UNBELIEVABLE - POST GAME RANT THREAD!!!!

I just want to know how is the linebacker core so slow? And how do we never get any push on the D line? Our talent is that much worse from last years? Maybe Fleck isn't built to recruit the Big 10 because you can thank Kill/Claeys for the recruits that made it to the NFL after last season (TJ, Winfield, Martin, Coughlin, Williamson)

You realize COVID is going on right now?
Having been hospitalized at the beginning of March when the pandemic was about to break, yes. My personal revelation was that now is the only time you have and if you want to have a future, then you make the hard decisions. I was a student season ticket holder during the Smokey Joe and Smiling Lou Holtz years. No fan of Golden Gopher football should suffer like that again, yet here we are.

Other sports are biting the dust, so this football program can raise itself back up, and this is what we get? Players with lead feet on defense and offensive coaches who run up the middle in spite of having an elite passing attack.

Where is gratitude for being able to play football during a pandemic? That gratitude should be shoveled into the internal desire to play the best game possible which includes doing all the things necessary to not catch COVID.

It might not be fair to have limitations on extraneous social interactions, an obsessive cleaning regimen and wearing a face mask, but that is the price in 2020 for getting to do what you say is your passion. That is the price of daily life today, regardless of what others say or try to getaway with. That is the price in the year 2020 to pursue your passion.

We have enough history with PJ to know that he's not the type of man who is going to rest until he comes up with an new acronym or two that will fix these problems that we saw tonight.

RTB, Go Gophers. Also, HYPRR.
How about FECES - feeble execution causes extra stress

Maybe a poop emoji for their helmets.

For our coordinators...SCAT - stupid calls are troubling

The thing I’m the most baffled at is the chicken sh^t play calling in the 4th quarter. The lack of passing. We lose 1 player from last years offense and we have this????

Amazing thing about that game is locksley coached like complete garbage too. Also MD was minus 2 on turnover and had tons of penalties. Really hard game to lose but we did.
I thought his punt in the first half on 4rth and 2, would actually cost his team the game. I thought once the Gophers took the lead, they'd keep scoring and never give it back. Maryland kept trying to hand the game over; punting for no reason on 4rth and 2, fumble into the end zone, penalties killing drives. I actually thought the D would step up one time and show us something... what an absolute horrible showing. I can honestly say; with all the horrendous Gophers D's of the past, this D after 2 weeks looks to be the worst. ALL LB's (that have played) have looked awful. The D line has been... well, why go there. The Defense has looked like a high school defense taking on college offenses. They've looked that bad.

The 2nd game in a row that Mo has been an absolute stud, and we're 0-2!! Figure that one out!

I'm not using COVID to defend the team performance.

I'm saying it's a ridiculous and insane idea that firing a coach after an 11-2 season is something you could do and land a better coach while the University is suffering from COVID and the financial stresses of that.

The person who suggests that is obviously ill-informed or just trying to be stupid.
I'm with ya

I don’t get the impression that PJ is all that involved in the offensive play calling, or the details of the defense on game day, or during the week. Some head coaches are offensive guys, some Defensive specialists . . . PJ pedigree is as psychological guru, the architect of Acronym. Blaming him for poor defense or bad play calling just seems to slide off, miss the mark, he’s a CEO. The only thing I can be sure of is that made the call on the last play of the game, and he had the defense in the wrong frame of mind to aggressively kick MD ass. He’ll go into the meeting rooms Monday and tell hs coaches to fix the scheme, while he works on the teams mental game.

But the "pipeline" should be better recruiting wise.

If you care to hear me out.

2015 class
2015 was a gap. That class had a ton of attrition for various reasons. (their junior / sr seasons were 2017-2018). 2017 was bad. 2018 got decent, finshing strong second half of season relying heavily on 2016 class.

2016 class
2016 class became experienced in 2017-2018 and provides us a strong 2019 (especially defensively). Very few redshirted.

2017 class was the Claeys / PJ mixed class. We got Tanner, Mo, and CAB. Grade an A offensively, but not so great defensively. This is a bit of a gap in defensive talent who would be redshirt Juniors or Seniors now.

2018 class - went heavier on defense and jury is out. Oliver Hurt. Rush and Sori-Marin are playing. Teague playing. Reigelsperger gone.

2019 class
Nubin, Cheney (Redshirt Freshman), Schad (Sr), several other LB's and D-Lineman who will probably see time soon.

2020 class
Thought to be a strong class defensively. Cody Lindenberg starting as a pure freshman

2021 class
appears to be a strong defensive class as well on D-line.

In year zero or year one, we knew we had a decent 2016 class, but new 2017 wasn't a great class on short notice, especially with D-line talent which usually should be red-shirted.

Looking at classes 2018-2021 they all seem to be pretty solid defensively upfront, and so far I think we can trust PJ's offensive recruiting where that shouldn't be a concern.
agree w your assessment. Talent is getting better but not really balanced throughout the roster so that any weaknesses or lack of depth is being exploited. It just has a feeling that we're starting over again, thus the year one reference.

Transitive property isn't always great but MD lost BY 42 TO NORTHWESTERN! Our defense is likely bottom 5 in all the country and im sure at 0-4, we have guys like Bateman, Morgan, Faalele and Dunlap go yep no reason to risk covid or injury this year and opt out.

I will say, everyone upset about Sanford, I mean we did score 28 on Michigan and 44 last night. But PJF needs to figure out a way to even kind of slow teams down or its going to get ugly (yes 0-1 wins ugly)

Was this our first Friday night game on ESPN since Michigan 2003? Let's never do that again...

Williamson was a Fleck recruit

My main point is, say what you want about the lack of seniors and redshirt juniors contributing on defense this year. In theory each class coming up defensively is shows more depth of quality.

Where year one, you could look at the 2016 class who started playing as sophomores, then you were looking to the 2017 Claeys / PJ class which was thrown together and not strong defensively.

Right now you look at 2018-2021. All classes have DL and LB talent that should be able to fill out and contribute, or give you a broad selection to contribute.

Defenders look slow when they are thinking too much.
A couple years ago a lot of our players looked slow on defense (against MD for example).

Rossi took over, simplified things, and suddenly the "we look slow" comments disappeared on this forum as the defense started shutting teams down. Same talent, and they did it with Winfield sidelined for the year.

Lindenberg does not appear slow.
Howden is not slow.
Coney Durr is not slow.
Terrell Smith is not slow.

Right. The D looks slow because they are playing lost, as if half the team has no clue what to do.

Lindenburg will probably end up a decent player by the time his career is over, but the fact that he is a starter as a true freshman is an indictment on PJs recruiting. We better hurry up and get some JUCO recruits for defense for next year.

Brewster chat.

PJ better be giving a hell of a Christmas present to his agent for getting that raise and extension done last year.

That was so aggravating. Also, is it too much to ask that we have a QB keeper mixed in every once in awhile?
That would have been a perfect call for the would be 2 point conversion. On to next week.

I think he already did...Gopher football is in QUICKSAND for 2020

Quiet
Underwhelming
Injuries
Covid
Kickers
Slow
And
No
Defense

Turns out the more we struggle, the more we sink

I don't know if it's an indictment yet.
We don't know if some of these others are COVID / injured / discipline reasons not playing.

We'll know in the next year or two however. I also think Braelen Oliver would be a starter if he were not injured, so that's not helping.
Whether he would be replacing #45 or #55 I'm not sure.

Rossi at least has history of producing a good D. Sanford?...
it's fascinating Sanford has continued to get jobs to me.

Had one good year at ND in 2015, then they sucked shit the next year.
6-7 and 3-9 at WKU
Stop at Utah State where it looked like Jordan Love regressed (32 TDs year prior to 20 and ints went from 6 to 17).

I would be astonished if he makes it through the season.

Mo was running great through 3 quarters. Then he hit a wall. 41 rushing attempts. The only other RB to get carries was Potts with 3. Good thing the season is short. Mo is going to get ridden into the ground. I’m not sure I disagree- I’m not sold on Potts or Wiley. Wiley has been rather poor on KO returns. And Potts has a short, awkward stride. He probably takes twice as many steps as Mo in the same distance. Look for it- once you see it you can’t unsee it.
Agree on Wiley thus far. Looks stiff and tentative
Potts seems to be a more shifty runner and obviously has a very different style than Mo. I mean he did have 45 yards on 3 carries yesterday and did fine vs Mich

No more Game Day in Minneapolis, no more national Prime Time games, no more matte yellow helmets with white face masks, no more extra points (always go for 2-point conversations), no more punts (always go for 4th downs), and unfortunately for us, no more winning Gophers.

What we did to Mo reminds me of what we did to Tellis Redmond in the Reddit (?) Bowl when we blew that game too
