AMIR COFFEY A GOPHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How far did he fall in the rankings post injury? He's still a top 30-50ish overall playe (high/very high 4 star), which is impressive on its own. Was he pushing 5 star status pre-injury?

ESPN - 8th SF, 33rd overall (28 - 5 stars)
247 comp - 8th SG, 45th overall (26 - 5 stars, 3 stars start at 121)
Rivals - 54th overall (27 5 stars, 3 stars start at 116)
Scout - 9th SF, 41st overall (28 5 stars 3 stars start at 127)

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Hold on now...

Coffey committed to Minnesota. Expect an immediate 30 to 50 spot drop in the rankings. ;) (Conversely, if you commit to Duke, you gain 10 to 20 spots.)

Great news on a Monday! Hope Curry is next.

It's probably safe to say that his ratings won't rise over the season because he's committed, so hypothetically he could decline based on others rising. Chances are he's ranked low based on being out last season.

And lastly. Who gives a flying f? I'm happy we got an extremely skilled 6'7" legacy recruit. Extremely happy. My fave player since dj for sure.

I'll be the first to say this is a really good commit.
HEJJ YA!!!! im going to celebrate w a non decaf:)

He will be the best shooter, all round player we've had in years - his game is smoooooth
He could be a Glen Robinson III (Michigan) type player!

Fine thread and I am enjoying the comments. Comparing to Glen Robinson III. Wow!! That brings back memories of some special basketball, and if the comparison is accurate, an awfully bright future for Minnesota!

Great quotes:

“I’m going to Minnesota,” he said in an exclusive interview late Sunday evening.

“The biggest reason was I was wanted to stay home and represent the city,” Coffey told Scout. “After the visit I just felt like the bond that I had with the coaches and players, it just felt like I was supposed to be there.”

When Pitino and his staff took over at Minnesota, Coffey, a 6-foot-6 versatile guard/wing prospect, was among his primary targets.

“When he first got the job within the first couple of weeks, he had me down to campus with my family and we had a good hour or hour and a half talk and they all stayed on me since with texting and calling,” Coffey said.

Go Gophers!!
. WANTED TO STAY HOME AND REPRESENT THE CITY!

Now be basketball's Carter Coughlin and finish this class with great talent. Adding this talent is a big deal.

Perhaps the greatest "get" since Slidell Tullis. Way to go Amir!! Go Royals! Go Gophers! Ski-u-mah!!!

What exactly about that tweet suggested that he'd be one & done?

And furthermore, who cares? If he's a one and done, that means he played well enough in his freshmen campaign to be noticed by the NBA. That means we'll have top caliber player. Every season he's here will be a treat and I'll wish him the best when he decides his time here is done.

Awesome! Raises the level of the whole program and he's not even here yet!

Sounds like it's going to be back to back solid classes for Pitino and Co

per ESPN:

"I never pushed Minnesota on him because I played there," Richard Coffey told ESPN's Reggie Rankin. "Minnesota assistant coach Ben Johnson did a great job recruiting Amir and he took a liking to Ben. He also bought into what Coach Pitino told him about them forming not only a strong relationship but a partnership. The players made him feel like part of the team. Amir knew them -- they played pickup ball together."

Loved watching his Dad play. I am suddenly much more excited about Gopher BB- great get for Pitino!

Legit Top 50 recruit with legit Top 50 offers
Top in-state recruit
Son of a Gopher
Son of a very successful Gopher
Son of one of the hardest working and biggest fan favorites in 30 years

All sorts of awesome.

Can't wait to see him play. Haven't been this excited about a recruit since Royce.

Such great news for a program, and really an entire athletic department, that badly needed it. It's really cool to see the top kid in state commit to the Gophers back to back years despite the program being on the outside looking in at the NCAA tournament. I was encouraged to see tweets by Al Nolen and Kris Humphries congratulating Amir's decision to stay home. Beyond just being an in state kid, it was important to land a kid with the type of talent that makes him a consensus top 50 kid.

I am most excited about Amir's potential to be a scorer especially in one on one situations when the offense has broken down or it's late on the shot clock. The Gophers haven't had a player who has excelled in those situations in a long time. For the team as a whole, it's going to be very interesting to see how much longer and more athletic the Gophers will be over the coming seasons than they have been the past couple of years. Some combination of Coffey, Hurt, Fitzgerald, Murphy, Lynch, and Konate is likely to start at the 3-5 spots. On paper, that's great depth that should allow for a lot of healthy competition for minutes and aggressive defensive play without foul trouble being a major concern.

Agree completely. Comparisons are worthless but I'm rolling with a combo of Vincent Grier and Anfernee Hardaway considering his size, athleticism, ball handling and scoring prowess. Plus...he's a legacy.

Gopher Warrior, what's your take on Amir? I remember you being extremely high on him early on but I don't recall hearing anything very recently.

Also, I know you're very high on McBrayer and relatively high on Murphy (although partially because he was a late recruit), but what's your take on Dorsey? I've gotten the idea you are very pessimistic when it comes to all small point guards who aren't great shooters.

Rochester Post Bulletin: Gophers' future just got a lot brighter

Looks like Richard Pitino can lure local recruits after all.

The Gophers basketball coach got skunked the first time around when four big-time Minnesota players all said no to him two years ago. That group would have comprised a dream team in Dinkytown.

But Pitino got Jarvis Johnson to say yes last year, then got 2016 recruit and Rochester John Marshall's own Michael Hurt to agree to wear Gophers colors. And Monday, the Gophers third-year coach got his biggest in-state commitment yet, with Hopkins' Amir Coffey sliding on a Gophers hat. Coffey is the son of ex-Minnesota star Richard Coffey, is 6-foot-7, and a four-star recruit.

Rivals - 54th overall (27 5 stars, 3 stars start at 116)

The last archived 247 page before his injury was from March 28th, 2014 (~7 months before his injury). At that point he was the 20th overall player and a 5*

Not to sound like a Debbie Downer, has anyone looked at the rest of B1G recruits for 2016? Almost every team has at least one 4* player. Does this mean that B1G has at least 10 teams in top 25?

I do love the class though but to have this much excitement is really crazy. Were we waiting for some good news. If yes, why so much bashing of Myron. He was right, we are enjoying the moment.
