College Football Will Be Postponed

Is it just possible the administrators are acting in the best interests of the players and the community?
Of course the decision is not being made by sports fans. That is one of the more bizarre comments made today.
Like the economy until the virus is controlled by wearing masks, avoiding crowds and that really means bars, and social distancing life including sports is going to be disrupted.
A vaccine is on the far horizon.
We cannot have both ways.
A glance at what is happening in Sturgis, SD is a perfect example of how really self indulgent, spoiled, stupid and entitled some in this country are.
We are not the greatest generation.
WHy are we not closing walmart and home depot then? no one compains about the over crowding of those stores???

Why? Because you believe that the pandemic is based off of actual truth and facts? It is a political reach. That is all. Forced by the hands of the more powerful.
Do you really think nobody is dying? Do really think people aren't getting terribly sick? Even if the majority of infected college kids getting it are asymptomatic they would still have to sit out. and If one player ends up with serious damages to their heart/lungs the program will be held liable and sued to oblivion. The politicizing of a virus idea is moronic and you should be embarrassed how ideologically partisan you have become.

More people die from heart disease but we dont do anything about the obesity issue in our country? Why is this so important all of a sudden to get a vaccine.

No one thinks its concerning that we are not allowed to do basically anything at this point? No one thinks there is an overreach of government? Can we no longer make decisions for ourselves? If you are scared stay home. If not be free to go about your life. Is that too difficult.

The Big Ten just released the schedule and allowed camp to start Friday. Why do that and then just push for canceling the season a few days later? Nothing has really changed in the past few days.

We don't know that. Undoubtedly, the presidents and boards are in touch with players, parents, coaches and medical professionals much more closely than a bunch of fans who get their info largely second hand. And certainly, if reports are true, I'd be interested in hearing the answer to this question.

Even in releasing the schedule, Big 10 warned of the possibility of not having a fall season, which tells me the uncertainty regarding current circumstances was still the primary concern. With that being the case, they had to release a schedule to cover their their bases imo. Obviously, they were holding out hope to have the season start on-time. But I always considered the schedule and preparations more aspirational than anything else given the level of uncertainty we're facing.

If the presidents suddenly change course, I'll obviously support it. But if they decide this is the proper course, I won't criticize them for one reason: I don't know enough. And the truth is, neither does anyone else. That's a scary proposition when it comes to matters of public health and potential liability.

Heart disease is not a highly contagious viral infection... Lining up across from on another and breathing into each others faces and piling up on the running back are things people should not do during a pandemic.

Oh people are doing plenty. Many are just not going to work. But everyday looks like Saturday at parks and shopping centers. Private gatherings have never been so big. Bars were packed with young people last weekend.

Anyone who thinks cancelling (or postponing) the season will result in even ONE fewer case is a clueless fool and has no idea what is going on around them.

48 children have died in the US from COVID since February 2, most with severe co-morbidities. over 11,000 children have died from all causes. What are we doing? Certainly not operating our of a knowledge of statistics.

I am pretty middle of the road on the Covid issue but if you think this is government control and authoritarianism you should read some books

I tend to agree with this.

I know why they’re canceling.
It is interesting that people claiming “freedom” are against canceling. Canceling actually allows individuals to gather if they want to and limiting the season or postponing it means no players will be pressured to play when they have doubts. Even if given the opt out...it is probably frowned upon at most schools.

I actually am probably the rare person who thinks it is smart to cancel but it doesn’t actually help prevent the spread of the disease at all

I guess you don't even realize the irony of your rant, do you?

Are college athletic conferences free to make decisions for themselves? Or should they be forced to hold the season?

Do we have the Trump administration lock up any players who won't play?

Good lord, diet and lifestyle is the biggest killer in the United States. But we let government subsidize horrible food to keep us sick and fat. Why? Money is why. Just like pushing a vaccine that has patents from government officials is a money maker.

The best thing everyone can do to stay healthy....get outside, become immune superstars by being exposed to lots of stuff, eat whole foods, excersize and be active. THis is exactly what the government is saying not to do (stay indoors, dont socialize, dont go to gyms, on and on.

Personally, other than remembering to wear a mask when I hit the store, or going to baseball games, the safety protocals haven't affected me a great deal at all. The thing is, for me, it's not a huge concern for me that I might catch it, get really sick or die. It's that I might catch it, spend 2 weeks possibly spreading it to somebody else with-out realizing it, who spreads it to 4 others, who spread it to 10 others and one of those people IS seriously affected. And unlike most other flu's, for which there are vaccines that will lessen the chance that you get it or are seriously affected, there is no vaccine at all for this. I liken this to covering your mouth when you cough. Does it guarantee you won't spread your germs? Probably not. Will it lessen the amount and distance those germs travel? Likely, so why not take the precautions.

I don’t expect college athletes to demonstrate perfect reasoning, but I read part of their argument as coming from a place of on-campus privilege. Lawrence, below, is saying they want to play because they are safer in their team bubbles than they would be otherwise. This safety requires that state/institutional resources be focused on them, despite the reality that this season may be operated at a loss (feel free to fact check finances, but I’ll assuming loss of ticket sales will hurt). I know some, if not many, of these athletes may face tough situations in their home communities, I just don’t think that football offers a good enough reason to be spared the reality of this pandemic that the rest of the US is facing.

I don’t blame them for wanting to be in the bubble, but it’s not a justification of the means.

Can you get AIDS from me? HOw about a cold? STDS?

Are there lockdowns for these? yet they are around every year.
Heart disease, can I get heart disease from you?

If the season IS moved to Spring, will we get our original, including non-conference schedule back?

It's probably for the best.

You can never be too safe.

If you are administrators for a college, I don't see how you can turn a blind eye to the risk involved.

Our governor projected like a hundred thousand deaths thanks to the help of U of M's own Osterholm.
How can you have someone like Osterholm and still proceed with playing a high contract sport?

If the season IS moved to Spring, will we get our original, including non-conference schedule back?

I don't think you can assume anything will be the same.

I haven’t seen a discussion on playing spring football schedule, and then again in the fall of 2021? Is this really feasible?
No. That's a terrible idea to try to condense two seasons into a time span of just over half of a year. I would think the players and coaches would be even more upset about that than the issue of playing this fall.
