Gophers open up as 1.5 point favorites in Rodent Bowl

This helps me. I will take a 1.5 point win.

And now OSU is a favorite. Gophers +1

What's more interesting is Neb moved from +5 to +10 after opening

I wouldn't touch this game as I think both of these teams are better than what we have seen so far, but not sure which one will show improvement first.

Yeah - I simply just don't know enough about our Gophers yet to feel strongly about either side of this bet. I think if we play like we did against Buffalo, we lose by 7-10 points but I expect us to play better so who knows?

"Defense wins games!" However public bettors love teams that score a lot of points.

Oregon State scored a lot of points, 62, against a couple of bead teams. The Gophers scored 17 against their bad team.

However the Gophers gave-up 7 points in their one game and the Beavers gave-up 90.

Bookmakers know that the public lights-up when they those points. It opened as a Pick-um.

Be interesting to see what things look like tomorrow and Friday.

Oregon State has 2 games of pretty bad performances. I'm not sure why we'd think they are any better than what they've shown. They were 4-8 last year and it seems like more of the same.

Maybe you are right and I am placing too much confidence in Gary Andersen's ability to turn them into a better program.

Like he did at Southern Utah and Wisconsin or just talking about his last year and a half at Utah State? ;)

Based on Utah State. I didn't realize that he had one bad season as head coach of Southern Utah.
Are you thinking Wisconsin was lucky to be rid of him?

His only season there.

We're not but yeah, the Badgers probably are.

If the Gophers play like they played against Buffalo, they WIN by 7-10. The defense was pretty much lights out except for one drive against a pretty dynamic QB.

I truly hope you are correct. I would slow down a bit on the praise for that Buffalo QB, though. He's big and fast, but he basically put up Leidner-like numbers last year while playing in the MAC. I would take the Beavers new QB over this kid.

We better adjust by having our secondary - corners specifically - step up. Luton has the potential to put up big numbers. I am hopeful our ground game can improve and continue to secure the ball. The OL will be key. My guess is the offense will show more diversity in Corvallis.

This is an easy call. Based on:

1. OSU Has not been good at defense during the GA era and may be worse this year.
2. Minnesota is pretty good at defense.
3. Having watched both teams play we have a talent advantage.
4. Defense and special teams wins games.
5. Offense will be better after first game sputters (this is more hope than fact).
6. We have a creative playcaller, at last.

We were playing soft. Luton has a live arm but is pretty much immobile. We won't need to worry about him taking off. I expect some blitzes this week. Still, our defense will need to step up and our offense will have to move the ball.

OSU fans seem totally frustrated with the team. Said they deserved to lose vs Portland State. Don't seem hopeful at this point, a sobriety-testing season so far.

If we play the exact same way as we did against Buffalo and OSU plays the exact same way they played vs CSU and FCS Portland State then I think it's safe to say we'd win. And it's not unreasonable to think that Demry or Rhoda will be slightly improved and be in a little bit better of a rhythm then they were to start the season.

Up to OSU -2.5 - basically saying that the teams are equal with the Beavs getting the home field bump.

Couple interesting numbers...

- Minnesota is 7-2 SU in its last 9 games
- Minnesota is 6-1-2 ATS in its last 9 games on the road

Well, Fleck broadcasting his lowered expectations campaign early and often to state and national media, BTN seem to have had the desired effect.

Gary Anderson is coaching to save his job right now, but I am not sure if it will make any difference.

If our defense can keep up the trend going back to the Holiday Bowl, and we keep our composure of offense, I see a win, maybe a big win.

If the OC trusts the QBs to throw the ball, or if the O line opens some holes for the RBs, combined with solid defensive effort, then it is a win. A whole bunch of big turnovers by the defense could change things as well. Maybe we will see some more aggressive Sawvil style pressure this week.

Oregon State has looked really awful this year, but when backed up the wall they moved it right down the field and scored a TD in a very short time to salvage the win. I still think Portland State could have won had they managed the clock better during the last drive.

He was only a freshman last year.

I more-or-less feel the same way. The defense was great and it's not like the offense was really terrible. They did gain over 400 yards. If Carpenter made those field goals, it would have been a healthier 16 point win.

Anderson shook the dice on a lot of JC players the last two years on defense. Looks like he came up ?

Nebraska went +5 to now +14 against Oregon.

If it's a vintage Oregon offense they are going to get shredded. OTOH Oregon was really, really bad on defense last year so if they haven't improved there it could be 40-50 pts for each side.

In a low-scoring game, I would give the advantage to the Gophers.

The unanswerable question is this: are the Gophers capable of winning a shoot-out with the current offense? Let's say for sake of argument that the young d-backs make a few mistakes, and the Gophers find themselves down by 10 points. Will the Coaches take the wraps off the offense and open things up? Is the offense capable of opening things up? Can Heironymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness?

stay tuned.

A lot of talk about how bad Oregon St. is.... we had to come from behind at home to beat them last year...
