All Things Nathan Reuvers Recruitment Thread - UPDATED: wisconsin commit

This is a very good player...

Good student, MN kid, no character problems, impressive offer sheet and a very good player, I do not buy the who cares if he goes to WI.

He kinda blew up the 2nd half of the season...from a "possible" to a definite big time talent. We did not step up our recruiting of him until it was too late. I believe he will be a good scorer in college.

Having said that.....we only have two schlarships, and need post and guard more

He will flip if Notre Dame offers, so mark this as a soft verbal for now.

LOL - I'm going to go first - He's not that good anyway! We didn't need him.

I wish that were actually true. He's the guy I wanted the most.

He addressed that in some of the articles and it sounds like he's sold on wisky, contrary to that "Notre Dame or bust" idea that was floating around.

I know this sort of thing is common in college football, but how often does it happen in college hoops? I think it's pretty rare, especially when the coach is not a sleazy, and I don't think that's the way Brey operates.

Very disappointing, the guy I wanted most in this class. could easily see him coming back to haunt the gophers much like missing on Jp macura did.

“I just don’t feel like I would be good in that culture.”

I read this differently, "I'm a horny little bastard and I need a strong disciplinarian for a coach."

This is disappointing, but he is a rail and the Gophers need a 2017 big that can replace Reggie in the middle. It will be several years before this guy, if ever, can play center in the B1G. I hope this means we are going hard for John or Sims as our big and are working hard on getting a guard commit.

Offering someone a scholarship who is committed elsewhere is now considered sleazy? I thought that was just recruiting?

Probably shoots too well for Pit. Jr to recruit him. We need more Konate like skill sets. Brick by brick!

Yeah most schools recruit three point shooting centers. Not sure what Pitino's deal is there.

Isn't the book on John that's he very raw? Reuvers may not be ready to contribute immediately, but I'd doubt John is either.

He is raw offensively but should be ready to contribute some in the defense and rebounding category right away. He looks like he could physically compete in the Big Ten, right now.

Here's what ESPN says about Theo John. Personally I like his inside game and he has a decent mid range jumper as well IMO. I do see where they're coming from with his motor, but if Pitino can land him and challenge him their the way did with Murphy, look out. I would say he's more polished than Reuvers, looking at the two I think John has the potential to have a bigger frame than Reuvers as well. The Reuvers loss becomes a big deal if we can't land John or sSims or someone comparable out of state.
Per ESPN

Strengths:
John is ideal looking 4-man with long arms, broad shoulders, and big hands. He is comfortable on the block and his post skills are pretty solid considering his youth. He sets up well on the block and shows good leverage (bends knees) and he keeps the ball high. He can drop in jump hooks with either hand and overall his touch is quite good. In addition, he has the explosiveness to catch lobs and finish well-above the rim. His soft touch extends out to the elbow and he appears to be comfortable dropping in mid-range baseline jump shots. Defensively, he is a solid weak side shot blocker and he shows very good timing. This timing allows him to be an efficient rebounder at both ends and this area will only improve with added weight.

Weaknesses:
Despite his potent post game and overall solid offensive game, his motor needs to improve. He plays in spurts and can be dominant at times, but far too often he disappears. With improved assertiveness in the paint area at both ends and a willingness to sprint the lane in transition, his stock will elevate considerably.

Bottom Line:
John is good looking power forward prospect for the high-major level. He has solid post skills and an excellent frame.

It will be several years before any of these kids make a meaningful impact on the next level. We aren't talking 5 star instant impact players here. Both Sims and John are just as much projects as Reuvers is. I'd even argue that they are bigger projects. John is extremely raw on the offensive and nowhere near ready to produce at that level offensively and Sims will need about 30-40 lbs. The only instant impact kid in the 2017 class is Trent. I would say Reuvers the second most skilled player in the MN 2017 class. And he won't play center at Wisky. Prototypical stretch 4 in that system and he has the skillset to flourish.

Theo John is ranked right around where Jordan Murphy was ranked last year. Just Sayin. Rankings aren't everything, yes I know, but I don't think John is quite the project that you think he will be. John has the advantage over Reuvers and Sims, in the fact he will be physically ready to compete from day 1.

In football, it is an accepted practice. In basketball, it is not. Very few coaches will continue to recruit kids and offer once they have publicly committed.

Fair enough. I still don't think it is sleazy.

I've watched him extensively this summer against other HM-caliber big men in EYBL and he has struggled offensively. Big difference between being physically ready and being ready skill-wise. Yes, he could provide a spark on the defensive end in spells but he still has a long way to go before he will consistently contribute.

Guys, if there is a talented class of high school players and we only have a few scholarship open, we will "miss" on some good players. And Pitino's favorites may not be your favorites.

Honestly from what I've seen and heard from him, he seems to act extremely cocky, rich, and entitled... Regardless of where they end up committing, I'm always going to root for guys like Theo, Jericho, and McKinley who keep quiet and handle their business. But no way I'm going to give well wishes to a spoiled and arrogant kid like Reuvers. Especially since he's a Badger. Game on.

Reuvers must have been a priority for the skunks -- they had to add another Minnesota big man to keep Illikainen company on the bench.

Per STrib:

“Some people have said I was taking a jab at the Gophers, others said it was fine,” Reuvers said Thursday. “[Incoming freshman] Michael Hurt is a good friend and I wish them well but they have their issues and that’s a reason I didn’t choose Minnesota.”

Lakeville North coach John Oxton also credited Johnson for his recruiting efforts but felt something might have been missing.

“Maybe it was a situation where Nathan wasn’t as high of a priority as other kids,” Oxton said. “I told Nathan, ‘You’ve got to go where you feel comfortable and wanted.’ I think coach Gard coming to see him twice spoke volumes. And Wisconsin is a stable, winning program.”

Four Minnesotans in the Class of 2017 have scholarship offers from the Gophers, including post players Theo John of Champlin Park and Jericho Sims of Cristo Rey Jesuit in Minneapolis. Reuvers said he has talked to his fellow college prospects but never in depth about what program they might attend or why.

Reuvers said of Minnesota: “I think they’ve got the right guys coming in but I don’t have time to see what’s going to happen.”

Go Gophers!!

Now we're starting to get to the good stuff!

Good grief the discussion is about sixteen year old kids most of whom are still growing in size, skills and mental maturation.
How anyone can be certain about how well they will be playing three or four years from now is beyond me.
Speculate if that is your hobby but call it speculation not facts.

Color me skeptical, but I really doubt that there was a lack of effort on Pitino's part in recruiting.

One of the reasons I don't like to follow recruiting is I start to dislike most of the attitudes and the kids that go with them. These kids all have been given a ridiculous amount of attention & adoration, told how wonderful they are. And they we wonder why they behave badly. Oh wait - now I remember! It's Pitino's fault. He forgot to tell them to be good.

Good grief, where did anyone say they were certain he would be good or bad in 3 or 4 years, or that anything was a fact? You keep criticizing things that aren't even being said.
