Dec. 23, 2021: The Gophers have opened the transfer portal period on fire, adding Western Kentucky CB Beanie Bishop to a position group that was a major question mark heading into the offseason.

Cornerback was clearly a position group that the Gophers wanted to improve this offseason. After adding Abilene Christian transfer Ryan Stapp earlier this month, Western Kentucky transfer Beanie Bishop was Minnesota’s second addition from the transfer portal this offseason. Standing at 5-foot-10 Bishop was an All-Conference performer last season for the Hilltoppers in C-USA. He chose the Gophers over offers from Tulane, Miami (OH) and Old Dominion. He will now have two years of eligibility remaining.

Who is Beanie Bishop?:

Instant Reaction:

I believe that cornerback was the Gophers’ biggest question mark heading into the offseason. With Coney DurrJustus Harris, and Bishop McDonald all expected to be gone next season, Minnesota was set to rely on some young players in 2022. With Bishop now joining Abilene Christian transfer Ryan Stapp and freshman All-American Justin Walley as the team’s likely three starters, many of the previous questions have been answered.

Bishop will likely still have to compete with Terell SmithSteven Ortiz, Jalen Glaze, and Miles Flemming for the third CB spot, but you can never have too many cornerbacks. Whether you like it or not, the transfer portal is here and it is here to stay, and adding Bishop and Stapp to this Gophers’ roster is a great start for P.J. Fleck and the Gophers’ staff heading into this offseason.

What is next?:

The Gophers have now addressed their serious need for depth at the cornerback position, and I would imagine that they now like what they have at that position. The defensive line is another position that Fleck has said that he would like to target this offseason from the portal, so I could see a defensive tackle or even defensive end being the next player the Gophers go after. The offensive line can always be an option with four starters likely to be gone. Overall the offseason is just getting started and the CB room is now looking great heading into 2022.
