Gophers/Nebraska Post-Game Rant Thread

My only rant was in the first half, we had 3rd and 1 at midfield. Their corners were playing way off our receivers and we ran some goofy Mitch draw up the middle for a 2 yard loss. Given that we got nothing up the middle to that point and were throwing the ball well, that was just a horribly terrible call. I understand why we didn't abandon the run and I liked our sweeps and different running plays, but that one was indefensible and was a huge turning point in the game. The were giving us the first down and we didn't take it.

I remember that play vividly. They had no back in the backfield and whe Maye started in motion I thought "they'll fake the jet sweep and have Mitch keep it". Sure enough, that's what they did. Why was it stupid? Because the dine would not be responsible to protect the sweep and would stay true on the QB in the middle...which is exactly what they did. Awful play call.

My rants:

3. When I think about the price increases coming next year I get sick to my stomach. The non renewals are going to be massive.
Sigh

I've been thinking this exact same thing. The timing of the price increases and a season like this one couldn't have possibly been worse.

Nebraska played mistake free football The fullback fumbled, picked it up and ran for a first down unbelievable

3rd and less than 1 should always be a QB sneak and I don't understand why you would do anything different. Makes no sense to me.

1) Today was horrible. Team was manhandled up front on both sides. Coaches made some questionable calls. Their players were better. I'm sick over it...hate losing.

2) Most of this season has been horrible...and it's painful for fans.

3) Injuries ARE a big deal. They're not just a silly "excuse." Yes, every team has some injuries. Not this many injuries. Plus, we're not OSU or Alabama who just plug in 5 star recruits. We're still building depth. It's stupid to think a program like ours can compete without most of their top talent. Missing 5 starters on D and playing a new O-Line every week will hurt any team of our caliber. It's not a lame excuse. It's a reality. Painful one, but true.

4) The program is NOT going backwards. This is a blip on the radar. Show me a program that was rebuilding and NEVER had a down year. Under Kill, we've won 8 games two years in a row. Every recruiting class has been better than the one before, and 2016 is approaching top 25 in the country. Facilities plan is passed.

I'm gonna continue drinking a lot today, because I was pumped for the game and it turned into a sh!t show.

These are the most rational remarks I have read on gopherhole today. And, I am not going to say that Leidner was the reason we lost today, but he is the reason I drink every Saturday.

I thought the same thing. We were obviously in man and got torched.

I watched that replay many times and Johnson followed the play just enough to be blinded by the referee in front of him. By the time he saw who had the ball, it was too late. I wonder if this was one of those plays where we really missed Poolk, as he would have had the defense lined up in a better position.

I join you in confusion. The coaching staff completely muffed that play......

Is it possible they think maybe putting him in right now is not good for his development? He may just not be ready.

I here you but then again, why did they burn his redshirt? It doesn't make any sense. They put him in against Northwestern when they are getting spanked. Pera (sp) or Streveler couldn't come in and clean up for that game instead of wasting a year of Crofts eligibility? It is just a head scratcher. I know Strevler has been moved to wide receiver but at that time of the season he could have come in and ran it 8 times and handed off a couple more.

So has some experience for when he is needed. They also are excited about the incoming QB and it puts 2 years between the two.

Not much to say the morning after...Just discouraged. Tough to wait a whole year with so much hype and expectation. And then realize that you have to wait another year for a shot at that "special season".

I wish everyone on GH could read and internalize this. It is spot on and well said.
We have a lot of injuries. Yes, other teams do too, but what is critical is WHO is hurt and WHO you have behind them.

The Gophers have been a disappointment this year, but more than anything I have seen a lack of depth. We're still building. Right now our margin for error (or injuries in this case) is very small.

Hey middle aged adults, I don't know how you are getting in the student section. I hate it. You aren't with your kids, you're not recent graduates. You're TERRIBLE at cheering. You're trying to get others around you to sit down and drunkenly arguing with students. Students are forced to stand in the aisles because you aren't being accounted for when tickets are sold.

But seriously. You're terrible. You have to stop, if you know people who are doing it, tell them to stop. It makes the game worse for everyone around you.

Shut up and get off my damn lawn.

I should have worded my post better, I don't blame anyone for Football struggles

I'm sorry, but I find it hard to blame the RB's for the loss. When 8+ defenders meet them in the backfield, it's hard to expect much. I didn't see you posting last week how terrible our RB's are. I think it's more of an indication of how predictable the O is and how bad poorly our O-line has played rather than RB play. We have 2 Big Ten caliber backs IMO.

I don't blame our running backs or the O-line or the QB for that matter, but the injury's across the board have beaten some of the spirit and ability to compete at a conference level out of the team and definitely effected their ability to win and stay in the game. We have Big 10 level capable backs, just not the experience level or health in front that would allow those guys to beat people more often. Circumstances of yesterdays game, were Nebraska coaches identified our weaknesses on defense and were able to exploit them, they got a few bounces and they beat us with some elite speed at times. It happens, their coaches had the right calls at the right time yesterday. They Nebraska got ahead and put the ball in the endzone, and they made a lot of great plays and calls.

My comment wasn't an indictment of the running backs, I should not have made the statement that there not big 10 backs because it was a poor choice of phrasing to describe intent. I think they have good ability there just young players that have not played a lot.
Reusse calls Kill a whiner about the injury's, I don't see it that way, when I saw a bunch of unfamiliar numbers and names on the field yesterday I knew the defense was going to have trouble. Losing your one's and two's on any level of football means your plugging in inexperienced or players with less talent, that's not whining that is fact.
I'm not down on the Gopher coaches, I still really believe in their ability to coach and build the program. That and they are recruiting better athletes and higher number of them even if that is not apparent right now.
Nebraska had THE Gophers number yesterday, they wanted the game more and just out played our squad. That happens in football, I was impressed with the Gophers will to try and come back and not just accept defeat even when the score got a little out of control, the offense and Mitch I thought tried to will the team back in to the game. They have the want to and will to compete at the conference championship level, I think that but we lack some components that will get you to that level at this point in time. The program is still building, it just is, we don't have the depth to sustain the level of starters being knocked out of action and getting hurt. Gophers need some of the bad luck to end and a return to health is imperative.

still heard a lot of complaints about Leidner in the stands yesterday, I don't get it, he played damn hard and tried his best to rally the team. QB play yesterday in my opinion was not a problem.

That is pretty bad if it is happening.

Coaches have vacated the middle of the field in the passing game. I assume they do not trust their QB to make throws there. Where are the great vertical threats we heard about since the end of last season? What a depressing loss.

I've never sat in the student section, argued with students, or asked others around me to sit down, but I'm now tempted to try all of those things.

That is really lame. I did walk by some huge party by a large apartment building near Sanford Hall and wanted to be a student again. The student section has been great this year. Keep it up, and Dr Don, stay away from the student section!

Where were the Gopher fans yesterday? We arrived at 9 AM for tailgate in Maroon lot. The sea of red had already taken over the tailgating lots and filtered into the stadium. As a 10 year season ticket holder, the last 2 losses were some of the most difficult to deal with.

South Dakota, New Mexico State. I understand via recency that what ever is occurring rt now is either the best/worst but its been worse.
