Here you go - as always, I got what I could while typing live. These are not verbatim, nor edited:
• Looking forward to getting started, kids worked hard, had a great summer. Camp can get long, gotta keep everybody focused. These 18 practices will really set the tempo. Very pleased with the way the summer is going and the work they kids have put in.
• Oh Hugh - When I visited, the 1st thing out of his mouth, was that if you were going to do things the way they were done traditionally, I can't do you any good. I think you'll see him out there Friday, he'll watch us practice. He has some neat ideas. We've always tried to find best practices, the world is changing and in a hurry. An example - so many times, we do things at the end or practice, new stuff, preparing for the next game the last 30 minutes, when kids are tired. We're going to do the new things during the middle of practice. At the end, we'll do more full speed, compete against each other.
• Nobody is locked in at any positions. We don't need to make any decisions until we get through 18 practices. The guys who you're going to start will need 10 days.
• We have the talent in the WR group. Trying to make up for KJ. Rashad had some big catches and he's a true freshmen. There's a big change between those fresh and sophomores even mentally.
• The O Line - we definitely need to play better there, we don't have as much depth there. I have some concerns. We have some good freshmen, but it's tough in B1G play to play those guys.
• I've never worried about that (if it's his program). People can say this program looks like Jerry Kill's, and that's a hell of a compliment to me. He kept everything in a 3 ring binder, and thank god he did. All of those, I think there were 15 of them, all came in helpful over the break.
• Experience pays off in secondary and QB, those are the 2 positions that make plays to win ballgames. I'm really excited because Mitch is healthy, he hasn't been healthy in a long time. He's lost 20 pounds, still in the 230's. He's put a tremendous amount of effort in. We're pretty young at QB after that.
• They've been putting in work with a new sled, work on their own, the O-Line group. Without pads on, anyone can play for the most part. On day 3, we're going to put on the pads. Everyone that's worked with them this summer said there's no question they made progress.
• The corners part is, he'll get those young guys and work with them.
• Anyone that won't be available? No.
• D-End - I feel good about it, Gaeilin and Hank have worked awfully hard. We may not have as much depth, but the same time, if we have some injuries there, we have some bigger linebackers that can help us out. I'm ok with where we're at there.
• On Rodney Smith - I think you have to get the ball to the best players in that space, both he and Shannon can catch the ball. I'm not afraid of that, or opposed to that, I'd like to see them both on the field at the same time, they're both 2 dynamic players.
• I get confused, you're anywhere from last to 1st. Hell, good thing we play the season. It all comes down to the same things…I said I didn't see them present any pre-season trophy to us. I don't think the football program is broke. I think we can compete in the Big 10, we'll all be disappointed if we have a few weeks left and we're not in discussions to go to Indianapolis. Do the things we need to do during the week.
• I'd hate to take anything away from our own campus. I think it's great that both teams have their own stadium. I would be open, if we are hosting the NC game, and find a way to have 8 home games, to play a NC game in US bank stadium, that would be a neat scenario.
• Eric Amoako- he falls into the grad transfer rule, excited for him to give us some depth, he wasn't here in the spring. Donnell Greene - he's not here yet, he needs to finish up his school, which I believe he finishes today. It will be a week or 10 days for him.
Mitch Leidner:
• I think it's going to make a huge difference, playing on one foot for the majority of last season, and the previous one as well. I think it will help a lot. Toward the end of the season, I'd wear a walking boot all week long and take it off for practice.
• I hadn't been able to run since the summer, and with nutrition, lost 20 pounds.
• Freak deal, especially my foot, I got tackled, we were on a big play and my toes was basically floating around in my shoe. Snapped everything in there. Continuing my diet will be a huge part of recovery, staying on top of little injuries, and feel healthy throughout the year.
• I want to help the younger QB's in the room for years to come, and help the program become better and take the next step.
• I want to see who's' going to step up here, when things get hairy, where I can go with the football, Drew and Brandon are in that mix.
• Nobody on this teams pays attention to it (being underrated) - we've got a chip on our shoulders. We want everyone to count us out, and when Oregon state comes, they'll see how badly we want it.
• Our goals, win rivalry games, and win a B1G championship, I won't feel very good after 5 years not doing that. The other seniors have the same goal.
• If they did win? I'd probably just retire after that, move up to Northern MN and never talk to anyone for the rest of my life. It's a big goal, but an attainable goal.
• Mitch Leidner on Jonah Pirsig: "Look at the size of him over there, he's a monster. I've never seen him this big as he is now."
Jonah Pirsig:
• We've double doubled our lifting, changed the culture, we realize we need to be bigger than we are now. I wish I had 4 more years of eligibility to keep it going. I'm grateful for Coach Claeys changing what we're doing. I'm at the healthiest that I've felt since I've been here.
• I think I'll be starting at right tackle
• Garrison and Vince both impress me, they know they have to step up right away. Our biggest concern is depth, we need 5-10 guys that can play. We need a few more guys that can play. They were a godsend for us, they responded well to the call.
• Just about all of us were on a weight gaining program, good weight. We did some O-Line dinners, and put the feed bag on. Good off season for us. We've done some things that we haven't done in the past, getting together off the field with different position groups, we've bonded so much better than we have in the past.
