Start up Spring Practice now

Players are not at risk of dying from corona its people with underlying health issues and the older population. Its not about money its about the kids playing the game they love, there has to be a season. What needs to be decided in the upcoming months is if fans are allowd to attend or not

Players are at a low risk of dying from corona but younger people are not immune.

We all want a season but those decisions don't need to be made right now. Football still has time to work with.

Everyone wants normalcy to return (in spite of what the hard core political types will say on each side of the isle since they assume the other side is pure evil and hell-bent on the destruction of the planet).

But given where we are at right now it would be stupid to just "flip the switch" and reopen everything the way some more extreme types think we should.

Sending football players back to start practicing when Universities as a whole are still closed just doesn't make sense.

If we would just stop paying people to stay home this would all self resolve in less than a week. Who at the U would not return to work if not being paid? Profs, football players, coaches, university president?

As a practical note, I wonder about those 15 spring practices (I think we got 2 or 3 in before it was called off?) Will they just fade into the abyss of cv19, or might we somehow recoup them?

If students were allowed to return in, say, early June ... would you try to hold 10-11 practices then?
All classes are online only at least through the Summer sessions.

THIS VIRUS IS NO MORE LETHAL THAN A TYPICAL FLU, ONLY MORE CONTAGIOUS. IT RACES THROUGH THE POPULATION, INFECTING HUGE NUMBERS WHO NEVER HAVE SYMPTOMS.

Here's the whole briefing directly from ABC News KERO Bakersfield.
--Edit: Ugh, has been removed. I'm a lefty at Boston Scientific and that's not a good look, YouTube.

Here's a synopsis from today.

The doctors are Dr. Dan Erickson and Dr. Artin Massihi of Accelerated Urgent Care in Bakersfield. They are not saying "it is no more lethal than a typical flu". They are simply saying "millions of cases, very small amount of death" and how an infection fatality rate of 0.03% to 0.05% is similiar to flu's case fatality rate of 0.01%. There are indeed studies possibly enforcing a large undercount of coronavirus infections. Yes, that would be good thing. However, both Erickson and Massihi supported the lock down moves thus far. Both of them do not encourage just lifting everything and come what may. They encourage a cautious opening with common sense, vaccines (as well as flu shots), and keeping immunocompromised people safe.

They are just two doctors who have opinions. As with all things in science, let's collect more data. Lots of studies underway and peer reviews are ideal. On the whole, things are looking more positive than a month ago, but again, patience. We'll get football soon enough.

Everything in life has risk, everyday we get in our cars risking our lives. Death from football related injuries probably has just as high of odds of killing a healthy college athlete as corona. If you do not feel safe dont take the minimal risk of dying from corona and stay in your house. We cannot live in quarantine forever by August it has to be done.

Amazingly, some fans still think we may not have a football season this year in spite of all the hundreds of millions of dollars that would cost us, the industry, the states, etc. Here is another piece of hard evidence that football will be played this fall. As you know the death rates in Europe have been much higher than here and they have had those rates longer than we have. Yet their soccer teams are returning to training. If they can and will, we can and will.

I know, I can’t believe people think the Olympics and Euro 2020 will be canceled. Way too much money in both of those things for them to be canceled.

That is utterly false. Death rates have been falling rapidly across western Europe over the past ten days. Germany, a country of over 80 million people is down well below Minnesota's (less than six million people) for two weeks now. France, Spain, Italy, etc., all sharply down. NYC is sharply down.
It is utterly true. The article wasn't about the last 10 days; it was referencing studies of the period from roughly March 1 to April 10. By death rate, they meant the total number of people who died, from all causes, in the various cities and countries noted. They wanted to get at the real impact and away from the issues of over/undercounting cause of death, which I personally think is the smart way to think about it. There's no denying that far more people died in March and early April than would normally be observed. Data didn't include the last 10 days, though. Two entirely different topics.

Pretty sure they are referring to overall death rates, not specific to the virus. The virus has led to spikes in the overall death rate similar to the one below. Then again, I am a genius who dabbles in brain surgery and rocket science for fun.

No one is suggesting we should be in quarantine forever. But bringing players back now would be irresponsible and unnecessary.

The hot spots are cruise ships, aircraft carriers, pork plants with workers with high density living arrangements, urban areas with subways, nursing homes. A tiny percentage of the healthy in these situations died.

I'm curious what makes folks who think the virus is not different than the flu decide that with all the restrictions in place .... college football is the one that needs to be lifted.

If this whole thing is not a big deal, or less a big deal or whatever ... they're ok with everything else ... but college football is what should start up?

Of all the weird places to make a stand...

Football players are the first population that should go back to normal. They are young and healthy, none have asthma, etc.

What are you talking about? I'm sure nearly everyone wants a return to normalcy, that has nothing to do with what I said, work on your reading comprehension.

I comprehended exactly what you were saying, good Gopher football news is just "bad" to you because your bias is that all news needs to be bad for the next six months. Do you comprehend that in yourself? I just posted an article from the fairly reliable and left wing BBC that clearly indicates we will have a Gopher football season. To me, that is very good Gopher football news. But to you, it is politcal and bad.

BECAUSE THE YOUNG AND HEALTHY ARE NOT AT RISK. LOOK AT THE NUMBERS.

Who has said that? I thought this was a Gopher, college football site. I have also vigorously argued on the off topic board that there is no need for the lockdown of young healthy people under age 60. So has everyone else who is good with having regular college football in the fall.

How do you know none of them have asthma?

To borrow a line from Allen Iverson, we're talking about practice. Spring ball is cancelled and it should remain that way because it's not that important. Then you've got the issue of the players being scattered all over the country.

Then why bring it up in this thread if it is not about COVID 19?

@GophersInIowa: The asthmatic footballs players should stay sheltered in place. Healthly individuals should take no more precautions than they did in previous bad flu seasons. But...
...I know a lot of people who are getting paid well to sit around and they don't want this to end.

Bingo...There is zero reason to rush athletes back by May 1st or whatever arbitrary date some want to set.

We death percentage is much lower then 3 percent because most people who are getting tested are having severe symptoms. Many people get a cold and dont even know its corona and dont get tested.
You should also consider those that died from the virus that were not counted. Considering the virus is now linked to deaths from blood clotting, heart failure, strokes, and more. New York City contributed about 3600 more deaths to their toll from those that died, were never tested, but had symptoms indicating they were highly likely to have had the virus.

Since our testing levels are very small, we may never know the actual number that have died. However, we do know that the coronavirus is highly contagious, can cause severe illness, and can overwhelm our health care system.

Any opening of our economy should be done in a measured manner so hot spots can be identified and adjusted to. Most of you live in Minnesota, which seems to be responding to the virus, and planning to open the economy in a responsible manner. I live in Washington state and we are about two weeks ahead of Minnesota with regards to being infected, and we seem to be opening up in a similar, responsible manner. Last week here, workers at manufacturers like Boeing went back to work. This is involves thousands of workers and is a big test to see if all the safety measures will work.

Stay safe!

So because they play a sport with an inherent injury risk it is ok to treat them differently then the general public and put them at higher risk of contracting the disease?.....

Not really sure I am following your line of thinking on this one as the two things don't really seem related.
How many Americans under 25 have died from Covid-19? Not many - it's a low risk for this demographic. A football player is much more likely to have long-term "health issues" by playing football.

I know, I can’t believe people think the Olympics and Euro 2020 will be canceled. Way too much money in both of those things for them to be canceled.

Bad examples. The Olymics were to have been a summer event (hint: Summer Olympics). While Euro 2020 is even a worse example in that the qualifying games were still being played and scheduled for March, April and even May, with the tournament was in to be in June. College football starts in September.

New York counts "probables" as COVID 19 deaths in their official COVID count. Totally subjective.

Players don't get paid so not sure why that's relevant here.

The difference you're not understanding is that people with the flu show symptoms. With Covid a young healthy individual can pass it on to many people without even knowing they ever had it. There's still too many unkowns for it to be worth it. My guess is many players wouldn't want to come back now anyways.

Then why bring it up in this thread if it is not about COVID 19?
Because it shows the affects of Covid? Unless you think the massive increase in deaths were caused by something else?

If we had more testing available, they could restrict contact to only non-infected football players and coaches, and create a sort of bubble for them. It would add to the cost, but it could be done.

Then why bring it up in this thread if it is not about COVID 19?
Holy smokes. Covid is contributing to the overall spike in deaths. Guessing I haven’t bumped into you at any brian surgery or rocket science conventions.
