The QB at Western Michigan under PJ Fleck made a giant leap in his second season.

Redshirt freshman (1-11) to redshirt sophomore (8-5)

Completions: 133 --> 250
Attempts: 251 --> 368
Completion percentage: 53.0 --> 67.9
Yards: 1,602 --> 3,443
Yards per attempt: 6.4 --> 9.4
Touchdowns: 8 --> 26
Interceptions: 8 --> 10
Passer rating: 110.7 --> 164.4

Could we see the same type of leap for one of our QBs this year???

I'm of the opinion that QBs are just sort of born.

Coaches can try to help and I think coaches and systems can hurt.... but the guys who excel just have something that we don't understand / don't or can't teach.

I'm hoping Tanner and/or Zack have it.

There's no such thing as a sure thing, but... you'd expect to see improvement in a player's second year. Especially considering both Annexstad and Morgan got extensive playing time last season.

It bodes well! It's interesting that both Gopher QBs put up better stats in their first season than Terrell.

IMO, Tanner is the more likely of the two to possess what you’re describing.

If Captain Morgan has that kind of improvement he's going to win the Heisman. Seriously. Him just doing what he did as a freshman starter for 3 more years is enough to be a good offense and consistently winning program.

Don't know about the Heisman, but you're right about 'The Leap'; if Morgan improves at the same rate as Terrell did, we will see some great football from him this season.

And as you pointed out, Morgan's first season was better in most categories than Terrell's, so he has a head start. Tanner will also have the benefit of a talented corps of running backs, a deep and hungry set of receivers and a big, strong offensive line.
 



If Morgan is the guy, which I think he will be to start the season, and he improves like Terrell did, or even just significantly but not as much as Terrell did (he has less room for improvement from a statistical standpoint) the Gophers could be very good next year.

Yards per attempt: 8.9

And this is probably a healthy underestimate without accounting for the 3 exhibition/preseason games where many players pad their stat lines.

Some perspective...

Morgan finished season with 147.6 passer rating. That would have ranked 30th in FBS if he had enough attempts to qualify.

His "6 start extrapolated to 13 games" passer rating of 149.9 would have ranked 24th in FBS.

If he improves on that extrapolation in 2019...
by 10% ---- 164.9 rating (8th in FBS)
by 20% ---- 181.4 rating (3rd in FBS)

So, goals for next year are a 70% completion percentage, 3500 yards, 35 touchdowns, and get the passer rating into the 190ish range. Nothing too lofty :ROFLMAO:

5000yds and 40tds sounds about right. And cut back on the INT's

I always like to read my old thoughts and see if I was correct or not even close. I’d say I was correct in them being very good but Morgan made a bigger jump than I expected
