STrib: University officials expect Coyle to publicly address Claeys' future soon.

Interesting that Ryan Burns thinks an extension has to be announced in next 48 hours or things will get interesting.

Could something be up with a coach still working this weekend?

If it's Fleck, it would make sense. The rumors have been that he and his reps aren't talking to any suitors until after Friday's MAC championship game.

I don't think that will be the case - I fully expect an announcement of an extension today or tomorrow - but it would fit the bill.

Is Florida rumored to be sniffing around?:cool02:

KSU?

Or are you talking about someone threatening to decommit?

How smug to imply we do things differently here.

Yes. We're so different.
Look how good we've done with it.

I'm sure programs around the country are lining up to learn our secrets. 50 years without a conference title and home crowds in the 30Ks... how do they do it??!

You don't have to read very far between the lines to know what's important to the regents: high graduation rates, good grades, no scandals, minimal bad behavior, not getting embarrassed on the field. The problem with that is, if you don't aspire to better than just not getting embarrassed, that's not going to get many butts in the seats. The goal has to be to excel in on-field success or we'll never fill the finest college football stadium in the nation.

None of that...just the complete lack of respect or show of faith that Tracy is your guy. The lack of leadership, the inability to make a decision. And if you are going to fire him, which seems about 1% likely...what are you waiting for? Coyle extends Tracy and Coyle extends his own job the same amount of time. Coyle fires Tracy and the clock immediately begins ticking on Coyle for his job performance. Overwhelmingly safer to just extend Tracy, be a good boy, follow the vocal outspoken arrogant regent. The only way you look stupid is not making a decision promptly.

Recruiting is hot over the next two weeks. Not good to have a staff with two years left out and about. Teams of interest playing this weekend.

Western Michigan
Temple
Navy (2 games left)

No doubt Coyle is as conflicted as some of us are. The easy thing is to extend but that could create more problems down the road. These are the days of our lives.

The delay could simply be negotiating the extension. Maybe he used representation this time? Lawyers don't work fast or cheap.

I do not see the $5 mil a year it may take to bring in the big "name" happening.
I also think it would be a mistake to look to a P5 newbie. I don't think a tear down is needed.

I'd be on board with a modest extension, with a pocket change buy-out.

I think the program is knocking on the door in some good ways.

If this drags out, Fleck might be the guy. I love to speculate, but if he is a "P5 newbie" might he come in and keep some of the staff that has been at a P5 program for 6 years? His DC is 63 and I can't imagine him coming with to be DC. Claeys and Sawvel would be great to keep around.

Fleck's strength is offense, so he recruits with flash on that side of the ball. Claeys and Sawvel run their defense with recruiting guys they can coach up.

Fleck could win in year 1 rather than completely blow it up.

Until something is announced, we can all dream.

----acceptable to me, but has a fired HC ever stuck on in ANY game day capacity? No.

Claeys is not staying around if he's fired. Again, stop it.

Almost none of the staff would stick around if a new coach comes in, especially the "top" guys like HC/DC/OC.

Fleck is a dream, if you have $3-$3.5M in the coffers you could have him (Fuente, the top G5 hire by a P5 team last year, makes $3.2), and I'm in the camp that if you have it you make the move for sure, but I have never seen that level of commitment from our athletics programs and don't think it'll start now.

Who is Fuente's DC? Bud Foster, the supposed coach in waiting/DC who didn't get the job. Maybe Claeys goes and Sawvel stays as DC under Fleck.

I think Fleck goes to Oregon or Houston, but he's also never coached College football outside the Midwest/Big Ten area. It will be disappointing if he goes to Purdue. That means he could have been had.

"You look around the country; Les Miles loses two games [at LSU] — he's gone," Dean Johnson said. "Charlie Strong loses to Kansas, he's packing his bags. I don't think we exactly do it that way in Minnesota. We take our time. We're thoughtful. We want to be strategic and look at the grand picture of our athletic department and our coaches, their values, but most importantly our student-athletes.

"When all is said and done, stability is a good thing. Stability in any program — and yes, with appropriate adjustments — but you start changing out personnel, you've got these players who have to get to know new coaches. So I err on the side of stability."

Yes, an awesome job has been done academically with the football team. But elevating the Gopher on field performance in football, over his time as a regent, above that of LSU and Texas and saying we do it more wisely is arrogant or condescending imo. The standings, the rankings, the national championships don't put us in that discussion in the last 30 years. For him to think we have been comparable is flawed imo

Just say at Minnesota we have different values than some other universities. Don't denigrate how someone else with more success on the field does it. That's what I didn't like. Not crazy about the stability comment either
if 6 and 8 wins is acceptable.

Also, not too sure as AD I'd appreciate him popping off about his opinion on my decision before I make it. Add it all up I got arrogance out of his comments, in part because he thinks he needs his voice to be heard when it's not his decision. He can communicate his feelings to the AD privately imo
