Star Tribune's Rayno adds her own story to Teague scandal

The same reason many women don't - because they think that no one will believe them, it will hurt their career or a myriad of other reasons. This happens a LOT, and it's not okay to shun women. You questioning her is another reason why women don't come forward.

In a perfect world, fear would be dispelled and truth would be spoken. I can see the inner turmoil for Ms Rayno. Does she continue to be a punching bag, but remains on her career track...or does she speak up and risk being tossed out of sports journalism. It's not an easy decision and certainly difficult when you don't have the benefit of hind-sight or experience. No person should be put in such an uncomfortable position as Ms Rayno was placed into. The way this has played out, she will now be able to be a spokesperson for women in sports journalism. I see this as a positive in the entire situation.

That, however, does not mean I think she's a good writer. Her body of work has been underwhelming, in my opinion. This new revelation, however, makes me wish to give her one more year to show that she is capable of writing a coherent sports article on the Gophers. I'll clean the slate and see if she can stop writing fluff and instead produce an intelligent grasp of college sports. (Not that Ms Rayno really cares what I think.)

Rachel Blount (@BlountStrib) remembered her harassment by Norm Green in a series of tweets:

<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

but it makes you wonder why she waited until someone else stronger than her came out and said it.

Amelia herself said she regrets not coming out with it sooner, so I'm not sure what more you want her to do.

But as I reread his texts to me and the ones that were released Friday, I regret not doing more initially, especially now that I know Teague continued to harass women. At the time, I was still fairly green on my first real beat and, frankly, unprepared for something like this. I wasn’t bold enough in my reaction. Had all of this developed now, I might have handled it differently.

Since the awful Souhan article a couple years ago, I've boycotted strib clicks (like many others on GH) so I won't read Rayno's article. From reading the posts in this thread it appears a strib reporter has written a story with the sole purpose of piling on. Teague is gone. Whether or not Rayno -- or any number of other women coming forward -- had some awful experience serves no purpose, except in this case to capitalize on the sensationalism of an exposed scandal.

The purpose of her article was not to pile on as much as it was to strengthen other female reporters who may have experienced the same thing she did. It's an industry-wide problem that needs to be exposed and stopped.

Hopefully, one of the ESPN shows talk shows will breach this subject. They have a few veteran reporters that happen to be female that should comment on this using the bully pulpit.

Did anyone at the Star Tribune, excepting Human resources know about this? It appears her colleagues at the paper are shocked this happen to one of there own. No comments from the sports editor, publisher, or owner. I think she was in shock, and terrified. And having to continue reporting on the U would be unbearable. I appreciate the courage she showed in writing he story. I hope she is finding some support and healing now.

The comments in this article blow me away. I couldn't even get through them. They make the few posters on here that are irrational look tame.

If commenters didn't hide behind the anonymity of the internet I think we'd see entirely different statements

like it or not - we have only heard her side.

He was given his opportunity to share his side or issue a statement, he did not. So there's only one side to hear, and that's not her fault.

Perhaps you should actually read an article before commenting on it, especially one with that's this sensitive in nature? Then you'd realize your comments are completely off base.

I trust that Kaler would have handled this situation the right way (like he indeed did) whether it was Rayno or two university employees. But I think it would have been easier for university employees to expose this thing than it would have been for Rayno, a young up-and-coming Strib employee. I think it would have gone down in a similar fashion either way though, as long as the txt trail is there to clearly document the situation.

I think legally the way this went down is more or less legit. It's up to the Strib to protect Ms. Rayno from a hostile environment. They offered to do that in two ways: switch her assignment, or contact the University and demand the behavior stop. If the University had been notified, the ball would have been in their court as they too have a responsibility to create a non-hostile work environment, and I'm about 99% certain this extends to non-employees in a professional capacity there.

Ms. Rayno, in justifiable fear for her professional future, decided to 'wait-and-see', and thus no further action could really be taken.

Can we also point out that Ms Rayno had less concrete evidence. No witnesses of physical confrontation other than a possible Taxi Cab driver, some texts that could likely be thrown up to misrepresentation/twisted into different context. She didn't have much of a choice but to do exactly what she did (which is unfortunate knowing what we know now).

The primary purpose is to help paint a more complete picture of Teague. He may still have supporters that either 1) don't believe the original two women, or 2) believe them but think it was an isolated mistake. With her story, these two are a lot less likely.

It's not just about piling on...
And a more complete picture accomplishes what? Sensationalizing her story after the fact for the strib's commercial gain? seems like you and the other witch hunters are exploiting her. I'm not a fan of sexual harassment, and think it's even worse that your favorite news agency apparently made decisions that did nothing to halt the harassment it knew about, which might have prevented the situation with the two unfortunate women who made the charges that brought Teague down. Instead, after the fact saw an opportunity to exploit. Shame on you for supporting this.

So she's not allowed to share her story because she wasn't first? Come on.
I didn't say she shouldn't be allowed to share her story. I just think selling it doesn't serve a noble purpose.

the fact that you are criticizing her for "piling on" without reading the article on a topic like this, shows all one needs to know about your personal character...I'd hope that you now have absolutely no excuse for your ridiculous take on this situation.
Nothing I wrote criticized her. Unfortunately you chose to attack me for asking a legitimate question. If anything, it seems I'm more concerned about her than her employer and folks like you.

Oh, my god! You can't be this totally stupid.
Are you pounding your fists and yelling? I see no point in your post.

bigtenchamps1899 and Killme, thanks for outing yourselves as losers.
Are Bigtenchamps1899 and killme brothers?
Your posts aren't very thoughtful or enlightening. Grow up.

...No woman deserves this bs, but Rayno gets no journalistic plaudits from me for bravely telling her story after he is exposed. In fact the Star and Trib should be embarrassed they helped this go on.
Telling her story after the fact, as part of an investigation, if one was being done, would be admirable.

If she is suffering from the effects of Teague's harassment, the strib could assist her in getting help instead of asking her to write another story?

If you have to defend your views from so many people, maybe there's a problem with your own position.

It's no surprise that you defend your employer, but I clearly stated why I wouldn't click on the story. I read excerpts. So? You saying my comments are "off base," doesn't make it so. You certainly haven't stated the value of more dirty stories.

Wow. Same here. Whenever I start to think society is moving to a place of less racism and sexism, all you have to do is go to the comment section and you'll be reminded of the pathetic view points many people hold.

If a reporter like Amelia comes out with a story like this (whether yesterday or two years ago) it provides hope/direction for other reporters/professionals who may otherwise have felt nervous to come out due to backlash professionally that if Amelia tells her story then maybe my career won't be derailed either. It's pretty clear that there is "value" right there, and substantial value at that.

Go Gophers!!

Riiiiggght. No chance all of those attacking me are just caught up in the mob mentality. "Let's crucify Teague!!"

His actions led to his resignation and his career and future will likely be adversely affected since the two UofM employees came forward. Good for them. Bad for him. Seems like a good result. Those attacking me have yet to state the added benefit to our society from the strib publishing her story. I'm not Rayno's enemy. I don't support Teague. Perhaps you should stand FOR something, instead of joining the mob.

Dude, stop. Just stop.

Here's your answer BigTenChamp. Though you were maybe not trying to, you were making her out to be at fault when she was actually a victim.

Please make sure you are referring to the correct poster. I am Big Ten Championship and some loser just added on 1898 to my title and started these controversial posts.

To be clear, Rayno's article took a tremendous amount of courage to write and she should be praised for coming forward and writing such a heartfealt article.

I appreciate all you do for us here, Bleed. You at least make a case for an admirable perspective. But, I think you make assumptions that you cannot prove about the value. I don't see Rayno's story giving anyone hope, and the only "direction" is the opposite of what I would hope a reporter/professional would choose.

Was I wrong for asking the question? Are you completely incapable of seeing any value in checking the motives of an organization that has IMO made poor ethical choices in the past? They published Souhan's article. IMO they don't get the benefit of the doubt as championing some noble cause.

Nothing I have written condemns her, nor supports Teague or his actions.

Maybe if you read the story, you would realize Bleeds 'assumptions' are spot on.

The problem is, nothing has changed from 1992-3 when Rachel Blount was harassed by Norm Green. Access is everything to a beat writer, and to upset the apple cart with a harassment accusation, whether it happened or not, affects your job.

Guess what, in 2035, there will, unfortunately, still be stories about female reporters being harassed. Until team or school management takes these incidents with the media seriously, and does not affect, nor threaten, access for the accusing reporter, these incidents we keep happening.

Huh? Of course things have changed. Case in point, it's 2015 and Rachel feels like she can publicly talk about what happened in 1992. That in of itself is a massive change. And it does appear as if school management takes these issues seriously as the AD of the U is no longer in his job.

Of course we have a long way to go, and I'm sure in 2035 there will still be issues, but the days of a Norm Green openly harassing a reporter without repercussion are long gone. That doesn't mean the act itself will never happen again, but its clear we've come a long way since 1992-93.

Go Gophers!!

Women are damned if they do, damed if they don't.

If she takes it public early:
"Just wants attention"
"Whore"
"Why would she put herself in that situation"
"It must have been mutual"

If she waits:
"Lack of courage"
"Failed to protect other victims"
"Only looking out for herself"

Hey, a pretty sweet situation to be in.... /s

Bleed,

Rachel's stuff came out in 1994 (along with Kari Dziedzik's), after the Stars left for Dallas. Amelia's came out after NT resigned. Will there be a day when items can come out timely, not after the cows are out of the barn?
