Just like with other aspects of life/business, you'd find talented individuals that make them successful and effective as leaders.

Some have very good organizational/administrative skills that keep operations or projects running smoothly, but may not necessarily be someone who has a public persona.

You see others that are who are visionaries who have the knack to pick the right people to run things.

You also see others that are very charismatic type who seem to attract the right attention.

I'd venture to say that you need someone with a combination of all these qualities.

We need someone good at building relationships with donors & alumni, who is very approachable to the general public in addition to being very good at running things.

Most importantly, we don't want a repeat of meta-tongue gate.

Who would like to be the next AD?

The same priorities as Teague without the personal baggage or hucksterism.

Keep Kill happy, and get the facilities built.

Find a good basketball coach after Pitino leaves for a new job.

Based on what I've read about Goetz, it sounds like she was in charge of a lot of day-to-day activities and Teague was the front man/public face of the dep't and chief fundraiser.

That is probably a good model. Maturi was a very detail-oriented guy, but not so good as the public voice of the program. To some extent, I think the AD needs to be a little bit of a glad-hander when dealing with the boosters and donors. Let the AD be the "big picture" person, and have a #1 assistant who handles the details.

That is probably not a bad idea at all. Just pay her well to keep her long term & loyal (like JK always pushing to up the pay of his assistants before he gets one).

She is a behind the scene kind of leader who keeps the whole athletics program running.

She is a gem who can run multiple things effectively as her bio illustrates:

Passion for the U, belief that the U football can and should be a top 20 program consistently, and a realistic view that the revenue sports pay the bills, so like it or not, they get top billing. SKI U MAH!!!

The fortitude to not muck up the post-Don Lucia hire...

...and keep Jerry Kill and his staff here and happy.

Hire people in marketing and event organization who will actually encourage fun before and at football games.

So far in the Jerry Kill Era, we've seen a change in the culture of the football team (and for other Gopher Sports).

The next step is to change the atmosphere around the game. That is where a dynamic AD can effect change to make the game day experience fun for fans.

They need to create a temporary "mall", maybe block off a stretch Oak St. from University Avenue and 4th Street all the way to the end of Williams Arena. Turn it into a temporary mall during game days. Maybe, they ought to consider buying out the football shaped Bufalo Wild Wings property and turn it into a permanent area for fans. We need temporary areas for tailgating, street vendors, and for a live band.

We want fans to come early and take in the enjoyment of the moment leading up to the game. We are so conditioned to just get in and get out because there are no venues for fans, or incentives to come early and stick around.

I am sure something can be worked out by all interested parties. We just need the right AD to spearhead all these.

What is the atmosphere like at Camp Randall Stadium and at Kinnick Stadium on game days?

Someone who values the band from the get go. Teague was finally warming up to the band, but I heard the first few years it was a bit shakey as far as getting funding for even pepbands to travel. I don't know for sure. But someone who understands the value and tradition the band represents would be cool. I know this isn't nearly as important as other qualities, but that's what I'm hoping for.

I hope the next AD is someone anti-NT.

Hindsight is twenty-twenty. I always had a sense of discomfort about Norwood Teague. IMHO, he has no savoir faire.

There is something about his style that is bothersome. He left Coach Kill in the dark with the TCU schedule. Coach Kill's promised pay raise dragged for so long. Did he give Pitino a pay raise ahead of JK? Relationships didn't seem as smooth either with other coaches in the athletic program. Where the Track and Field coaches informed of what was going on with plans affecting them ahead of announcements? The blame for the Title IX Lawsuit should rest squarely on him. Being unilateral is not a mark of a good AD.

The list of foibles and faux pas can go on ad nauseum. IMHO, he would've eventually imploded with or without Meta-tongue Gate.

I hope the next AD has genuine delicate and considerate grace in dealing with his/her chargé, alumni, donors/benefactors, and the general public. Furthermore, we need a real M Man (or Woman)!

The people with the right qualities don't grow on trees. The trouble is the person/people doing the hiring may not agree with us about what's important.

I'm ok with hiring more of a schmoozer personality, even if they don't have a strong admin or business background. That's what the little people and delegation are for, running the enterprise. Strategic vision, fundraising, PR abilities, familiarity with Minnesota and our culture and history, and perhaps someone accomplished and already in the public eye would be beneficial. Also, preferably not an abrasive personality, imperious, or a child molester, serial sexter, adulterer, lion killer, giraffe killer, dog fighter.

We want someone like Jerry Kill or Tony Dungy. We aren't asking too much.

Tony Dungy will invigorate support for the University in general.

Not many AD's would demand a 3 to 4 million dollar salary. Tony would probably get 5 or 6 in the NFL. No chance he will will ever be the AD at Mn.

Go Gophers

Why? I wouldn't hire a 'real M man or woman' unless they have spent significant time in a different program that knows how to win. A U of M man might not know how to run a successful program because it hasn't been done on a consistent basis in my lifetime.

Her/His first priority is to make sure that there is a clearly defined means of assessing each athletic team and a clear protocol of communication between the department, the coaches and the athletes. We need an AD who is incredibly organized and visionary and who expects hard work from every person from the top down.

Pat Haden of USC has been the highest-paid AD for several years. His compensation was about 2.4M.

$1,248,592 in base compensation, up by about $45,000 from 2011.
$900,000 in bonus and incentive pay, up by $100,000 from 2011.
$242,824 in other reportable compensation, up by nearly $40,000 from 2011.

We don't need Dungy necessarily, as I've read his wife likes warmer climates. Will Kaler gather opinions (and take them into consideration as part of the process) from important boosters or will he go for Teague 2.0 and look for a more pure admin type?

The 1st thing the Prez should do is ask Kill who he would re commend , and go from there!!

As long as it isn't Jay or Silent Bob and they have some kind of connection to effective management skills, Minnesota, and can keep it in their pants, I think we will be okay.

Football guy; Minnesota state ties; energy, enthusiasm; intellect and vision; relative youth.

So you're saying boozers like me and Dr.Don are still in the running?:cool03:

Nothing wrong with a little booze. Some people just can't hold their liquor...like the ornery norge said, it's like a truth serum that can reveal suppressed character weaknesses (that we all have; some in more demented fashion than others), or maybe the id shows through.

If Teague's schmoozing capacity was equal to his sexting prowess...oh man. Maybe he texted some donors after dropping back a few.

Athletics at Minnesota is a big time business with annual revenue now over $100M. It could be a gamble to hire anyone without experience in a modern DI athletics department. In addition to criteria already posted here, the new AD absolutely has to be capable of working with B1G commissioner Delaney. A very good relationship with Delaney's office can positively affect game and television schedules. Maybe not to a large degree, but when choices are made at B1G headquarters, maybe we get a better bye week, a more balanced crossover schedule, or more help lobbying for a better bowl game.

Good points.

In the end, Norwood Teague's exit at this juncture may be a blessing in disguise.

We are presented with a dangerous opportunity and hopefully all the powers that be who have a hand in the hiring have a clear vision of where we want to go with Gopher Athletics.

This is a critical hire. Picking the right AD and keeping Beth Goetz long term are paramount.
