Gopher FB coach Tracy Claeys appeared on the Sports Huddle with Sid and Dave on Sunday.
Sid: Did players report in good shape?
TC: kids took a little time off, reported in pretty good shape.
Sid: New rules for coaches working with players?
TC: We can have 2 hrs a week. Given them 3 weeks for conditioning. 2 days a week we'll take an hour a day and work with kids. get a jump on fall camp.
Sid: Transfer from Oregon?
TC: he'll have one year. played in system similar to ours. get terminology down. big help on special teams. had concerns about depth at safety. give chance to let younger kids develop.
Mona: do you balance out recruiting classes by position?
TC: still recruit QB and RB - maybe could play another position if they had too. can't get caught short at QB or RB. we'll take one whether we need to or not.
Sid: good crop MN kids for 2017?
TC: not the worst year, but not like last year. 6 kids or so we think are our type of players.
Mona: RB's in spring game?
TC: Femi-Cole and Johanessen had good springs, continuing to work. didn't get a lot of reps last fall. made strides in the spring. special-teams aspect. added JUCO Mc Crary - big kid. we have tremendous competition for playing time.
Sid: Leidner at QB camp?
TC: excited about going back. allows him to go through drills with top QB's in country. very small margin between great ones and everybody else. improve techniques, lot better at throwing the ball. look forward to seeing improvement this fall.
Sid: Pirsig hurt last year?
TC: overhauled offensive conditioning for OL. completely different training than in the past. think it will pay off - guys stay healthy and get more physical. lifting 5 times a week, but not lifting as long. lot more resistance training. designed around drive blocking. take away some of running - more conditioning through blocking movements.
Sid: center position?
TC: Tyler played OK for a true freshman. needs to continue to develop. needs to identify LB's - determine blocking schemes, protections. with Coach Johnson's system, letting the QB take over more of the identification. Tyler had good off-season, gotten better. hard to play as true FR. he'll be a lot better.
Mona: Johnson's offense?
TC: last year threw 85% of time with 3WR in game. with johnson, will be a 50-50, 60-40 split with more running game out of 3 WR set.
Sid: players going to NFL? does that help recruiting?
TC: people dream of having opportunity. great goal to have as long as they get education. see how many DB's we've had in NFL. kids think we're training them for opportunity. on offense, trying to do some things to help kids out.
Sid: how is recruiting going?
TC: going good. just got through camps. have another camp in late July. finish up evaluations. going as well as can be expected. our goal: replace kids who are leaving with kids who are better - on course to do that.
Mona: change positions on recruits?
TC: with Eric Murray, he tested well and his HS coach brought him back for DB drills. that's the advantage of camps. With QB & TB, don't have as big a need, so look at position changes.
