The Gophers recruiting train is not slowing down anytime soon. Greenville, South Carolina WR Tyler Brown committed to Minnesota Monday afternoon. Listed at 5-foot-11, 170-pounds he held top offers from James Madison, Jacksonville State and Harvard, the Gophers were his first FBS offer.

Who is Tyler Brown?:
Tyler Brown is a soon-to-be senior student-athlete at Greenville High School, which has an enrollment of ~1,500 students. Last season as a junior he recorded 1,255 all-purpose yards and 15 touchdowns, highlighted by 71 catches for 1,034 receiving yards. Also competing in track & field, Brown’s speed consistently shows up for Greenville, competing at one of the highest levels of football in South Carolina. After picking up a plethora of FCS offers throughout the winter and spring, he settled on the Gophers, exactly one month after being offered on May 20.
- Scouting Report:
The first thing that shows up on Brown’s highlight tape is his speed. He simply out-runs people. At 5-foot-11, 170-pounds he has the prototypical size of a power five receiver. He has the same physical profile as fellow 2023 commitment Nuke Hayes, but he was more productive as a junior. The only difference between the two is Hayes is a top-800 player and 247sports currently has Brown unranked. Both players are incredibly electric with the ball in their hands and great additions to Minnesota’s 2023 class.

Instant Reaction:
I am honestly shocked that the Gophers already have 18 total commitments for the 2023 class, which equals the total of last year’s 2022 class. But it doesn’t seem like they’re slowing down anytime soon. As for Tyler Brown, he is simply off the radar. Without a ranking from 247sports and only no other FBS offer under his name, his commitment won’t move the needle for most Gophers fans. I will admit that I am no recruiting expert, but I really don’t understand how Brown is not at least a top-1,000 player. Sometimes diamonds are lying in the rough, just waiting to be found. Tyler Brown has a chance to be that diamond.
What is next?:
Like I said before, with 6+ scholarship players entering the transfer portal in the spring, and only one being replaced, Minnesota is clearly aggressive this recruiting cycle and it’s trying to put together an abnormally big class. With 18 players already committed, I would imagine that they will at least get to 25 by the time it’s all said and done. Tyler Brown adds depth to PJ Fleck’s best recruiting class as head coach of Minnesota.
