Fleck realizes that you can fool most of the people some of the time, and Gophers fans nearly all of the time, so he has developed this strategy after the disappointment of defeat (admittedly, not required often in Year Two, following Zero and One):

He takes full responsibility, while simultaneously taking none of it.

Fleck knows that the reaction comes from the sound bite and not from the substance being offered. He even manages to get headlines and laudatory comments when issuing the “I take full responsibility’’ spin, even though it couldn’t be more insincere.

“Our band, our alumni, our fans: we heard you the entire time. And I apologize to our fans for not being able to get it done, because it falls on my shoulders 100%. Nobody else: not staff, not players – me. I did not get it done for our fans.”

Zero percent of mistakes are admitted, but it 100% falls on his shoulders. P.J. Fleck has established himself as both a big success and a disingenuous genius with the Gophers.

It’s all on me, but no mistakes are on me, no matter how apparent. Spectacular.

This seems like Reusse just doesn't really like how Fleck talks. I mean, he says Fleck doesn't take responsibility for the mistakes, but that doesn't seem like it's the case.

Bring up an issue like tackling, schemes, or game decisions, Fleck usually talks about how that can be improved. My guess is Fleck has a whole list of things he plans to work on with the team, but he doesn't have to break down every play with the media.

What does Reusse expect him to do, say "at Wednesday's practice, we should have done XY and Z so maybe this player could have done play No. 8 better" ? Fleck's coach speak isn't really all that different from most of his colleagues.
 


I probably figured out before my thirteenth birthday the life of a sports opinion columnist or radio jockey revolves around mirroring the mood of the audience and feeding into that hysteria. This is not at all unique to Minnesota and I heard it yesterday while listening to a Skor north podcast - they were excoriating PJF as a game day coach and the staff as Xs and Os newbies. Like it or not, that’s probably the overt or subconscious opinion of a majority of fans. PJF is really strong in some areas but perhaps has some work to do in others, along with the staff.

Pat took the loss harder than most of us.
 



Pat Reusse's continued success as a promoter of himself was on display in the Star Tribune today. Despite having no specific critiques of a sporting event, coaching strategy or on field performance Pat once again delivered his column on time with a repeat personal attack on someone he doesn't like.

Pat once again highlighted that there is no reason to offer new insight into a story when your personal animus towards someone can fill out paragraphs just fine. If the target of your vitriol dares to continue to have some success despite your previous bylines that's all the better as that keeps them around for future satire and if they ever stumble the pre-written columns on that occurrence can finally see the light of day. Spectacular
 

He claims Fleck disingenuously takes blame for the loss. Well is Fleck backhandedly blaming someone other than himself? Because I didn’t hear it at all. It’d be one thing for Fleck to say:
“this loss is on nobody but myself, I didn’t get it done. It’s not on the dropped balls. It’s not on Morgan’s crucial interception after we just recovered their fumble. It’s not on Faalele getting injured, mumbles *damn pussy get up and play some football* It’s all on me”.
Fleck doesn’t need to make pinpoint claims as to what makes the game his fault for losing exactly. what a stupid article
 





Pat is a master of click bait. He gets off on people reading and reacting negatively to his work.
 


He's a jealous, grumpy old man full of hate. My bet is that he was bullied as a little boy...so now he can take it out on those that he sees as superior. He's just a hateful spiteful old man.

He's pissed that the Gophers won ten games this year. He's pissed that Fleck wasn't the turkey last year after winning the Axe.

He's pissed that he has always been the turkey.
 


Reusse realizes that you can find the words to be critical of pretty much anything, especially if you're good enough with words. That's his privilege as someone with a byline, but fewer and fewer people want to read a one-trick pony reconstituting the same message over and over. His opinion is less and less relevant as time goes by, even when he's making a solid point. A dwindling number of people care. Why should they? Readers can get a whole lot more insight and information from bloggers and the more knowledgeable beat writers, and they can read the human stories of sports in The Athletic.

It still comes down to, people who can't do it write about it.
 

I have watched the Gophers for a very long time including Memorial Stadium and Fleck makes my teeth itch and his followers are a bit of a cult.

I've watched the Gophers for a very long time well back into Memorial Stadium years and have absolutely no problem with Coach Fleck.

Reusse's writing makes my teeth itch, and I no longer will click on anything he writes. He is simply being a dooshbag (no, he does not even deserve correct spelling).
 

Where are the people that show up every time there is a Reusse thread and tell us all that we just don't understand the real Reusse? They tell us he most certainly does not have some petty beef with the Gophers and suggest it is really the rest of us that misunderstand him. Consider me a simpleton, because all I see is a cranky columnist that has been beating the same drum for so long that it no longer matters what the team accomplishes. He's going to go that route regardless of how many wins are achieved or regardless of who is coaching the team.

He has made no secret about the fact that he can't stand Fleck so I am sure this has been a rough season for him. Now that the team has lost a few games he finally has a reason to spout his negative BS again without seeming like a complete fool to those that still enjoy reading his crap.
 

Only in Minnesota could such a subpar writer still exist after years of mediocrity, he was even WORSE on television.
 

Translation: "Please Please Please pay attention to me. I don't want to be irrelevant and the only way I can think to get the attention that I need is to throw a tantrum and start taking shots at people who will be mad. The gopherhole people have called me out for being a DB so I will start with them"

He just needs his diaper changed.

He likes to act the part of a typical leftist.... letting us know how much smarter he is than us deplorables, and how foolish we are for being taken in.... what he does not get is that we love the spectacle of Golden Gopher football regardless, and cannot be swayed.
