No hope! Just a very sad comment... Personally, I'm proud to be a citizen of the USA. I'm proud of the people who fought for our freedom before me. And I'll continue to respect our flag and national anthem. If for a moment it conjures thought we are one country striving to be great together, I'd welcome that. If for a moment it reminds me to offer thanks to God for all the blessings we have, I'd like that. And if the participants recognize they are about to enter into a competitive contest to be fought hard striving for victory with sportsmanship a high priority...that would be nice too.
Obviously, the playing of our national anthem means none of those things or anything to you?
All it really is is a contrived show of patriotism. MLB started doing it during war time as a marketing tool. It really has nothing to do with the game itself and if it wasn't already tradition it would be weird. I'm not really a fan of forced shows of patriotism in the first place. I'm glad to be American but America hasn't always been glad to have me and mine so my feelings towards flags and symbols aren't always cut and dried.
