Here is the original press release put out by the U on the addition of Omot:
University of Minnesota head men’s basketball coach Niko Medved has announced the addition of BJ Omot (Mankato, Minn.) to the Gopher program. Omot joins the program after spending the 2024-25 season at California and his sophomore and freshman seasons at North Dakota.
“We’re thrilled to add BJ to our Gopher program,” Medved said. “BJ is athletic with size, length and skill. Along with his offensive talent as a wing, he is a great perimeter defender. I look forward to having him represent his home state and the Maroon and Gold.”
Omot, a 6-foot, 8-inch forward, was at California and played four games for the Bears before being sidelined for the season due to a wrist injury. Prior to his time at Cal, Omot spent two seasons at North Dakota, where he was the team’s top scorer both seasons and garnered All-Summit League First Team honors in the 2023-24 campaign. Omot averaged 16.7 points and 4.2 rebounds in that season, all while playing a team-best 35.2 minutes. He led the Fighting Hawks in points (535) and blocks (29) while shooting 41.6 percent from the field. As a freshman in 2022-23, Omot started in all 33 games for UND, where he posted a team-best 12.1 points per game. He also averaged four rebounds and 1.6 assists while scoring in double figures in 22 of 33 games. As a high school standout with Mankato East, Omot scored 1,118 points and 398 rebounds. He was a two-time all-state and all-conference selection in his junior and senior seasons.
