2018 Gopher Baseball

Gopher baseball hasn't made it beyond the top 16 teams college baseball for 36 years?

And here I thought our tolerance for Don Lucia mediocrity was bad...

???????????

3-7 with 18 RBI means there's gotta be some sac fly they aren't counting so that's a dumb stat, otherwise they're saying when he doesn't hit a GS he's 1-5 with 10 RBI

I can tell you know a lot about NCAA baseball.

Well that was a crazy inning with a couple hit bats men etc. Perhaps we'll get some breaks in our half.

Dang, I knew going into this series that Oregon State was as tough as any top team in the country, but I still thought we were going to put up more resistance and at least steal a game in this series.. oh well, this team shattered expectations with an excellent season.

Ahhhh, nothing like 4 hour baseball games.

Agree

Welp... it was fun watching Gopher baseball for the first time in awhile. Good game Gophers

Tough hop, but at least the U didn't look the other way to support a guy who rapes little girls.

Great season boys. Loved watching this team and getting a taste of big time college baseball. The seeding ultimately didn't work in our favor. Definitely a CWS caliber club. Oregon State just too good. See you next year.

It just hit me how much we are going to miss Vavra next year. That was one of the greatest single season hitting performances ever put on by a Gopher.

Fitting end to the game. That’s last pitch was over the inside of the right handed batters box.

Great season though. Was a lot of fun.

Was the college world series smaller/larger at one point during Anderson's reign?

Again, shouldn't coaches face scrutiny if they aren't making it close to a national championship every 5,10,15,20 years?

Hell of a season for the guys great run! Gonna lose a tremendous group in Alex Boxwell, Micah Coffey, Toby Hanson, Fred Manke, Luke Pettersen, Jackson Rose, Terrin Vavra, and Rob Fornasiere. Guys that have meant a lot to this program and really got it back to where it belongs. Had opportunities to win this game and just couldn't get it done. I understand why 14 kept Max on the mound as you want to either win it or lose it with your best guy on the mound. Jackson Rose came in and got the big out and I'm sure if him and Eli Wilson could do it again they'd go to the curveball on that 1-2 pitch to Rutschman as he was set up perfectly for it. Very disappointed in the homeplate umpire tonight. He was awful and it wasn't all the way around it was completely one sided. Absolutely embarrassing effort from the man behind the plate. Oregon State has a great team and right now they have to be the favorite to win the College World Series.

Likely last game of season tomorrow would mean everyone should be available for an inning, including Reggie and Frederickson and Max
That isn't the way Gopher Baseball does things. They protect arms. No chance at all Reggie or Patrick would've been used at all and once Max went over 50 pitches there was no way they would bring him back tomorrow either.

The tournament expanded to 64 teams and added the super regional format in I believe 99.

14 faced scrutiny a few years ago when they had a losing season I think it was his 2nd losing season in his career. With what 14 has done in his career you are consistently towards the top of the conference and battling for NCAA tournament bids there shouldn't even be any talk of facing scrutiny right now.

Long time follower of the board and big gopher fan. Really proud of how this team competed. Ran into a tough Oregon St. team and just didn't quite have enough to get the job done. The program looks like it will be fun to follow in the coming years.

bfast, what you're missing is that no B1G team has played in the college world series since OSU in 1966.
This is due to scheduling, so the key benchmark for Gophers baseball is essentially the B1G regular season.

Anderson has won the B1G regular season 7 times and the B1G tournament 9 times.
He was the B1G coach of the year several times over that span and is arguably the best baseball coach in the history of the conference.

Indiana was in the college world series in 2013, But I get what your saying. Warm weather teams have a huge advantage advantage in baseball and softball.

Maybe what hello-world meant to say was no Big Ten team has WON the college world series since Ohio State in 1966.

So next year is Max Meyer a starter or keep his closer role? Fredrickson, Meyer, Meyer would be a nice set of starters each weekend in any order. Hopefully we have some bats next year to go with the pitching.

Since 1984, Indiana is the only Big Ten school to make the CWS (2013). One team in 34 years. That should tell you just how difficult it is for a team in the north to compete nationally.

I think they will give him a chance to start and he will do a great job with it. If for some reason he ended up struggling as a starter you can always shift him back to closer. Should be a ton of pitching depth next year. Pretty much all of this years freshmen will be pitching in the norhwoods and that will be big for them after so many of our midweek games were cancelled and they missed out on innings.

It looked like Rose was going to be able to stop that rally in the top of 9. Two outs and if he elevates that last fastball another inch or two, he gets a swinging strike or pop up.
