Zach Pyron or Drake Lindsey, who will be the Gophers' QB1 in 2025?

It's that all-time favorite sports talk topic:

The QB controversy!!!!!

If only Fleck had a clue, he'd pick the right one!
I’m not sure an eye-roll emoji would do justice. I am going to let you in on a few secrets:
- Sports speculation isn’t unique to the QBs, The Gophers, or even football. Some fans, bear with me here, enjoy that aspect of the game.
- Sports fans know that their opinion doesn’t matter and the coaches will make the final decision. This is not inside info you possess.
- Sit down for this one: Coaches, even PJ, are wrong sometimes 😳. I’ve even seen crazy times where teams rotate QBs because even the coaches are unsure.

In this specific case we are talking about 2 QBs most people have never seen play meaningful snaps. No one at this point knows what to expect from the most important position on the team next year. Seems logical to me to discuss it during the 9-month offseason. If that bothers you then may I suggest not reading this thread. Happy Holidays Murray.

We should not ever have any discussion about sports stories because the coach will choose and the coach knows more than us.

Going forward, this message board should be box scores only!

So, who do you think will be the qb? I got Lindsey.

My guess is both will get work in the first game. Lindsey starts but Pyron plays as well.

It's why I like playing a weaker opponent the first game.

That would be my guess as well. I hope it is as it would give me hope for the next few years. If he is beaten out by a 2nd-stringer from a run-heavy team then I’d be less excited about the future.

Pyron was rated fairly high coming out of HS.

then again, a lot of QB's are rated high coming out of HS, and they do not have stellar careers in college.

I guess my knee-jerk reaction is this: If Pyron was really good, he'd be starting and putting up better numbers. Brosmer - admittedly at a lower level of competition - was a multi-year starter and won awards for his play. Pyron is a backup who has had a little success in limited opportunities. the two situations are worlds apart.

But - you never know. Maybe Pyron will blossom in MN's system or with different coaching. Maybe Lindsey is not ready yet.

If I had to bet my own money, I would say Lindsey starts game #1.

BTW - the Athletic has a interesting article on a guy named Max Browne. coming out of HS, he was one of the top-rated QB prospects in the country. wound up starting a few games at USC, and then got benched in place of.....Sam Darnold. transferred to Pitt, won the starting job and then had his career ended by a shoulder injury. today he's a FB analyst for games on the CW network.

Why does it matter that he coming from a run-heavy team? And is GT really that run heavy?

My guess would be Lindsey just because he’s been in the system and the staff has more invested in him, whether that should factor in or not is debatable, I think it does factor in most of the time. I do think Pyron might potentially be the best ready to play back up I’ve seen on the team in a while if he does lose out. It’s not like Haynes King is a scrub that beat him for the starting job, and GT switched coaches while Pyron was there. So who knows Pyron might be a better fit here in a more established system and culture. He gives off Tanner Morgan vibes, guy seems to have a lot of intangibles that make up for some of his physical limitations.

PJ will pretend that they are neck and neck through spring ball and then 95 percent Lindsey starts with QB2 there to pick up the pieces if he falters badly or gets hurt. Getting him to come here was a very nice move by PJ. He’s the perfect type of addition to the QB room that we needed.

Curious: what are Pyron’s physical limitations? Rated a four star coming out of HS. Size? 6’3”, 220.

Link below is to Pyron’s bio from the GT team site. In his true freshman season, he put up some good numbers—including running yardage. RS freshman season he again played in some good games. Looks like he can run and is a decent passer. Has some size. Great, dominant HS career—like Lindsay’s. I think PJ got someone who fits the Gopher model (not a prima donna); who will strengthen the QB room; who will add the intra-squad competition that PJ likes to have; and who has demonstrated, over the course of two seasons, that he can step in if the starter falters or is injured. I’m liking this transfer a lot.

Lot of focus being put on Pyron and Lindsey but don't sleep on Wittke as well.

Best case scenario, Drake lives up to the hype and seizes the starting gig but seems like it will be an open competition in the spring for sure and most likely the fall as well to find the best guy.

My gut instinct is that it will be Lindsay or Wittke since they didn't go out and bring in a guy who is a sure fire starter. If I was going to place a bet on it right now I would pick Drake to be the guy next year.

He’s more athletic and a little taller than Morgan. He’s not super limited but doesn’t jump off the charts anywhere as far as size athleticism or arm talent. His real plus trait appears to be his leadership qualities from what I’ve read about him.

Lindsey will start and Pyron will be our change of pace bulldog, like Seth Green or Cole Kramer.

We threw the ball 2 more times than they did. GT has changed their offense.

Interesting that Aaron Philo (who was committed here) passed Pyron on the depth chart. Philo looks like one that got away.....

MN was 32nd in FBS in pass play %.
GT was 84th.
Same pass attempts per game though, 31.5. But yeah, if he was a proven better passer he probably would go to one of the top passing teams. Lindsey committed to MN when we were super run heavy also. This isn’t a Ewers vs Manning situation, I’m not going to get super excited about either one until I see them excelling on the field. At this point I’d be happy if one can emerge as an average big10 qb for this coming season, and hopefully can grow from there. Anything beyond that would be a bonus for me.

Think it's Drakes job to lose but I will say watching Pyron against Notre Dame there are a few teams in the big ten who had worse. Bar for what seems to be acceptable QB play in the big ten is quite low. Think Pyron was better then anything Wisconsin, Iowa, Northwestern, Purdue, Michigan and maybe Rutgers threw out there last season.
