only the ones you want a comment on?

he shouldn’t comment on anything unless he feels it is in his benefit to comment
We know it will be the first question at his next media availability.

Greder quoted them.
Greder quoted who?

Greder says Parker search firm thought Tennessee should target Fleck. He never said anything about fleck being intetested.

should fleck comment every time someone floats his name as a potential candidate?

Sure: that doesn’t mean he should comment.

Whoever asks him a question about a job he never pursued that is no longer available is wasting their question.

I'm not even really sure what you are arguing.
I said Fleck was vetted and it was reported. The source was footballscoop and was quoted by Greder. Those are 2 reliable sources.
Its up to PJ if he wants to comment. Seems weird that he would be vetted if there was no interest on his part.

People float names all the time. Doesn’t mean there isn’t mutual interest.

Search firm lists a few guys they couldn’t land. Whoops.

If fleck left to notre dame and a search firm said we should get coach X do they have to comment? No

seems weird that you see someone saying they should target him as proof of mutual interest

in the end you agree with me per the underlined section

You're not wrong about "legit" news sources not reporting it. Scoggins (and others) did say the opposite -- well after the news arose. But the reason I pay attention to this board and Twitter is because nowadays news like this is often "reported" first by non-"legit" sources. And yes, much of it is crap. Most of us common folk will never know how much interest Fleck had in this job. You can choose to believe he showed none. I believe he did.

I don’t know if he did or not. Nor does anyone outside of him and maybe a few select others. He may have had a ton of interest.

My point is he does not need to and should not comment publicly every time someone tweets something

I never once claimed he didnt have interest

Trust me. I'd certainly love to be wrong. Right now, I'm just glad he's our coach and already anticipating next year.

I'm not saying in this particular case PJ should have commented. I think it was getting close to that point though, especially if the reports kept coming out.

The risk is you can turn fans off if they think you're always job shopping. Clearly it doesn't bother you but it does bother some fans.

Not that big of a deal so I'm not sure we need to keep debating.

I'm not sure commenting does much. We've seen plenty of coaches comment and then leave. We've seen plenty of coaches not comment and stay. If I was representing PJ, I'd tell him never to comment. It doesn't really further anything for you and it might cost you a little change.

See the last two sentences of my post.
I did see legit news sources say he was vetted, but hard to say if that was because PJ was showing mutual interest.
I guess if some other team was telling the press that I was being vetted for the job and I knew there was no way I was taking the job, I might just say something about it.

I do think coaches like to let these rumors fly so that it helps them negotiate their next pay raise.
Fair, my fault on the interpretation. I thought you were suggesting that we were losing recruits over this. My mistake.

per Shooter:

There’s already buzz that if the Gophers footballteam wins eight games, which is probable, Virginia Tech could be coach P.J. Fleck’s next job at $6 million a year. Fleck, 40, signed through 2026 at $4.6 million a year, has a contract buyout of $4.5 million this year.

Go Gophers!!

We're going to win at least nine games, so per Shooter, we'll be fine and PJ won't be leaving.

- VT's current head coach is Justin Fuente, who got the ball rolling at Memphis in their recent streak of being yearly American Conf title contenders.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin_Fuente#Head_coaching_record

(the guy who replaced him , https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Norvell#Head_coaching_record , did even better and was hired by Florida State)

- point being, this could be a warning for Fleck. Why couldn't Fuente get it done? What would Fleck be able to do significantly better?

- VT is in a fairly rural part of the state, in the Appalachians. I'm sure it's very beautiful country, and all that.

- we know Fleck had a "list" of 10 (or so?) programs that, if they came knocking while he was at W Michigan, he and Heather were willing to move for, and Minnesota was one of them.

- we know Syracuse was not one of them, because Coyle tried to hire him there the year before and got Dino Babers instead

- so, point here is, why was Minnesota on "the list" but Syracuse wasn't? I could take a wild guess that being in or relatively close to a bigger market was something that was important to Fleck and Heather, and if so, that would seem to rule out VT as well. Of course, that would not be the only factor, I'm sure.

- why would it be "easier" for Fleck to win a national title at VT, given the current makeup/state of the ACC, and particularly when they switch away from divisions? The ACC has been the main proponent of going divisionless among the P5, and will do so just as soon as the rules allow them to pick their teams for the conf champ game every year.

- obviously VT was a national contender, back in the late 90's ...... but so were Nebraska, Tennessee, and Miami back then.

- times have changed, and all four of these programs (and even arguably Florida State) have fallen so far behind and out of the that "elite" top group, it may be impossible for them to climb back in.

- their "sales pitch" to Fleck will be something like "you have the chance to do here (at VT) what Dabo did at Clemson ... we have the fanbase and the money to pull that off, if we just get the right coach, culture, etc."

- I don't know if I buy that, myself, but of course what actually matters is if Fleck buys that

- Personally, I don't think it would be "easier" to turn VT into a CFP contender than it would Minnesota. I think both would be fairly equal challenges, at this point, and given the obstacles and competitive makeup of both confs.

- lastly, I don't see why that kind of money will matter. Is $4.5M on Lake Minnetonka, with Twin Cities amenities, that much "worse" than $6M out in the rural Virginia mountains? Even if they offered him $10M a year .... so what? At what point is it about the money, vs. about the ability to build a program into a national title contender? I think the latter will matter much more to Fleck.

Should he comment?

Money or feeling valued (which for many people equates to money) is important to a LOT of people. I think you are underestimating how important money is to most people. That said, who knows how Fleck feels about it.

My opinion is that your argument here would have a lot more sway if we were talking about going from say $1.5M to $6M.

But how more "valued" does he feel going from $4.5M to $6M.

As you rightly say, it's just my personal feeling which may be not at all how Fleck (or most others) feel.

The way things are going, players are going to able to sign sponsorship deals with companies. That is the future, according to recent Supreme Court ruling. The twin cities has a high concentration of corporations. So if you're a player, you have a better chance of lining up a sponsorship deal in the cities than 90% or more of the other colleges and universities in the country. I'm pretty sure that fleck is aware of this emerge opportunity, and willuse this competitive advantage to bring higher quality athletes. Try and match that vaTech

Pretty out there for speculation. Fuente currently has a better overall record and conference record at VT compared to Fleck at the U. Expect VT to win 8 games as well.

If so, it's years away and with your logic, Rutgers will become a powerhouse.
