2 updates from U of MN communications today, have not been on GH for more than 10 minutes today, so sorry if they have been posted. Westbrook news was already out, but here's the release anyways.

Hoffarber Named Academic All-Big Ten

The Big Ten Conference announced today that Gopher guard Blake Hoffarber (Minnetonka, Minn.) is amongst a list of players named Academic All-Big Ten. This is the second consecutive season he has received the honor.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letter winners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher.

Hoffarber, a finance major in the prestigious Carlson School of Management, finished this season as the team’s second-leading scorer with a career-high 10.0 points per game while also adding a career-high 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game.

He led the team in minutes played and set a Gopher single-season record for three-point field goals made with 85, including a school record eight treys against Northern Illinois on Dec. 15. Hoffarber led the country in three-point shooting for much of the season and finished third with a percentage of .467 (85-182).

One of the most accurate shooters in Gopher history, Hoffarber will enter his senior campaign with a career three-point field-goal percentage of .418 (200-478), the fourth highest all-time in Gold Country. His 200 career three-pointers are already the most in school history.

The Gophers wrapped up the 2009-10 with a loss to Xavier on Mar. 19 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. This was the second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance for the Gophers and the 16th overall appearance for a Tubby Smith-led team.

The Gophers finished 21-14 on the season, the 17th-straight season a Tubby Smith-led team reached the 20-win plateau. It is the longest active streak in the nation and the third-longest streak in NCAA history. Minnesota reached 20 total wins for just the 10th time in school history.

Westbrook Heading to Portsmouth Invitational

Minnesota senior guard Lawrence Westbrook was recently chosen to play in the 58th Annual Portsmouth Invitational Tournament April 7-10 at Churchland High School gymnasium in Portsmouth, Virginia. Westbrook is one of eight players on the Portsmouth Partnership roster and one of only three Big Ten players to be selected to play in the tournament (Michigan’s DeShawn Sims & Trevon Hughes from Wisconsin).

Westbrook finished his career at the University of Minnesota with 1,199 career points, tying him with Archie Clark for 20th all-time. He is one of only seven Gopher players to score 1,000 points and hit 100 three-pointers in a career.

Westbrook, whose 121 career games played is tied for ninth all-time, will go down as one of the best shooters to wear the Maroon & Gold. He leaves the “U” with 140 career three-pointers, which is sixth all-time, and a career three-point percentage of .379 (140-369), good for 10th all-time. He also holds a career free-throw percentage of .807, the third best in history, as well as the program’s eighth and ninth best single-season free-throw percentages of .837 (2009-10) and .833 (2008-09), respectively.

Each year for 57 years the P.I.T has invited 64 of the best college basketball players (seniors) from across the nation to participate in a four-day, twelve game tournament in front of representatives from every NBA team. Today scouts from the NBA and numerous international leagues have joined in on the annual April pilgrimage to Portsmouth. Over the years the P.I.T. has been a showcase for five of the 50 greatest players in NBA History (Rick Barry, Earl "The Pearl" Monroe, Dave Cowens, John Stockton, Scottie Pippen) and for many others who have gone on to NBA stardom.

Impressive numbers & he gets it done in the classroom. He will only be better next year if he's playing next to another great three point threat like Cory Joseph.

in Carlson the average in 3000 level courses is a B and in 4000 level the average is a B+, so all he has to be is close to average to get a 3.0.

What if he has a 3.6-3.8?

To be average or above average among the best of the University of Minnesota sounds alright to me.

But the fact that he's in Carlson as a Finance major with a 3.5-6 or whatever they always say it is on TV (instead of say Marketing or any of the "easier" majors) says something in of itself.

Can't remember the last men's basketball scholarship player that was in the Carlson School...at least not in the past few decades?

someone would take credit away from this...carlson is full of a bunch of nerds that try really hard at school, blake is an athlete that has a full-time commitment to take care of and he still is getting like a 3.5...that's impressive

I could be wrong but isn't RS3 supposedly in CSOM?

Any CSOM major isn't a walk in the park with a lot of the profs there.

This guy (Terry Tranter), Finance prof from CSOM, routinely gives out C's and D's just for the sake of trying to not inflate grades.

Yeah, what a bunch of losers. Trying hard in school - phhhttttt. Where's that going to get you? What are you going to do with all your money when you make a bunch because you are so smart and everything. Get your head of the books and get a life, Nerds.

I'm betting Blake will clean up in his post-Gophers career with his finance degree and all of the connections he will have in the Minneapolis area...his ESPY shot didn't hurt, either.

Westbrook's team won 104-85 last night. LW with 8 points on 4/7 shooting in 23 minutes of play. Balance scoring attack, all other 7 players on his team were in double figures -- Ben Uzoh leading the way with 16.

LW with 2 boards (both offensive), no assists/steals/blocks/turnovers.

Next up his squad takes on Roger Brown, who won 76-66 and includes a familiar foe, Raymar Morgan, who had 17 and 10 in his team's first game.

Interesting. Wasn't there some big article last week about how Raymar Morgan got snubbed and wasn't invited to this? Looks like he got the invite indeed.

There have been a few roster changes in the past week+ due to various reasons, mostly injuries.

Too bad DJ wasn't one of the alternate players added like Morgan. I would hope that he would've been one of the next players called had someone else ended up not playing.

Westbrook's team took third place tonight. LW with 8 points and 4 boards in 30 minutes (4/9 shooting, including 0/3 3FG).

For the three games, Westbrook averagedd 6.3 points and 2.3 rebounds and 1 assist in 23 minutes. Shot 37.5% from the field (9/24, 1/6 3FG).

Not the best few game for Westy. Anyone know why DJ is working out in Chi-town?
