The Gophers’ annual “Summer Splash” camp took place over the weekend and Alex Elliot was one of many prospects to earn an offer. After publicly announcing his scholarship Monday morning, he announced that he would be staying home and committing to Minnesota only a few hours later. Elliot, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound linebacker chose the Gophers over top offers from Kansas, North Dakota State and Army. 247sports ranks the Hutchinson High School standout as the 11th best player in Minnesota.
Who is Alex Elliot?:
Alex Elliot is a student-athlete at Hutchinson High School in Minnesota. He just finished his junior year of school, where he led the Tigers to a 4A State Championship over fellow Gophers commit Reese Tripp and Kasson-Mantorville. Elliot finished his junior campaign with a team-high 87 tackles while adding 569 yards and 10 touchdowns on the offensive side of the ball. After a dominant season, he picked up six FBS and three FBS offers before settling on the Gophers and opting to stay home.
- Scouting Report:
At 6-foot-2, 200 pounds, Elliot currently has the build of a box safety rather than a Big Ten linebacker, but he is not yet even 18 years old. He plays with terrific instincts and athleticism at the linebacker position. He has shown the capability to cover pass-catchers quite effectively. His versatility and downhill tackling style makes his defensive potential very intriguing. With continued development, there is no reason why he cannot contribute on a Big Ten football field.
**High School Football Hudl Highlights:
With the Gophers’ annual summer camp taking place last weekend there was bound to be some news on the recruiting trail. Alex Elliot is now the fifth in-state player to stay home and commit to the Gophers. 247sports ranks him as the 11th best player in the state, but that should not diminish his defensive potential. He might not be one of the first people mentioned when talking about the 2023 class, but he knows how to play football. Coming up big in last year’s 4A State Championship game with 15 carries for 125 yards and 2 TDs along with five tackles on defense, Elliot is the type of player that I would want on my football team. It is always a positive to keep players in state that know the program, and Gophers fans should be excited for Alex Elliot.
What is next?:
We are right in the middle of the summer recruiting period, and with the Gophers camp taking place and big visits within the next few weeks, there should continue to be a lot of noise on the recruiting front. Alex Elliot’s commitment now gives Minnesota nine players verbally committed and five players from Minnesota. 247sports currently ranks them as the 19th overall class in the country.
