Your BT Rankings Week 5

I prefer the tier approach to the ranking 1-14.

Contenders - These top 4 have really separated from the rest of the pack so far
PSU
Iowa
Ohio State
Michigan

Teams that could still be factors in division races - but big gap between them and contenders
Michigan State
Nebraska
Minnesota
Wisconsin - just barely hanging on in this tier but schedule gets a lot easier going forward

Decent but on the outside looking in
Rutgers
Maryland
Purdue

Better luck next year
Indiana
Illinois
Northwestern

This would also by my exact list other than OSU. I would probably put OSU first until/if someone knocks them off. That team is uber talented with young players now getting seasoned.

"Face the Facts" got it right. But I am reminded of my old ball coach. The reason you play games is to determine who is the best team, so we all can look forward to Gophers/Nebraska, Gophers/Iowa, Gophers/Wisconsin and let the East determine their best after the various PSU/MSU/M/tOSU match-ups.

I'll go
1) Ohio State
2) Penn State
3) Iowa
4) Michigan
5) Michigan State
6) Minnesota
7) Wisconsin
8) Nebraska
9) Purdue
10) Indiana
11) Rutgers
12) Maryland
13) Illinois
14) Northwestern

1. Ohio St
2. Michigan
3. Penn St
4. Iowa
5. Michigan St
6. Minnesota
7. Nebraska
8. Wisconsin
9. Maryland
10. Rutgers
11. Purdue
12. Indiana
13. Illinois
14. Northwestern

No idea what to do with Wisconsin ... they look horrific on offense ... but so does most of the B1G West to some extent ... and everytime we talk about how it's over for Wisconsin, it's not. But man they look bad on offense ...
It is weird seeing Wisconsin not have a dominant running back and not be able to run the ball at a top of conference level. It is one of those things you just assume is going to be true every season because it has been that way for so long.

Been saying it for a while, when JT was in his final year it was one of the first times I can remember in quite some time, where the heir apparent was not obvious at Wisconsin. In the past there has always seemed to be a clear cut #1 guy but also a future star waiting behind him for his turn.

I saw that too but honestly I didn't think much of it.

We often don't have a super obvious known RB next and yet somehow we find one and they do well. I kinda assumed Wisc had to have a good collection of them but .... guess not / suddenly they're not able to make them successful ... very unexpected.

Newsflash... Oregon played tOSU earlier this season.
And the Ducks loss to Stanford further deflates tOSU.
Based on the first five weeks, which is the thread title... tOSU should be 4th.

As others have stated... this will play itself out. But it's good for the conference to have marquee teams like PSU/Iowa/Michigan getting national publicity.

Neither PSU nor Iowa have played anyone as good as Oregon. Losses like that can happen to a superior team with young talent early in the season. We'll see in a few weeks.

OSU’s offense is head and shoulders better than anyone in the conference and it will only get better as the young qb grows. Plus they have too much talent on defense to ever not be decent at worst. They’d be favored vs any team in the conference, even on the road.

No.

Great counterpoint. They’ve racked up 50 more yards per game and 13 more points per game than anyone else in the conference so far.
OMG.... No, again on your logic. They also wouldn't be favorites against Michigan, Iowa, or PSU at this point in time on a neutral field. Much less favs on the road.

Your stats mean crap because who of who tOSU has beaten. Iowa beat ISU and an undefeated Maryland on the road. PSU has beaten Wisky on the road and Auburn. Michigan has beaten Wisky on the road.

Wanna go for the "trifecta", cause I can do this all day long.

Piling up your stats against Akron and Rutgers doesn't indicate how good the Bucks are.

Please stop. RIGHT NOW(the thread topic) the Bucks are #4.

I know you'll argue back because you don't seem to be able to admit you might be wrong.

Ok, we’ll find out when/if they play. I might be wrong, but your takes aren’t any more valid. Everyone knows OSU has the most talented offense, not sure why that is a wild idea to you.

According to the SP+ (other thread here), OSU should be a 4.7 point favorite to PSU (the next best team according to that metric) on a neutral field. We'll really know in a few weeks. This whole argument is why I love college football!

Dammit...the discussion is about power rankings. We're not arguing who has the best offense. And if we were...I'd agree with you.

But there are at least three phases of winning football. PSU/Iowa/ Michigan are better than Ohio State right now.

If you’re ranking off record and resume, then OSU isn’t #1, but I still think they are the best team in the conference right now. Not sure what power ranking technically means, but I ranked based in orde of who I think is best right now.

It's going to be extremely difficult to not rank the winner of Iowa/PSU as #1, imo.

You just contradicted yourself here.

It really looks like those having the Bucks at the top are Fleck apologists.

Ohio State's best win is Minnesota?

Shirley, you jest.

Ohio state hasn’t lost 3 games in a season since 2011

sorry for being a fleck apologist by picking Ohio state to win games for the 10th consecutive year

Iowa - No one can stop their defense and win.
Penn St -
Michigan - This year Michigan beats OSU
Ohio St - Great team that faltered

Michigan St - In a group of their own

Nebraska - Rumors of their death have been greatly exaggerated
Minnesota - Offense isn't there to beat Nebraska
Purdue - Solid team
Wisconsin - When you are 1-3, maybe you aren't that great anymore. Welcome to the bottom half.

Maryland - Was good then Iowa
Rutgers - Was decent then OSU
Indiana - Was not decent
Illinois - Might beat WI
Northwestern - rebuilding year. Will win Big Ten West probably in 2023.
Not sure how you can say the offense isn’t there to beat Nebraska when Mn has a better offense than both Michigan state and Illinois at this point

you have Rutgers and Maryland underrated. 2-5 in the west are no better than those two.

This is an all time great comment. Thanks for the laugh.

I didn’t contradict myself at all. You really think ranking OSU number one has anything to do with the gophers? That’s hilarious. We play Iowa too, why would I care which of them is better?

Once again I will say: when reflecting on a season, no one cares, nor should they, which teams looked the best for the first five weeks of the season. Does anyone ever care which Olympic runners were ahead at 40% through a race of some distance? Therefore, it is a ridiculous argument to defend tenaciously because in the long run it is meaningless to virtually everyone. The first five weeks are merely the seasonal evidence so far to incorporate into one's estimation of how teams will finish..

You need to stop, take a deep breath, think about this, and stop being so irritated that others are unwilling to embrace a a rigidly narrow mind frame that is ultimately meaningless.

Not gonna happen. But if it does, be sure to bump this post and take the kudos you'll rightly deserve!

It's not impossible that Iowa could win the Big Ten. However, given the history in their biggest postseason games (Rose Bowls, the unofficial #2 bowl game of the 2002 season against USC), I could see them getting absolutely stomped if they did make the FBS playoff.

Then this thread is meaningless. We're specifically talking results after five weeks.

You want to project out to seasonal results. That's fine, but has zero to do with how teams did in the specified period.

And you really think some here aren't ranking tOSU high because they want the Gopher loss to look better? Ohio State will probably lose to both Michigan and PSU. And if they don't, I fully expect to hear about it in November.

You are really taking your anti Fleck approach way too far on this. No one is trying to make the gopher loss look better, that’s kind of a loony take my friend. Ohio State will probably lose to Michigan? Pretty bold considering Michigan has beaten them twice in the past two decades.

Yeah, I probably wouldn't have Ohio State in the top spot at the moment but it is totally understandable why many do and it has nothing to do with Fleck. Ohio State has been the best team in the conference for years and clearly has the most loaded roster even if it maybe isn't the most complete team at this time.

Boomtime just never misses an opportunity to take a shot at Fleck and anyone who might support him.
