Your favorite loss in the Bank

Agree - I was there. That was a classic Viking heartbreak, but the weather made it fun.

Gopher related:
The TCU game when they were ranked #1 or #2
The Cal game in 2009
Penn State this year was fun also. Mainly because we didn't lose the game as much as Penn State won the game.
The game vs. Ohio State where Mo tore his achilles was also a fun game.

All of those games were fun and we played well. The opponent was simply better and eventually won the game.

Someone mentioned the Michigan game after Kill stepping down. I remember being upset because we lost that game. I don't remember the details but I remember being on the 1 yard line with like 30 seconds left and ran like 1 play. I am sure I have the details wrong.
I feel like we had OSU on the ropes and were on the way to the upset before Mo went down. That game is my pick for this category too

You picked some quality losses. Maybe the TCU game 23-17.
Definitely this one for me. My wife and I got season tickets as apart of a Citrus Bowl deal for students. Met 2 people next to us and had an awesome time despite the loss. Ended up going to many more games with them.

This thread has got me missing having season tickets since I was at most of these games.

I will add another “favorite” tally to the 2014 Ohio St. game. The tailgating, the snow and wind, the birth of dilly bar Dan lore, almost upsetting them - good memories. I had to look it up, but I distinctly remember Cobb having a great game, and he did with 145 yards and 3 tds. Turns of JT Barrett did as well with 189 yards rushing and 4 total tds. I also remember the media giving Urban a hard time after squeaking by Minnesota. He replied something to the effect of wanting to see Alabama play in a snow game in November and see how well they do. Very true, but I suppose the same could be said about a northern team playing in the humidity* of the southeast in August.

* (I’d argue that the real metric to use in this situation would be relative humidity, but I don’t want to start an internet squabble. That would be silly).

Put me down for USC 2010. The stadium still had that "new car smell". One of the legitimate big boy helmet schools was in our house. USC was one of those small handful of schools that we could sometimes watch on TV before the days of 200 channels and the internet.

I had zero expectations on winning, but we were right there until pretty late in the game.

Favorite loss is a goofy way to put it.....but the Cal and USC games come to mind. Marquee OOC games in the new stadium. Despite a rough stretch in Gophers history.....the team didn't look all that bad in those games either.....even though the Cal game was never really that competitive. Best was one of the best backs in college football at the time. Total homerun hitter. Never panned out with the Lions though.

The Cal game was tied midway through the Fourth quarter. I call that competitive. Best had a nice game against the Gophers that day but he was matched nearly play for play by Eric Decker. Decker had 8 catches for well over 100 yards, two td receptions, and threw for another score. The fact it was a competitive game is the main reason I consider this my favorite loss in the bank.

Wouldn't say they were on the ropes but we were certainly in the fight. Think we had the ball for 42 minutes that game. Ohio State with CJ Stroud, Wilson, Olive, Smith-Njiba, Henderson at running back. Marvin Harrison jr redshirting just made big play after big play on what might have been Rossi best overall defensive unit. Slight edge imo to the 2019 team but that 2021 defense was damn good and Ohio State made them look like a high school JV team

Heartbreaking loss but Halloween night vs Jim Harbaugh and Michigan.

Was a very fun atmosphere and we led the whole game. Had a blast up until the end when Tracy Claeys expected Jerry Kill to call a timeout even though he wasn't the head coach anymore.

A lot of mentions of the 2014 Ohio State game. I missed that game. I had to attend a wedding in San Diego that my wife was a bridesmaid in. She had wedding stuff all day... I was by myself... ended up watching the game at a beachside bar. The looks the bartender gave me when I told him that I should and wish I was at that game...

I'd say South Dakota. We had the long walk back over the river (Lot 90-something over there?) and going across that walking bridge, I took off my cap and flung it into the river.
The funniest memory I have of that day was after a USD touchdown in the west/open end zone. At the time, a group of fans toward the front of our section used to match outfits. I think that day, or at least weekend, was Sept 11, so they all wore USA colors. Scoring player thought they were USD fans, so he does a Lambeau leap and celebrates with them. Gets flagged. USD head coach out to the hashmark at the 30 to chew his rear end off for getting the penalty. One of the 5 worst losses (likely) in program history but a funny moment nonetheless

I was up at a cabin in Kabetogama watching it and couldn't believe how much South Dakota's offense was just shredding the defense. That South Dakota team finished 4-7 overall, compared to the 2007 and 2011 NDSU teams which ended at 10-1 and 14-1. They certainly weren't a great FCS team like others that have pulled FBS upsets. I think everyone knew it was over for Brewster after that one.

I remembered that we ended up losing by a couple touchdowns. Didn't remember that we were tied going into the 4th. Dang.

Northwestern 2010. Barely remember the game but know we lost, but lost my friends afterwards and ended up hooking up with the hottest girl in my modest history. She must have been slummin that day. The peak of my singledom.

Not to beat a dead horse but it was tied with less than 7:30 left in the game, 21-21.

Hosted 10 of my USD buddies for the weekend — thought to watch a beat down. They ended up much happier than expected. Coyotes were in the middle of a down streak that lasted awhile by far the worst loss I have ever seen for our rodents.

The loss to USD in 2010 was the moment I was done with Gopher football. I had season tickets and I was flying in to 4 or 5 games a year as I lived in Philadelphia and Chicago during those years.

I think many diehard fans were in the same boat as me as we lost all belief.. This was the starting point for getting rid of Brewster.

I didn't fly back for another game that year until.....they fired Brew and we had Iowa on the schedule. Flee back. We won. From that point on, we have been a team that has hope. Kill and now PJ have given us a chance.

The death of the Brewster regime was the start of us getting back to being competitive again. It all started on that Saturday when the Coyotes took us down. Embarrassing as hell loss but it led to us becoming relevant again.

For me probably a toss up between Penn State this year and 2015 Michigan game...Mitch had a great game.
