Coach Kill’s responses to questions on today’s Sports Huddle:
1) Sid’s first question was related to Bobby Bell’s graduation on Thursday from the University of Minnesota:
Coach Kill was impressed and proud that Bell completed his coursework and earned his degree: “It was awesome (seeing Bell receive his degree) . . . an amazing, incredible human being . . . a good human being . . . I got to know to him (many years ago) through a friend in Pittsburgh, Kansas.”
Kill no doubt will give Bobby Bell’s academic accomplishment as an example of the importance of perseverance and working hard in the classroom, when he talks to his players about studying hard and meeting one’s goals in their college coursework.
2) Sid and Kill talked about the upcoming wedding of one of Kill’s daughters next weekend:
There were some light-hearted comments by Sid, but he also gave kind compliments when he talked about the wedding and how lucky Kill’s future son-in-law is to have met and marry his daughter.
At the closure of the Jerry Kill segment, Sid wished Jerry and his wife, Rebecca, the best at next week’s wedding ceremony and reception, and there was laughter when he told Kill not to trip when he walks his daughter down the aisle.
3) Sid asked for the dates of the upcoming summer camps at the U that are conducted by Kill and his staff:
Kill gave a long list of camp dates, the types of camps and who they’re geared toward. The youngest age group is six to eight year-olds; and, of course, there’ll be several camps for high school age groups, including one-day camps, one for quarterbacks, “big man” and strength camp, skills camps for offensive and defensive linemen.
For more information, call (612) 206-5613.
4) Dave Mona asked if they know where Jeff Jones will line-up, since he appears to be versatile – running back, receiver, H-back, etc.:
“He’s a guy who can do a lot of things,” Kill replied. Although he didn’t give any specific information in responding to Mona’s remarks, Kill did say (Jones’), “natural position is running back.”
5) Sid asked for information on the “new coach” (Sid’s words) on Kill’s staff:
Kill quickly replied, “We got a volunteer . . . volunteer in quality control.”
The volunteer, Carson Walch, coached with the Chicago Bears last year. He became available, however, when Marc Treasman (sp ?) and his staff were let go after their last game. Walch will be an offensive consultant, at least for this year. He is being paid by the Bears to fulfill the contract he had with the NFL team.
6) Sid asked about tight-end Duke Anyanwu getting another year of eligibility after being injured:
“Duke Anyanwu, from Blaine, got his year back,” Kill confirmed.
7) Sid asked about TCU, now that they've looked at film of the Fort Worth, Texas team:
With laughter Kill replied, “They’re pretty good . . . great speed and athletes, but they’re coming to our house.”
While acknowledging the talent of TCU, which has its starting quarterback back, Coach Kill sounded excited and confident when talking about the opening game at night.
8) Dave Mona inquired about the team’s punters and kickers in the new facility when it’s completed:
Again, Kill sounded upbeat when he responded to Mona’s query: “We’ll be able to punt and kick in the new facility.” The confines of the current indoor practice facility has inhibited the punters and kickers when inclement weather has forced the team inside, “problem in the past . . . it’s hurt us a bit."
9) Sid asked about this year’s recruiting:
Coach Kill said he couldn’t be specific about potential recruits and commitments; however, “Things are going well.”
He said it’s important that they get potential recruits in the camps and on campus visits during the summer months, "find a way to get on campus during the summer,” when the weather is more conducive to recruiting.
10) Sid inquired about the Gophers second opponent, Colorado State:
Kill was very complimentary when talking about Colorado State, which has a first team All-American receiver and several players back from their 12 win season. Their quality quarterback was drafted in this year’s NFL Draft.
11) Dave Mona wanted to know the number of Gopher scholarships available in the 2016 recruiting class:
“It’s looking like 23-24,” Kill answered.
Kill sounded upbeat about recruiting and that it’s changed since when he first arrived at Minnesota, “We’re starting to get things balanced out.” He added that they don’t want to find themselves in situation where they have only thirteen tenders to offer.
12) Sid wanted to know about the team’s injured players and whether or not they’ll be available this fall:
Kill sounded happy when he listed a few players that should be available at the start of fall practices: “Scott Ekpe is moving around . . . Nick Rallis is back from major Knee surgery . . . Brandon Lingen is back to lifting, getting after it.”
13) Sid wanted to know if the 2015 recruiting class is on campus:
Kill expects most if not all of the recruits will be on campus June 14-16. Again, there is great disparity when it comes to high school graduations, “some don’t get out until June.” In some cases, a recruit will go through commencement exercises and two days later they’re on campus to start their college days.
As to getting recruits on campus for summer school and summer drills, “It certainly benefits the kids . . . get adjusted to college life.”
Kill said there are six or seven players that have graduated and will be taking post-graduate coursework for an advance degree while completing their eligibility.
Go Gophers!!
