What should pregame look like around the stadium

It's apparently big news to some. Re-read marchdownuniversityave1981's post and then make your spiel to him.

No it's you. You keep pooh poohing anyone saying that if Ohio State and Nebraska can do these things why can't we, why not now. It's a legitimate question and speaks to how far behind the U of M is lagging in this area in comparison to other schools in our conference that they are trend setting on our campus at an away game what should have been figured out by the U for home games.

What? What are you talking about? I'm not pooh poohing anything. I'm telling people to get their facts straight. The U of M did not rent out McNamara Alumni Center to Nebraska. Period. It's not theirs to rent out. Period. Whether the U of M needs to do more to build gameday festivity is a different concept altogether, and I agree they do need to do more.

the U of M let Nebraska host a large pregame party on the plaza

Ok so you took issue with this one word in his entire post. I misunderstood, I apologize. You could take the view that the U by not renting it out for it's own fans did "let" someone else host there. The U is on pace to continue to "let" other schools do a better job here than it does in pregame.

It will be interesting to see what TCU does here.

I was sniping about Tailgating on the Cyclegate thread and didn't want to hijack their post so I started this one.

IMO as a fan, I would like to see them block off the section of Oak street that goes in front of the stadium pre and post game and use that area for fan congregation, food and beverage sales. There is room there to put up a stage and either have live music or at least have some music playing. It doesn't seem that difficult to do this and it seems strange to me that they don't.

This would be fantastic and seems like an absolute no-brainer. The current experience is so disjointed. Having a central, dedicated entertainment space would really bring energy to that area.

I doubt they do much, they aren't really a blue blood classic power, and Texas to Minnesota is pretty far.

Did you go to TCU last year and see how great that atmosphere was? The entire stadium is surrounded by tailgaters and a carnival like atmosphere.

The first way to improve our tailgaiting experience is to rid of the 11:00am kick-offs, which I acknowledge seems to be getting better. I agree the mall should be a prime area for tailgating, it is truly one of the nicest parts of campus and it need to be shown off. Every other big time program has as many as two times as many people tailgating than actually has tickets for the game. We need to sell out and creat a great demand for wanting to be on campus on Saturday afternoons. I dont have all the answers but we tailgate about as bad as any school out there. The folks in marketing ought to be able to figure this whole thing out.

Can't wait to kick some Horned Frog Ass

I was at TCU last year. Their atmosphere and tailgating lagged far behind ours. Not saying the U couldn't be better but I feel some people here think it's much worse than it really is. Our problem is that the best atmosphere is hidden behind the stadium away from where the casual fans enter. Putting up a big party on the alumni center lawn would go a long ways toward changing that.

Doesn't seem difficult? Cutting off access to 4th St isn't going to happen from a traffic flow and a public safety standpoint.

As a fan that seldom gets there, this would make the most sense. The Northrup Mall would be a great place for gathering in a nice setting, but it is not connected. If you had a 100,000 stadium, I could see various sections. But with the stadium we have it needs to be one big party, in one big spot. PEOPLE ATTRACT PEOPLE.

I don't think face-painting will do it.

What a load of hair splitting crap as usual from our resident pompous windbag. It does not really matter who the legal entity is(either the U of M itself or the UMAA) that "owns" the former site of Memorial Stadium, they are joined at the hip to the University, and when push comes to shove they will do exactly what the U of M desires, when the U of M wants it done, period.

I guarantee you, back in 2009/2010 when the U of M was doing everything but performing cavity searches for Vodka bottles, strong arming Frat Row, allowing the City of Minneapolis to step all over private property owners who might have catered to Gopher fans, the U of M was pulling all the strings.

If your hallowed "Gateway Corporation" or whatever is called had decided to have a good old fashioned giant beer tent outside the Alumni Center open to all students with wristbands needed to buy beer ( a common set up) open from 7 AM to Midnight every gameday with DJ entertainment and cheap beers, the U of M would have stepped in and squashed that in a hurry.

Likewise, if the U of M wanted something new and innovative done for on foot tailgaters in this space in 2015, those who "control" that space would do something to accommodate the wishes of their powerful senior partner. The Alumni Association is not going to win any long term battles with the U of M over use of that space at Oak/Washington and University, so they will generally try to get along.

DBAGdoll68 can stomp his feet and stubbornly make his 7th grade level points, and maybe his one or two supporters might stand up in their basement and cheer.

McNamara's Band should be playing on the plaza every gameday.:cool02:

Fine, the point was that the entity the is behind the Alumni Center, if that is in fact the UMAA, is not going to stray very far from the desires of the powers that be at the U of M. Could they get in a pissing match, yes. Would it be a sustained war, no.

I guess if someone not closely chained to the U of M owned the land that would be a different story, but I guess you missed what was implied.
