So Rick came and wanted to give the pre-game speech.
It should be noted that the Gophers have not lost when Rick Pitino is behind our bench. We've only lost when we played Louisville.
Here are my post game notes, there will be official transcripts, but this is what I have:
Richard Pitino:
• We showed great will and determination to win that game. I thought that the bench guys, Nate, not that he's a bench guy, was tremendous, Joey was tremendous. The D was good, the rebounding not so much. Excited about a win like that. To do that with Andres scoring 0 points, and Mo not being his best, was impressive.
• On OSU - to be honest, it's not real fresh because I haven't watched it yet. What D'Angelo Russell was doing in the 1st half, that's what lottery picks do. I can't believe we held him to 0 points in the 2nd half and OT. We need to be rested and ready to go.
• I think he was a little bothered that he wasn't all freshman - I told him to take it out on everyone else. Normally freshmen hit a wall, he hasn't done that. He does it in big games. What he really did today, he huddled everyone up, talking, communicating. He's trying to start doing that now.
• Andre is scoreless in the past 66 minutes - That's not real good. I don't like that he's not getting to the foul line, he needs to get fouled more. He was a great teammate today.
• It was a little weird, he texted me. I gave him a little crap - you haven't been to one of my games this year. He said he wanted to speak to the team a little before the game. I said where were you against WI? He's got his own team to coach. We played a lot of the same days. I want him to be a part of our team as much as he can. Like Doug Collins and Chris Collins. He watches every single one of our games. I've been at a lot of his games the past 20 years, so he's got a lot to catch up on.
• On Joey - We don't have any other options really, with Joey. He reminds me of Louisville's Luke Hancock, he's got that similar type game. He's the hardest worker on the team every single day. He's not a great vocal leader. I've never wavered from starting him.
• The guards were not coming back and rebounding. DeAndre set the tone with 6 rebounds, bigs are blocking out and guards need to come back and rebound the ball.
Joey King:
• The way I've been playing recently is what I came here to do. My teammates and coaches are giving me all the confidence in the world.
• I was obviously shooting a little more today than pump faking. I was looking into Mo and trying to find guys on the perimeter.
• We really got after them in the full court. The 2nd half gave us a boost.
• It all comes down to the little things, being more prepared than the other team, and being as fresh as possible. Coach is really smart about all that.
• It's a great experience, it's always fun playing in a big time arena under the lights. It's a big time stage and it's a lot of fun.
• It felt really good to represent the home state while on the national stage.
• In the games, I obviously have to become a better vocal leader. In the games I just want to do the best I can.
• On Ohio State - There's no team we don't have confidence against.
Nate Mason:
• I 'm just doing everything I can do for the team. I feel like I did a pretty good job today.
• It's like a dream come true, at the United Center, we just came out and tried to get a big time win.
• On Ohio State - We look back on the film, we feel like we let one go. We need to do the little things and not let them get out to a hot start.
• Strategy against D'Angelo Russell - Just try to make his life miserable.
