All Things Kerwin Walton Recruitment Thread (Class of 2020)

Kerwin on quoting why he likes Roy Williams, coach of the University of Notorious Cheaters

Just the fact that he’s really honest and he’s seen a lot of legends and seen a lot of guys come through his program and succeed so he knows what it takes just to be successful and play at the highest level, so that’s probably the biggest thing to take away from him,” Walton said of UNC's head coach.

No. But on a consistent basis, we're not going to get 4 star, top 100 guys elsewhere if we can't get top 100, 4 star MN guys to stay here. On any given player, it's always understandable, but his batting average is simply too low. The long-term recipe for success here is to keep at least 1-2 of the top 5 guys in MN each year. I'm not saying it can't be done without that, but it will be much harder.
Why can others that miss on their in state 4 star kids, get them from all over ?

Great choice, happy for him and look forward to him hooping for Roy. Looks like he will be a player.

Nice situation for him at UNC. One of 5-6 guys fighting for two spots....
Well it was not enough to stay home. He certainly did not think he was the best coach that offered. I think that the recruitment of Walton was done as well as it could be. That record screams at so many of these kids. So many mention winning.
That is your opinion, but he didn't mention anything about the "best coaching". Walton talked about playing on the biggest stage, history, and all of the legends that have passed through UNC. The talent in the recruiting class.. etc..

My kid is a D1 athlete and unless you have experienced how difficult this decision is you should be careful to judge the Waltons.

My kids coach has integrity and has done ? percent of what he said he was going to do.
My other child’s college coach followed thru on nothing. Kids need to take the time to do the due diligence to know what they are getting into. The good coach had a trail of good experiences with players and the bad coach had a trail of bad experiences with players. We don’t have any more children to commit, but I could write a book on what type of coach you don’t want to play for.

Coffey hasn’t helped Pitino.

True. Seems obvious to me that it is a given that Williams is a better coach. If Pitino blew him away as a brilliant visionary that had tremendous success that would possibly kept him here. You must think Richard is a fantastic coach. That is ok, that is your opinion.

Williams is one of best coaches.

If it was just coach, mn wouldn’t have been in running. No one is debating that.

We were not in it because of our coaching, we were in it because of hometown and family. That is ok, in the end he did not want to be here, we found someone who did. Best thoughts and hopes for Walton to realize all his dreams.

I understand this. There were numerous things for each recruit, by accounts I’ve seen we were runner up...but that’s speculation

There could’ve been things that swayed him to UNC beyond Williams. UNC is blue blood, we are not, we gave it our best. We could have tony Bennett, and he may still have chosen UNC.

It’s far too easy to say, welp he didn’t like pitino, he went elsewhere

Night and day difference between here an North Carolina, when the scandal broke out here the general consensus was that Clem could not be fired quick enough, it would not have been tolerated if what happened at North Carolina happened here, I'm guessing the coach and athletic director would be gone for sure and probably the University President, so no I hope Minnesota never gets off the high horse.

Completely agree.

Roy Williams did his usual "aw shucks, I knew nothing about this" spiel when the scandal broke and the Carolina faithful swallowed it up like gospel. Then they went out of their way to vilify the whistleblowers, most notably Rashad McCants (whom they had loved previously).

The underlying message was that they were the true true victims of some sort of jealous conspiracy.

None of that BS would have flown here (or at the very least, would have been shouted down by a lot of folks in Minnesota).

So no, I don't feel bad at all about judging North Carolina and their sham "Carolina Way" that they peddled for all those years.

The only good thing that came out of it was them dropping the phony "we do it the right way" BS they had peddled to anyone who would listen.

Haven't heard much about that nonsense since the scandal broke thankfully.

They are scum. Roy sells the Huck Finn thing and knows how to sell UNC. That history, the Jordan logo itself is powerful, over 21,000 at home games, the largest conference games in the country, A national following, a regional cult that lives college hoops. I get why kids buy it. They live in the now. Plus our kids, all kids that are 18 have lived from 11 years old until now in mediocrity. Would love it if the cheaters were all brought down and why i love it when the clean programs beat them.

Agreed. The coach means everything to my kid and deciding a d1 school. I wanted my kid to stay close to home but the coach won.

How would you know? Maybe Walton roping us two hours before Kier committing hurt our chances, ever think about that? Only so much you can blame the guy. If Walton wants to be a Tarheel then not much anyone can do.
OK Mrs Pitino.

They are awfully fun to watch play basketball though. They play an up-and-down brand of ball, bludgeon teams on the glass and actually win (this past season notwithstanding) a lot.

I look forward to them being one of the better teams in the country again.

What they do on the court is impressive. For some of us how they got there stinks. To each their own.

This. By all accounts, Walton sounds like a good kid. Too bad he fell for old Roy’s used car sales pitch to play for Scum U. Yes, there are many advantages they have over us. Doesn’t change the amount of slime and scum at that program.

I remember being in Puerto Rico for the preseason tip off when we beat N C and then WV to win the tournament. The NC fans said we were so lucky to have Tubby Smith as a coach because Williams was so terrible!!! Their really hated Roy!! Crazy how things change.

It amazes me how many d1 kids have moms and/or dads on this board. LOL Guess what? I had one too. If my kid wanted to play for a cheater or a cheating program, I would have stepped in and said NO WAY!! I really have zero respect for the Walton family after this fiasco. As far as I am concerned based on previous internet gossip and 2nd hand info, Mr. Walton won out and took the money and ran. And to string MN and Pitino along is complete BS.

How can you know that the strong desire to stay home was not off set by what he sees as failure in aspects of the program.

If it's a failure like that in the program, then why act like the gophers have a chance and put them in your top teams.

That's the part that I can't stand about guys like this. They visit the gopher games and sit behind the bench over and over and over and over. Then they put you in the top 5, knowing they will never pick the gophers.

I wish they could nut up and eliminate them early.

By the way, I hope he rides the pine at NC his entire career. Does this make me bad?

Mr. Hurt, I can't place the coaches here. Which coach is the one who did 100 percent of what he said?

The one who kept your kid on scholarship for four years when he couldn't play at a big 10 level?

or the coach who couldn't get your son to the NBA as one and done(top 5 pick) as you continually told many in Rochester was going to happen. By the way, not even a sniff.

I'm just curious which coach is which!

Damn Goldteam I think you just put an end to Mr. Hurts time on GopherHole.

This is spot on. Let’s all see how much playing time he gets this upcoming season with the new recruits coming in. I think is going to be a up and down season for the one & done.
