Why SHOULDN'T Coyle fire Claeys right now?

Johnson's play calling is as boring as Limey.

This is the most dissapointing thing about this coaching staff. I am scratching my head trying to understand why Claeys fired Limey when all he did was hire a skinnier OC who calls the same plays.

No matter how the season plays out no reason to fire Claeys during the season.

State your reasons (if you have any).

Results on the field are lacking and we don't have an elite recruiting class to worry about losing. Claeys doesn't even have a huge contract to deter Coyle. I think now is the time.

We have to pay him either way, so what do you gain firing him now? Doesn't help recruiting, doesn't help get anyone else in here any earlier, so they probably won't. The day after we get crushed in Madison, watch out.

I think you and I are on the same page. I don't have faith in this coaching staff. I think it is time to move on. However, I do not believe that we should fire Claeys mid-season. Let the man finish the season out. We are going to pay him either way and there is no one on this staff that is going to step into Claeys' shoes and all of a sudden make this a winning team.

dope i knew my california brethren would know whats good

I think we have a better shot at locking up a coach early if we fire Claeys now. Once the job is clearly open, anyone that's interested can express their interest via the back channels. That's not going to happen with Claeys on the sidelines. I just don't see any benefit to letting Claeys continue to uninspire the team and fan base. Maybe an assistant can light a fire under this team.

What advantage do you gain by firing him today?? Now excuse me while I get out of here before Gopherhole turns into flames.

Correct. The decision should be announced the first week in December even if it is decided today.

You can do back channeling with a coach in place.

It may be a better idea to give Clays another year and hire a guy when the new facilities are ready to go

You don't fire him now but you absolutely start prepping for replacing him in the off-season. Firing him now gains you next to nothing and just adds more distractions.

For all intensive purposes Claeys was an interim head coach coming into the season given the circumstances he was hired under and the limited amount of buyout in his contract.

No real harm in letting the season play out and making the decision after it is over. Right now it doesn't look good for Claeys and company but things could turn around.

God no. A new coach can use the construction as proof the facilities are coming and coming soon. No need to let Claeys drive this program any further into the ground with his weak recruiting and embarrassing on field results.

Agreed, Claeys' contract makes him an interim regardless. Coyle can start scouting replacements and working back channels now.

Will the AD will fire a coach that is 6-6 and bowl bound? I hope so.

id chill on the recruiting thing the class this last year was our best in a minute and already has some guys coming to the surface im not bailing on him yet

Stupid thread, you gain nothing by firing him now. I say let the season play out then re-evaluate once it's over. They can still salvage this season and I think Claeys deserves that opportunity. The top coaching prospect also will be waiting to see what other openings there will be, and believe me there will be plenty of better ones out there.

Our interim coach will be able to recruit some really good players.

Well a competent AD will do that. We have no direct evidence Coyle is or isn't one. We do know his predecessors were asleep at the wheel when it came to making bold moves as was Kaler in getting an AD. So while we SHOULD be talking to every candidate possible now, I doubt our University's ability to think so far ahead.

claeys and jay deserve a chance to show what they can do with another QB imo if they cant develop one of the next generation then they are out. you can complain about the mental mistakes and they are obviously a issue that needs fixing but its clear mitch's sub par play is the most glaring problem

So you're saying bench Mitch now and play one of the freshmen?

The Brewster years were embarrassing, playing competitive games against quality opponents is not.

Claey's weak recruiting? He's recruited some pretty skilled athletes on defense.

Why is there such a dearth of similarly skilled athletes on offense?

Neither of which happened today.
It was a 7 point game, they had a chance to tie with seconds to go, that's a competitive game. And as much as I hate Iowa, I cannot claim they are not a quality program.

What are offensive gameplans and starting QB choices, Alex?

putting a bun and some condiments might make it a sandwich but its still s***

edit: tough to gameplan for a sub 40% completion percentage, you never know when it will be the 2/5 times he completes a ball

well I can disagree. We had one offensive drive all game. 3-0 seemed like a steep hill to overcome. Iowa just lost to winless Northwestern at home. Iowa played awful today too. Neither team is going to win a lot of games this year and 7 points might as well have been 60 for the way our offense played...

They lost to a 1-3 Northwestern team last week at home...gimme a break

You don't fire now. You keep team together, develop players and keep the team aspect. We all saw what happened when Brewster got fired, there was no accountability off the field.

The red flags are all there as to why this should be Claeys only season as coach.

Read the post I quoted, the person was talking about giving Claeys ANOTHER year, ie through 2017.
