Extra year for Bobek?

First-team center Brian Bobek is entering his senior season, but he applied for a medical hardship waiver for 2013, when he was out because of an infection of his heart.

Bobek also had to sit out the 2012 season after transferring from Ohio State. The Gophers anticipate getting good news soon, which would leave Bobek with two years of eligibility.

This would be a major positive IMO. If Christenson-Bobek-Campion end up starting this year we'd be looking at breaking in a completely new interior line next year. If Bobek has another year it would be huge to have some leadership and stability in the middle in 2016.

This is one of these situations where it should be a no brainer.

Dr. Don you know how the NCAA works!!! They take it out on the little guy cuz they're so mad at a big school.

There is no such thing as a no-brainer with the NCAA!!!

That's what I was implying...this a situation where it should take the NCCA receptionist 30 seconds to decide. But I'm sure a committee meting in Boca Raton is required.

Hey, Don it's going to hit 119 in Phoenix today. I will hardly break a sweat. Or sweat a lot. One or the other

In the past, it seems like Medical Waviers come out just before the start of the season, I would expect something in about two weeks.

This would be absolutely huge! It means we wouldn't have to break in a new Center in Mitch's Senior year. It means we'd return 3 starters in Bobek, Lauer & Pirsig, plus a guy with lot's of experience in Connor Mayes & likely a 5th year Sr in Isaac Hayes.

LT- r-Sr- Ben Lauer
LG- r-Sr- Isaac Hayes
C- r-Sr- Brian Bobek
RG- Jr- Connor Mayes
RT- r-Sr- Jonah Pirsig

I'd include JC OG Vincent Calhoun in that starting lineup, probably over Hayes.

I hope it happens but, man, it sure seems like Bobek has been here for a decade (and that's after transferring from OSU).

Joe C's article this week was the first I heard of this, but Sid just asked Jerry Kill about it on sports huddle, and Kill confirmed that he expects Bobek to get the sixth year.

This is a great bonus for next year's team IMO, *if* Bobek can stay healthy. Haven't heard anything on Vincent Calhoun's recruiting (with us or anyone) in more than a month, but if we're able to land him that sure makes the interior of the OL look a lot better next year.

How certain is it that he will commit to the Gophers?

He says Minnesota is his leader but will take more visits. We are his only p5 offer and I believe the only school he has taken an OV to so far.

I'd forgotten about Calhoun. I hope we get him. I'm not convinced he'd start over a 5th year Sr, but he'd certainly add nice depth & could indeed be an upgrade.
