Claeys did an interview with ESPN’s Outside The Lines this week, and in it he talked about wanting to speak up after Coyle came out “with a bunch of negative stuff” after he chose to fire Claeys.

The Gophers on Friday officially announced Claeys’ replacement, P.J. Fleck from Western Michigan.

Claeys told OTL that near the end of the football season he had been told that he’d be back as head coach next year. He also said that at that time, Coyle said he approved of the way Claeys had handled the suspensions surrounding the alleged sexual assault in September.

Claeys also spent a good chunk of his interview talking about how he wants to see fairness “for both sides” brought to the process. And he addresses how criminal matters are handled with different standards in law enforcement and in universities.

No doubt Claeys has a lot of anger over this and it will take time to clear his head. Its not as easy as "I need to move on." I wish him luck with his internal feelings and hope that he bounces back on his feet soon.
 

Claeys was willing to fight a battle, on the behalf of players, that is part of a war that is bigger than any of this. The administration had (and has) absolutely no intention of joining that battle.

I think he has true character for standing up for the people he cares about. Many, many people (including many former players, boosters, fans, and even at least a few on the BoR) thought the players were treated unfairly too. And being a "student athlete" in a revenue generating sport can be a bad deal for a lot of reasons. At times it must be hard for someone who cares that much to watch.

Claeys should get an agent to help him get a good coordinator job, or HC job at a Mountain West or CUSA school. He deserves to coach again soon.
 

Employment at no level is any longer an endowment, or even a promise. When there is a contract involved it is merely an obligation to meet the terms of the contract. Claeys wrote one tweet that he later said he partially regretted. This martyr business is getting ridiculous.

Here's the thing. There were more repercussions after the Northwestern game. Remember, they were still digging into the case.( EOAA ) We all agree that the whole debacle was not handled well by Kaler and Coyle. And whose to say Kaler didn't approach Coyle after new information with the second 5 , plus the Survivors Group and others getting in his wheelhouse, and say:
" Mark, we need to put this to bed. We need to fire Tracy". I saw both Coyle and Kaler in San Diego , and they looked like they were walking on egg shells. I think the timing of it is why they didn't fire TC before the bowl game and ask Sawvel to coach against Washington State. Everything blewup after the Wisconsin game .

If it took that long for the leaders to figure it out they are piss poor leaders. As they demonstrated.

I was at the Northwestern game and firing Claeys never crossed MY mind.

Claeys said pretty clearly that he understands they can pick the coach they want. From here it seems pretty obvious what's bothering him is that (a) he feels that the program is being unfairly depicted as having a toxic culture, and (b) it bothers him that there has been little or no acknowledgement of how hard they worked, and how much progress was made across the board, in the Kill/Claeys era. I cannot blame him on either point, even though he really would be much better off keeping quiet now.
 

It'll be interesting to see what happens to Claeys. Going on ESPN and criticizing your past AD isn't a good way to get a new AD to hire you; plus the whole boycott situation and his infamous tweet is going to follow him for quite a while.

Criticizing the past AD might hurt him a little, but I doubt it. Claeys has always been a "yes" man. He was cooperative with all of the inquiries in September, he wasn't dramatic this year about the extension. Jerry Kill and his staff know a lot of people in the community and can speak to their character.

Additionally, I know some people don't like it when this is brought up, but most people who step foot on college campuses understand that Title IX offices are a little different. You CAN'T question or condemn any of their actions publically, it's career suicide, but there had to be quite a few ADs and coaches that silently agreed with Claeys (and maybe even the boycott). I could be wrong on this point. But, regardless of where you stand on our particular case, I promise you, these offices throughout the country are an issue.

As far as the tweet, that will do nothing but help him as a recruiter. Claeys can honestly look a parent in the eye and tell them that he has their back. He'll have their back when it's unpopular. He'll have their back when it's difficult. That's huge in recruiting.

I'm not saying this whole thing didn't hurt Claeys, my guess is that he'll never be a HC again. However, he'll work again and someone will have a hell of a coach.
 

Replacing Claeys with P.J. Fleck is a solid exchange. Fleck should take the team to greater heights. He's starting with a 9 win team too.

How Kaler and Coyle went about doing it was pretty classless. Not as classless as what went on in that apartment or CoMn comments on here, but it was classless.

Seems pretty rational and reasonable to have all those thoughts.

Of course, Claeys had nothing to do with overseeing the people running the wrestling drug ring, basketball team scandals, Medical School scandal, hiring of Teague, shortfall in fundraising...

I'd be angry too if I got paid $500,000 not to work, after being given the biggest/dream job of my life by that same employer.

Claeys doesn't kick a kid off the team that has a threesome with a recruit...supports his team when they boycott playing in the bowl that the U signed a contract for...tweets publicly his support...not smart enough to perhaps be private about it...runs off the mouth after he is let go...and fails again and again to mention the victim. He should thank someone for $500k and the opportunity to coach at a p5 team. His mouth continues to dig the hole deeper and deeper. Can't someone call him up and tell him to shut up? He's not doing anything good for his future by airing his grievances publicly.

Since you have mentioned the "victim", you have already convicted the 10 individuals, who may have been involved in a consensual event. That's good to know. Now the best advice for you - STFU!
 

I don't have any respect for Coyle over the way he handled Claeys firing. The previous coaches, did do a lot of good for the program so trowing them under the bus, with the 'got to change the culture' crap is excessive. How hard would it of been to thank the staff for there efforts in improving the program, but he's made the decision that to get the program to where he envisions it, they need to go in another direction.

The funny thing is PJ fleck is from the poison culture tree of Jerry Kill, which is basically what Coyle said.

Big surprise Kill and Claeys are both pissed.
