All Things Chet Holmgren Recruitment Thread (Class of 2021, Gophers Have Offered)

Not sure anyone has ever seen a dude like Chet, so I get what you mean about Zion
Not quite like Chet in terms of skill spread. Handle smoothly at that height , deep range, reaction time, defensive reach. Obviously have seen better players but Chet is really fun to watch and plays with joy. I still think the Gophers are in it but have been told his values match Gonzaga and he wants a national title. Not sure what being a local legend means and what actually comes with it. Most great athletes want to be left alone and they think globally now. He could make it clear he is coming here, that would be great. The key for me is what has he told Few.

Exactly. No one is like Chet. He is amazing to watch, one of my favorite high school players of all time to see on the court.

As for college—Id love Chet to be a gopher but I’d possibly take 4 years of Treyton Thompson over one year of Chet, especially if Carr isn’t here for the 1 year.

Interesting. Either way, no matter what he decides it will not be a big deal to me. I do not let the decisions of teenagers bother me.

You’ve got to think if we finish towards the top of the BIG, and have a nice tourney run (Sweet 16 or better), we would be very enticing to Chet as he could slide in at the wing and get the shots Carr has been taking.

A real shot at a special team in Gopher history and legend status.
If he plays one year of college it's because he wants a title. He won't pick the Gophers for that.

Not inside info by any stretch but going back two years i was talking to two very successful coaches and i asked them why they were not interested in Chet, They said they were but that the said he was a lock for Gonzaga or Minnesota.

Agreed. Selfishly I want Chet as a gopher because he is enjoyable to watch play but I’m not going wish him injury or harass him on Twitter about it if he chooses to go elsewhere.

Assuming the Gophers don't have anyone go pro early, they would be in a top 5 of favorites for the national title with Chet. Now I don't think he'll go to the U but that's a lot of talent. 4 seniors (2 that would be among the best returning in the country) and the likely #1 overall pick would definitely get a good amount of buzz.

But if he goes to a team that is a heavy contender without him he just puts them over the top.

Things can change quickly but he isn't really considering anyone that would be a heavy favorite without him next year. He wouldn't be walking into a situation like that at Gonzaga, They've got three guys who seem set to make the jump to the NBA this year and with a run in March, Ayayi would likely be the 4th. I don't know how much weight he's putting in winning a national title but picking Gonzaga would point to him prioritizing his development above all else which...fair enough. Can't be mad at that

How about we just have Carr tell Chet he's staying and with our roster plus Chet, you'd have to imagine we'd be a top 10 team and B10 favorite next year

Can he graduate early and enroll now like Borowicz did for the ladies?

ESPN and NBA draft net have Chet going #1 in the 2022 nba draft and Carr going 43 and 54 in the same draft. Maybe Carr will get the same feedback again this year, so he'll stay another year? We will see

I have heard this as well, and it's why Kentucky and Duke never offered

He and his dad have said they want him to go somewhere where they have a guy who will play post so Chet can play the wing more...Robbins is looking pretty solid right now and should be back next year (assuming no injuries etc).

Chet wouldn't need to play 1 minute inside here.

Seen to many guys over the years who say the are a heavy lean to a school and then pic k another. Have seen those teams end up with their 2nd,3rd and 4th guy and go on to win conference titles and get to final 4's. Would love to see Chet here but will be thrilled no matter he goes. Robbins playing this way has to help. So much up in the air with Covid and his opportunities , were we ever his dream school, must have been up there for so many elite schools not offering. We may have to throw Michigan into the loop as Howard has a offer no one else can match. Beat Michigan !

If the Zags loose 4 guys to the NBA after this year they will be just as far from an NCAA title as the Gophers. Further, if Carr decided to return.

Just because they would have another cake walk through their conference to the NCAAs, doesn't make them title contenders.

What makes them title contenders is how good they are. They often play brutal non con schedules and do very well. They are really positioned well in recruiting. They are a National brand that takes years of winning to equal. Who knows who will be back. Timme has talked about playing three years.

Has Chet put on any weight since last season? He still looks dangerously skinny.

I think he has put on 15-20lbs. Honestly, if he never gained another pound he'd be fine. He is so devastatingly skilled offensively and arguably the best shot blocker I've ever seen. His timing and body control is absurd.

He'll turn more adult-like eventually, like Durant did.

There are certain kids that want to take a ride on the great ship and others that want to build it. I hope that Chet is of the type who wants to build something great and leave a legacy.

Great post. That is very close to part of the recruiting line Bennett used at UVA to get Guy, Hunter and Jerome and when i picked them to win it during their career. But to sell that well he had to convince Harris, Brogdon etc.. Chet definetly falls into the build it phase which is really cool because you do not have to win it all to be forever remembered as the guys that paved the way by winning the conference multiple times. Lets go Chet.

I had only seen a few of his highlights some time ago, but paid more attention to some additional video last night. His game actually reminds me a lot of Vlade Divac:

3 crystal balls to Gonzaga, reminds me of the time Zion was a lock to Clemson. Suggs also publicly recruiting Chet via his instagram story

See Chet announcing in near future on a cbs interview. Anyone know time of the interview?

If anyone hasn’t watched “once brothers” which was one of the original 30 for 30s would highly recommend.

In my opinion as a history nerd it is the best one

Cut the charades an announce Gonzaga is the team.

Doesn’t even make sense since he would never play with him anyways...
